Red Sox 5, Tigers 4 at Boston (night game):
Jim Lonborg, who had been sidelined by arm trouble, made his first appearance since May 8, pitched two innings of scoreless relief and was the winner when the Red Sox defeated the Tigers, 5-4. The Red Sox scored the winning run in the ninth on a single by Tony Conigliaro after two walks and an error had loaded the bases. The loss was sixth in succession for the Tigers.
Angels 3, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Rudy May yielded only two hits in his first complete game of the season and pitched the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox. Roger Repoz homered in the first inning, Ken McMullen singled and Bill Voss tripled for another run in the sixth, and the final marker followed in the seventh on a single by Jim Fregosi and double by Repoz.
Twins 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Twins extended their winning streak to six games when Rod Carew scored on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to beat the Royals, 5-4. Carew opened the stanza with a single, took second on a safe bunt by Tony Oliva and reached third on a long fly by Rich Reese before coming home on Tom Burgmeier's wild pitch. Bob Oliver batted in all four of the Royals' runs with a single and homer.
Brewers 6, A's 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Playing despite a sore thumb, Tommy Harper hit a homer, two doubles and a single to lead the Brewers to a 6-3 victory over the Athletics. The Brewers scored five of their runs in the third inning. John Morris led off with a single and after a double by Harper and a walk loaded the bases, Mike Hegan singled for two runs. A walk reloaded the bases and another run counted on an infield out by Steve Hovley. Roberto Pena, obtained from the A's earlier in the day, and Gus Gil, recalled from Portland (Pacific Coast), followed with run-scoring singles.
Orioles 5, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Frank Robinson and Boog Powell each drove in two runs to back the pitching of Jim Palmer as the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 5-1. Robinson accounted for his RBIs with a double in third inning. Powell homered in the sixth and batted in another run with a single in the seventh.
Senators 3, Indians 1 at Washington (night game):
The Senators were held to only three hits, but they included a homer by Ed Stroud with two men on base to beat the Indians, 3-1. Stroud's smash off Barry Moore followed a double by Rick Reichardt and a walk to Wayne Comer in the fourth inning. Vada Pinson homered in the third for the Indians' run off Joe Coleman, who pitched a five-hitter.
Reds 3, Cubs 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
A triple by Bernie Carbo carried the Reds a to 3-1 victory over the Cubs. Johnny Bench opened the seventh inning with a safe bunt, Lee May walked and Carbo followed with his three-bagger to wipe out the Cubs' 1-0 lead. Tommy Helms singled to score Carbo.
Cardinals 12, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Santiago Guzman, making his first start since being recalled from Tulsa (American Association), pitched the Cardinals to a 12-3 victory over the Astros. The rookie righthander batted in the Cardinals' first run with a single in the fourth inning. Joe Hague doubled and Julian Javier walked ahead of Guzman's hit. Javier scored on a passed ball as Jose Cardenal walked. Dal Maxvill singled to plate Guzman. Dick Allen then hit loser Scipio Spinks' first pitch to him for a homer to climax the six-run outburst.
Mets 7, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Five homers, including two by Tommie Agee, powered the Mets to a 7-4 victory over the Expos. Agee led off with a circuit clout and Ron Swoboda added a two-run swat, but the Expos came back with three runs in their half, two scoring on a round-tripper by Adolfo Phillips. After taking the lead again with a run in the fourth, the Mets resumed with homers by Cleon Jones and Donn Clendenon in the seventh. Agee connected for the second time in the ninth before John Boccabella homered to account for the Expos' final run.
Phillies 2, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Phillies snapped a 10-game losing streak by defeating the Pirates, 2-0, behind the four-hit pitching of Chris Short. The Phillies scored only run they needed on a walk to Johnny Briggs and singles by Don Money and Deron Johnson in the first inning, but Larry Bowa added an insurance marker by stealing home in the second.
Dodgers 8, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
Wes Parker batted in two runs with a double and Bill Sudakis drove in three with a homer for the Dodgers' most telling blows in an 8-3 victory over the Padres. Don Sutton spaced eight hits, including homers by Ivan Murrell and Nate Colbert.
Braves 4, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Milt Pappas, who suffered a fractured finger in spring training and pitched a total of only five innings previously this season, hurled the Braves to a 4-2 victory over the Giants. The veteran righthander, in traveling the route, allowed only five hits. The Braves, who beat Juan Marichal, scored three of their runs in the fourth inning on a single by Rico Carty, doubles by Orlando Cepeda and Mike Lum and a single by Clete Boyer. Carty added the final run with a homer in the ninth.
