Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 3, Angels 2 at Chicago (day game):
Pinch-hitter Bob Christian homered with a man on base in the ninth inning and the White Sox added another run on a sacrifice fly by Gail Hopkins to beat the Angels, 3-2. Both clubs were blanked until the ninth when the Angels picked up their runs on a walk to Jarvis Tatum, singles by Jim Fregosi and Alex Johnson and a grounder by Ken McMullen, which Syd O'Brien muffed, allowing a second run to score. In the White Sox half, Bill Melton was safe on an error by Fregosi and Christian knotted the count with his homer. A hit batsman, a single by John Matias and a pass then loaded the bases, setting the scene for Hopkins' sacrifice fly.

Indians 7, Red Sox 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Sam McDowell yielded only four hits and also drove in the tie-breaking run with a single in the seventh inning while pitching the Indians to a 7-2 victory over the Red Sox. Duke Sims homered with a man on base to give the Indians a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but Reggie Smith knotted the count with a round-tripper in the fifth. After McDowell batted himself ahead, the Indians clinched the victory with four runs in the eighth, two scoring on a homer by Tony Horton.

Tigers 4, Orioles 0 at Detroit (night game):
Winning for the first time since April 22, Mickey Lolich snapped the Tigers' six-game streak by defeating the Orioles, 4-0. Tom Phoebus, opposing Lolich, fell behind in the sixth inning when Dick McAuliffe walked, Cesar Gutierrez sacrificed and Al Kaline singled. Kaline took second on the throw to the plate and scored the second run on a single by Willie Horton. Jim Northrup homered with a man on base in the eighth.

Twins 10, Royals 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The first player in Minnesota history to hit for the cycle, Rod Carew paced the Twins to a 10-5 victory over the Royals. In addition to Carew's homer in his four-hit package, the Twins also had round-trippers by Paul Ratliff, Leo Cardenas and Rich Reese, while Amos Otis and Joe Keough smacked homers for the Royals. Cardenas' drive with two men on base in the seventh inning sent the Twins ahead, 6-4, and they added their other runs in the eighth. Carew drove in one with a triple, Harmon Killebrew plated Carew with a single and Reese followed with his boundary belt to wrap up the Twins' seventh straight victory.

Brewers 8, A's 7 at Milwaukee (night game):
Steve Hovley singled in the ninth inning and raced home from first base on a double by Hank Allen to bring the Brewers an 8-7 victory over the Athletics. Don Mincher drove in three runs for the A's with a double and a homer. Tommy Harper hit a homer for the Brewers as the clubs fashioned a 5-5 tie. Russ Snyder sent the Brewers ahead with a two-run double in the seventh, but the A's pulled even in the eighth when Bert Campaneris singled, Rick Monday doubled and Felipe Alou singled.

Senators 2, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
Two unearned runs on errors by Gene Michael and Stan Bahnsen in the second inning enabled the Senators to defeat the Yankees, 2-0. Mike Epstein and Bernie Allen walked in the second, with Epstein scoring when Michael muffed a grounder by Aurelio Rodriguez. Ed Brinkman followed with a bouncer to Bahnsen, who threw wildly to second base, attempting to start a double play, allowing Allen to score. Dick Bosman and Darold Knowles combined on a four-hitter for the Senators. The shutout was the third absorbed by the Yankees this season, with Bahnsen on the losing end of all three whitewashes.

Cardinals 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
The relief work of Chuck Taylor, who pitched out of trouble in the ninth inning, enabled the Cardinals to gain a 3-2 victory over the Astros. Taylor relieved after Doug Rader drew a walk. An error by Julian Javier and a single by Norm Miller then produced a run for the Astros, but Taylor retired the next three batters. Jim Wynn hit three doubles for the Astros and batted in their first run, but grounded into a forceout to end the game. Dick Allen drove in the Cardinals' first run with a single in the fourth. Dal Maxvill walked in the sixth, Allen doubled and Joe Torre drove them home with a single for the deciding hit.

Expos 2, Mets 0 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos, the only club to beat Tom Seaver so far this season, did it for a second time when Carl Morton triumphed over the Mets' ace, 2-0, in a three-hit duel. Seaver struck out 10, but walked seven. Passes issued to Mack Jones and Rusty Staub in the fourth inning led to Expos' runs on singles by Ron Fairly and Jim Fairey. Dan McGinn was the other Expos' pitcher to beat Seaver, doing so, 3-0, May 11.

Pirates 3, Phillies 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Matty Alou singled with two out in the 14th inning and scored on two successive wild pitches by Dick Selma to bring the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Phillies. On the second wild pitch, Alou raced home from second base and slid under the throw from catcher Del Bates to Selma, who covered the plate.

Padres 10, Dodgers 4 at San Diego (night game):
After building up a 6-0 lead, the Padres had no trouble defeating the Dodgers, 10-4. Dave Roberts, who was the winning pitcher, doubled to drive in two of the Padres' four runs in the second inning. Nate Colbert homered with a man on base in the third. The Dodgers counted three times in the fourth, two runs scoring on a homer by Bill Sudakis, but the Padres continued their attack with a circuit clout by Al Ferrara in the fifth.

Braves 6, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Tearing a close game apart, the Braves scored five runs in the 11th inning, including three on a homer by Rico Carty, to defeat the Giants, 6-1. Triples by Sonny Jackson and Carty produced the Braves' initial run in the first inning and the Giants picked up the matching tally in the third on doubles by Ron Hunt and Willie McCovey. Gil Garrido, a late inning replacement for Jackson, who suffered a spike wound, opened the 11th with a single and was forced by Felix Millan. After Hank Aaron walked, Carty smashed his homer. Two other runs followed on a single by Orlando Cepeda, a hit batsman, a single by Clete Boyer and passes to Bob Tillman and Hoyt Wilhelm.
