Today's scores and summaries:

Twins 5, Royals 2 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins bunched four hits for three runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Royals, 5-2. Jim Holt and Leo Cardenas singled and Paul Ratliff doubled for the first run to break a 2-2 tie. Rod Carew then delivered a two-run single to clinch the outcome.

Dodgers 6, Giants 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers knocked out Juan Marichal with a six-hit barrage in the third inning and defeated the Giants. 6-3. This was only the fourth time in his 11-year career that Marichal had been chased by the Dodgers and the loss was only his 13th to the Dodgers, whom he had defeated 30 times. In the third, Maury Wills and Manny Mota singled and both scored on a long single by Willie Davis, who stole second. After Wes Parker beat out an infield hit, Willie Crawford grounded into a forceout, Davis scoring. Billy Grabarkewitz followed with a homer. Tom Haller then singled for the sixth hit of the inning off Marichal to send him to the showers. Sandy Vance was the Dodgers' winner, but the rookie got last-out help from Jim Brewer after the Giants scored twice in the ninth on a homer by Frank Johnson, a double by Tito Fuentes and a single by Hal Lanier.

Astros 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
Larry Dierker pitched his fourth straight complete game and beat the Padres, 3-1, with the aid of four double plays by the Astros. The Padres picked up their run in the third inning on a double by Tommy Dean and single by Dave Campbell. The Astros knotted the count in the fifth and broke the tie when Joe Pepitone hit a homer in the sixth.

Cardinals 11, Pirates 7 at St. Louis (day game):
Helped by four errors, the Cardinals defeated the Pirates, 11-7, in a game described by coach Bill Virdon of Bucs as the "worst I've ever seen -- on our part." The Cards, who scored five unearned runs, took a 7-5 lead in the sixth inning on a homer by Dick Allen, three-run double by Vic Davalillo and single by Jose Cardenal. Willie Stargell, who hit two homers for the Pirates, tied the count by hitting for the circuit with a man on on base in the seventh. The Cardinals broke away with four runs in the eighth. A pass to Jerry Johnson, a sacrifice, and a single by Lou Brock produced the tie-breaking tally. After two walks loaded the bases, Joe Hague drove in two runs with a single. Joe Torre also scored on the play that wound up with Hague being thrown out at third.
