Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Royals 3, White Sox 2 (day game) / Royals 8, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
Jim Rooker, who was an outfielder-first baseman in the minor leagues before converting to pitcher, batted in five runs, including two in the 11th inning, as the Royals defeated the White Sox, 8-4, to complete the sweep of a doubleheader. Joe Keough collected four hits and was the hero of the Royals' 3-2 victory in the 10-inning opener. Keough drove in the Royals' first run in the lidlifter with a single in the fourth inning. After Ed Herrmann hit two homers for the White Sox, Keough singled in the ninth and scored the tying run on a sacrifice and a single by Ed Kirkpatrick. Amos Otis doubled with two out in the tenth, Bob Oliver was safe on an error and Keough doubled to drive in the winning run. Rooker batted in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the second inning of the nightcap and scored himself on a single by Pat Kelly. Two singles by Herrmann helped the White Sox rally to tie the game. In the 10th, Luis Alcaraz singled and took second on a grounder by Jackie Hernandez. After an intentional pass to Ellie Rodriguez, Rooker batted in both runners with a double and Kelly followed with a homer for two more runs to clinch the verdict.

Twins 6, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (day game):
Jim Perry pitched a six-hitter and also singled in the sixth inning to set off a five-run explosion as the Twins defeated the Brewers, 6-1. Singles by Steve Hovley, Phil Roof and Lew Krausse produced the Brewers' run in the second inning. Perry was forced by Cesar Tovar after his single in the sixth, but Rod Carew followed with a single and Tony Oliva brought in two runs with a double. A walk, two errors and a double by Leo Cardenas helped the Twins added three more tallies before the frame ended.

[DH] Angels 7, A's 1 (day game) / A's 6, Angels 5 at Oakland (day game):
Four walks in the 10th inning handed the Athletics a 6-5 victory and split of a doubleheader with the Angels, who won the first game, 7-1. Roger Repoz doubled with the bases loaded to drive in three of the Angels' four runs in the fourth inning of the lidlifter. Jay Johnstone homered in the sixth, Repoz batted in another run with a double and Jim Fregosi walked with the bases loaded to complete the Angels' scoring. In the nightcap, a three-run double by Alex Johnson and homer by Jim Spencer paced the Angels to a 5-2 lead. The Athletics, who had a homer in the first inning by Rick Monday, hit two more in the eighth to tie the score. Felipe Alou started the rally with a solo swat and, after a pass to Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando came through with the other homer.

[DH] Reds 5, Braves 1 (day game) / Reds 7, Braves 6 at Cincinnati (day game):
After being collared in four trips in the first game, Hank Aaron singled in the first inning of the second game for the 3,000th hit of his career, but the Braves lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Reds, 5-1 and 7-6, with the nightcap going 15 innings. The Reds took charge of the opener by scoring three times in the fifth inning. A double by Jimmy Stewart, single by Jim Merritt and sacrifice fly by Pete Rose tied the game at 1-1. Bobby Tolan, Tony Perez and Johnny Bench followed with singles for two more runs. Rose and Perez wrapped it up with homers in the seventh. Aaron drove in a run with his single in the nightcap and also homered with a man on base in the third inning. With the help of a circuit clout by Rose, the Reds came back to tie the count at 3-3. The Braves appeared to have won the game after scoring three runs in the 10th, but the Reds forged a new deadlock when Perez singled and Bench and Lee May hit successive homers. In the 15th, Dave Concepcion singled and Angel Bravo sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Rose, Don Gullett crossed up the Braves with a single to drive in the winning run.

Dodgers 8, Giants 0 at Los Angeles (day game):
Sending 11 men to bat, the Dodgers scored six runs in the fifth inning to clinch an 8-0 victory over the Giants behind the pitching of Claude Osteen. The Dodgers collected seven hits in their big inning, including two singles by Maury Wills, who also stole two bases. Ted Sizemore knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single. The victory was Osteen's first over the Giants since August 30, 1968, and the fifth of his career against 10 defeats in meetings with the 'Frisco crew.

Expos 8, Pirates 7 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Homers by Rusty Staub, Bobby Wine and Mack Jones enabled the Expos to outlast the Pirates, 8-7. Staub accounted for the initial run in the first inning. Wine broke the 5-5 tie with his round-tripper in the sixth. John Strohmayer followed with a single and Jones homered to decide the outcome.

Padres 5, Astros 3 at San Diego (day game):
