Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 3, Red Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
Staked to a three-run lead in the first inning, Sam McDowell pitched the Indians to a 3-0 victory over the Red Sox. The shutout was the first of the season for the lefthander, who allowed only three hits. The Indians' runs counted on singles by Larry Brown and Ted Uhlaender, a double by Tony Horton and single by Chuck Hinton.

White Sox 9, Royals 3 at Chicago (night game):
The slugging of Ken Berry and Gail Hopkins supported the pitching of Joe Horlen, who gained his fourth straight victory when the White Sox defeated the Royals, 9-3. Berry smashed a pair of two-run homers and Hopkins drove in three runs with a homer, double and single.

Yankees 4, Tigers 1 at New York (night game):
The only Yankee pitcher with a complete game to his credit so far this season, Stan Bahnsen hurled the route for the second time and beat the Tigers, 4-1. Bahnsen gave up the Tigers' tally on singles by Dick McAuliffe and Norm Cash, around an infield out, in the first inning. The Yankees tied the score with an unearned run in their half and broke away with two runs in the sixth on singles by Bobby Murcer, Roy White and Danny Cater and a sacrifice fly by Thurman Munson.

Angels 5, A's 4 at Oakland (night game):
Homers by Jay Johnstone and Jim Fregosi, together with a pair of run-scoring singles by Jim Spencer, helped the Angels defeat the Athletics, 5-4. Spencer batted in the Angels' first run in the third inning and Alex Johnson homered in the fourth. Fregosi led off the seventh with his circuit clout. After singles by Roger Repoz, Johnson and Spencer added another run, Johnson was picked off base, but Spencer advanced to second on the play and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Joe Azcue. Dave Duncan batted in two runs for the A's with a bases-loaded single and Don Mincher hit a homer.

Orioles 4, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Saved from defeat in the ninth inning. the Orioles went on to beat the Senators, 4-3, in the 11th when Merv Rettenmund doubled and Curt Motton singled in roles as pinch-hitters. Frank Howard homered in the eighth to send the Senators ahead, 3-2, but the Orioles loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. The Senators failed to complete what could have been game-ending double play, and Dave May crossed the plate with the Orioles' tying run.

Braves 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Hank Aaron smashed a double and homer, increasing his career hit total to 2,997, and Rico Carty extended his batting streak to 31 games with a pair of singles as the Braves beat the Reds, 3-1. Jim Nash gave up the Reds' run in the fourth inning on a walk to Tony Perez and a double by Johnny Bench. Aaron's double and the first of Carty's singles tied the score in the sixth. Aaron then won the game by hitting his homer with Felix Millan on base in the eighth.

Expos 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dan McGinn, who came out of the Expos' bullpen and beat Tom Seaver of the Mets, 3-0, on May 11, turned in his second straight route-going performance and defeated the Pirates, 2-1. The Expos scored both their runs in the sixth inning on a single by Adolfo Phillips, pass to Bob Bailey and singles by John Bateman and Ron Fairly. McGinn's bid for a shutout was spoiled in the seventh when Willie Stargell tripled and Manny Sanguillen hit a sacrifice fly.

Padres 10, Astros 8 at San Diego (night game):
Nate Colbert homered after a double by Ed Spiezio in the 10th inning to give the Padres a 10-8 victory over the Astros, who were stopped on a five-game winning streak. With the aid of two homers by Ivan Murrell, the Padres held a 6-5 lead going into the ninth, but the Astros rallied for three runs on a bases-loaded single by Denis Menke and double by Jim Wynn. In the Padres' half, Murrell reached base on an error by Menke and when Ollie Brown grounded to Menke, both runners were safe on the shortstop's late throw to the second. After Steve Huntz sacrificed, Murrell crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Brown scored on a single by Chris Cannizzaro to send the game into overtime.

Cardinals 1, Cubs 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Managers Leo Durocher and Red Schoendienst both lifted their pitchers in the midst of a scoreless duel in moves that failed for one and paid off for the other when the Cardinals beat the Cubs, 1-0. Durocher removed Joe Decker when the Cubs had men on first and third with two out in the seventh inning, but pinch-hitter Paul Popovich grounded into a forceout. With Phil Regan ptiching in the Cardinals' half, Joe Hague singled and Mike Shannon, starting his first game this season after being sidelined by a kidney aliment, beat out a bunt. Phil Gagliano popped up trying to sacrifice and Vic Davalillo, batting for Mike Torrez, forced Shannon, but Jose Cardenal came through with a single to drive in the game's only run. Billy McCool, in relief of Torrez, completed the shutout and gained his first save in a Cardinal uniform.
