Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 6, Red Sox 5 at California (night game):
With only two hits in the rally, the Angels scored four runs in the ninth inning and beat the Red Sox, 6-5. George Scott hit a two-run single and Tony Conigliaro homered with a man on base to lift the Red Sox to the top, 5-2, before the Angels staged their outburst. Jarvis Tatum drew a walk to open the ninth. Jim Fregosi was nicked by a pitch and Alex Johnson blooped a single to load the bases. A pass to Ken McMullen forced in one run and another counted on a sacrifice fly by Jim Spencer. When Johnson was caught off third base on a grounder by Bill Voss, McMullen moved to third and Voss advanced to second on the play. Billy Cowan then ripped a single, driving in the tying and winning runs.

White Sox 7, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
After being stifled on three hits, the White Sox got a break on a triple by Ken Berry to spark their scoring in a 7-2 victory over the Tigers. Jim Northrup slipped in a pool of water in center field and was unable to catch up with Berry's drive to open the eighth inning. Walt Williams followed with a double. After a safe bunt by Luis Aparicio, Tommy McCraw and Carlos May each hit run-scoring singles. When Willie Horton dropped a fly by Ayd O'Brien, the White Sox added their fourth run of the frame.

Yankees 9, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Building up a 9-0 lead, the Yankees were able to beat the Brewers, 9-5, in a game stopped by rain after two out in the last half of the ninth inning. Jerry Kenney, who had a triple and two singles, batted in two runs for the Yankees. Curt Blefary also accounted for two RBIs. Phil Roof and Max Alvis homered in the eighth when the Brewers started their comeback with four runs. Another scored in the ninth before rain halted play.

Orioles 5, Twins 4 at Minnesota (night game):
The accurate throwing of catcher Elrod Hendricks, who twice nailed Rod Carew on the bases, enabled the Orioles to emerge with a 5-4 victory over the Twins. After the Twins scored two runs in the seventh inning, Hendricks picked Carew off third base on an attempted double steal with Harmon Killebrew running from first. In the ninth, when the Twins had men on first and third, Killebrew struck out and Hendricks threw out Carew trying to steal second for the game-ending double play.

A's 5, Senators 3 at Oakland (night game):
Sal Bando started the Athletics' scoring with a two-run single in the first inning and wound it up with a two-run homer in the 11th to trim the Senators, 5-3. After the Nats pulled out to a 3-2 lead, the A's tied the score in the eighth on a double by Bert Campaneris and single by Reggie Jackson. Rick Monday singled in the 11th ahead of Bando's blow off George Brunet.

Cubs 4, Braves 3 at Chicago (day game):
Ernie Banks hit the 500th homer of his career and with it reached the 1,600 mark in runs batted in as the Cubs defeated the Braves in 11 innings, 4-3. Banks, who belted his homer in the second inning, also lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh for RBI no. 1,601. However, the Cubs faced a 3-2 deficit until Billy Williams tied the score with a homer in the ninth. In the 11th, Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert singled, Williams was handed an intentional pass and Ron Santo drove in the winning run with a scratch hit on a grounder that bounced away from Sonny Jackson at shortstop. Rico Carty had three singles for the Braves and extended his batting streak to 30 games.

Astros 8, Dodgers 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
The hitting of Denis Menke and Doug Rader provided the Astros' fuel in soaring past the Dodgers, 8-3. Menke homered with two men on base in the first inning. After the Dodgers came back to tie the score, Rader broke the deadlock with a circuit clout in the seventh. The Astros added four runs in the eighth, one counting on a single by Menke for his fourth RBI of the game.

Mets 8, Expos 4 at New York (day game):
Dave Marshall hit three doubles and Art Shamsky smashed a homer to lead the Mets to an 8-4 victory over the Expos. After Marshall rapped his second double in the fifth inning, Shamsky whacked his homer to break the 2-2 tie. The Mets added three runs in the sixth on a pass to Bud Harrelson with the bases loaded and a ground-rule double by Marshall, whose hit bounced over the fence in center field. Adolfp Phillips and John Bateman hit homers for the Expos, who also scored on a triple steal in the second, with Bob Bailey on the front end of the thievery.

Reds 5, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A homer by Johnny Bench with a man on base in the ninth inning carried the Reds to a 5-3 victory over the Pirates. Roberto Clemente homered for the Pirates. Lee May hit one for the Reds in the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, but Bench's blow proved decisive when the Pirates rallied for a run in their half of the ninth on a double by Willie Stargell and a pair of infield outs.

Padres 6, Giants 5 at San Diego (night game):
The relief pitching of Tom Dukes enabled the Padres to gain a 6-5 victory over the Giants. The Padres built up a 6-1 lead, scoring two of their runs on passes with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Dick Dietz tripled with the bases loaded for the Giants in the fifth, When Willie McCovey homered in the seventh, Dukes replaced Mike Corkins and held the Giants scoreless on one hit in the last 2 1/3 innings.

Cardinals 9, Phillies 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Joe Hague and Dick Allen batted in four runs apiece to pace the Cardinals to a 9-5 victory over the Phillies. Hague, pinch-hitting for Phil Gagliano, doubled with the bases loaded in the third inning and, remaining in the game, added his fourth RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Allen drove in his runs with a double in the first, homer in the fifth and groundout in the sixth. Don Money hit a three-run homer for the Phillies.
