Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Boog Powell hit a homer with two men on base in the first inning to start the Orioles off to a 6-1 victory over the White Sox. The Orioles added their other runs in the third with the aid of three errors. Singles by Carlos May and Gail Hopkins, around a passed ball, produced the White Sox tally in the sixth.

Angels 4, Yankees 3 at California (night game):
Jim Spencer and Roger Repoz rapped homers to enable the Angels to defeat the Yankees, 4-3. Spencer also had two singles, giving him nine hits in his last 11 at-bats. Spencer's homer with a man on base in the third inning broke a 1-1 tie. Repoz produced what proved to be the winning run with his round-tripper in the seventh. The Yankees fell short with a two-run homer by Ron Woods in the ninth.

Twins 7, Indians 6 at Cleveland (night game):
Coming from behind with three runs in the eighth inning, the Twins defeated the Indians, 7-6. Harmon Killebrew hit his fifth homer in as many games to help the Twins take a 4-2 lead, but the Indians went ahead, 6-4, in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Tony Horton and a homer by Roy Foster with two men on base. Bob Allison singled for the Twins in the eighth and George Mitterwald tied the count with a homer. Cesar Tovar then singled, stole second and scored the winning run on a two-out single by Tony Oliva.

Royals 9, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
The Royals exploded for six runs in the first inning and Bob Johnson went on from there to defeat the Tigers, 9-3, for his first major league victory. The Tigers' seven hits off the rookie righthander included homers by Dalton Jones and Bill Freehan. Bob Oliver batted in two runs with a single and Rich Severson two with a triple in the Royals' opening blast. Oliver also doubled in the third and scored on a single by Lou Piniella, who broke his own Royals' club record by hitting safely in his 14th straight game. Oliver got his third RBI with a single in the ninth.

A's 7, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (night game):
Chuck Dobson pitched a four-hitter and Sal Bando batted in four runs with a homer and single as the Athletics defeated the Red Sox, 7-1. Bando hit his homer after a single by Joe Rudi in the first inning. Rudi singled again in the fifth, Rick Monday doubled and Bando drove them home with single. Dave Duncan hit an inside-the-park homer for the A's in the sixth. Dobson's bid for a shutout was spoiled when Carl Yastrzemski hit for the circuit in the ninth.

Braves 8, Cardinals 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Although staked to a 7-4 lead after five innings, Bob Gibson failed to last the route for the fifth time in six starts this season as the Cardinals lost to the Braves 8-7. The Braves kayoed Gibson when Hank Aaron homered with two men on base in the sixth. However, Chuck Taylor, working in relief, was the loser when Hal King homered for the winning run in the seventh.

Cubs 10, Reds 7 at Chicago (day game):
With a 20-mile wind helping to boost balls out of the park, the Cubs defeated the Reds, 10-7, in a battle of nine homers. The Cubs broke a six-game losing streak, while the Reds were stopped on their string of eight victories. The Reds rapped five homers, accounting for all their runs. Hal McRae and Tony Perez each hit two for three RBIs apiece. Johnny Bench produced the other run with a solo swat. Billy Williams batted in four runs for the Cubs with two circuit clouts. J.C. Martin and Jim Hickman connected with bases empty. In addition to their runs on round-trippers, the Cubs counted twice on a walk and singles by Ken Holtzman and Don Kessinger in the fourth inning and piled up four runs in the fifth on a single by Ron Santo, double by Hickman, pass to Martin, single by Holtzman and double by Kessinger.

Astros 7, Pirates 5 at Houston (night game):
Taking advantage of an error, the Astros scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Pirates, 7-5. Bob Robertson batted in four runs for the Pirates with a pair of homers. Doug Rader had a round-tripper for the Astros. In the sixth, after Tommy Davis singled with one out, Freddie Patek fumbled a grounder by Rader. Johnny Edwards flied out, but Jim Ray helped himself to victory, beating out an infield hit as Davis scored. Joe Morgan then tripled to drive in Rader and Ray.

[DH] Padres 11, Expos 1 (night game) / Expos 7, Padres 6 at Montreal (night game):
A wild pitch in the 11th inning presented the Expos with a 7-6 victory in a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Padres, who won the first game, 11-1. The Padres piled up 16 hits in the lidlifter, including two doubles and two singles by Ivan Murrell. Van Kelly batted in four runs with a homer and single. Chris Cannizzaro added two runs with a round-tripper. In the nightcap, Nate Colbert, Bob Barton, Dave Campbell and Dave Roberts all homered for the Padres, Colbert connecting with two men on base in the fourth inning. Gary Sutherland and Rusty Staub hit homers for the Expos. With two out in the 11th, John Bateman walked and gave way on the paths to Jim Qualls, who raced to third on a single by Ron Brand and then scored on a wild pitch by Gary Ross.

Giants 7, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Willie Mays lighted the candles with two homers as Migel Puente celebrated his 22nd birthday by pitching the Giants past the Mets, 7-1, for his first major league victory. Mays, who had not hit two homers in a game since September 14, 1968, drove a pitch out of the park in the first inning and then connected again with a man on base in the sixth. Bobby Bonds also homered for the Giants, while a round-tripper by Ken Boswell in the eighth prevented Puente from posting a shutout.

Dodgers 8, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Dodgers exploded for four runs in the 12th inning to defeat the Phillies, 8-4. Willie Davis batted in three runs with a triple and sacrifice fly to pace the Dodgers to a 4-1 lead, but the Phillies picked up a run on a homer by Byron Browne in the eighth and tied the score when Deron Johnson and Don Money hit for the circuit in succession in the ninth. Maury Wills doubled with one out in 12th and was nailed trying to steal, apparently killing off the Dodgers' opportunity, but Davis and Wes Parker followed with back-to-back doubles to break the tie. After an intentional pass to Manny Mota, Bill Sudakis iced the verdict with a homer.
