Indians 10, Red Sox 7 at Cleveland (night game):
Ray Fosse hit a grand-slam for his first major league homer as the Indians exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Red Sox, 10-7. Fosse connected off Vicente Romo after three passes had loaded the bases. Ray Jarvis, replacing Romo, was greeted with a homer by Graig Nettles. A walk, double by Jack Heidemann, error and a double by Eddie Leon added three more runs. Fosse also had an RBI single in the first inning and Rich Rollins homered for the Indians in the fourth. The Red Sox staged a five-run rally in the sixth, two scoring on a homer by George Scott and two on a single by Dick Schofield.
[DH] Tigers 6, Orioles 4 (night game) / Orioles 3, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Don Wert homered with a man on base for the Tigers in the first game and Merv Rettenmund hit a similar blow for the Orioles in the second game to provide the winning margins in a split of a twi-night doubleheader, with the Tigers taking the opener, 6-4, and the Orioles winning the nightcap, 3-1. Wert's wallop capped a five-run outburst in the seventh inning as the Tigers shattered a 1-1 tie. Rettenmund and Paul Blair hit homers in a losing cause for the Orioles. Rettenmund was on the bench to start the nightcap, but entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and singled, leading to the Orioles' first run. Then, in the ninth, Rettenmund came up with a man on base and hit his winning homer.
Yankees 2, Senators 0 at New York (night game):
A two-run homer by Danny Cater and the tremendous relief pitching of Steve Hamilton enabled the Yankees to defeat the Senators. 2-0. Cater's homer, one of the Yankees' three hits, came off Dick Such after a pass to Roy White in the fifth inning. Mel Stottlemyre gave up a single to Ed Stroud in the ninth and walked Jim French and Frank Howard with one out before being lifted. Hamilton struck out Mike Epstein and Bernie Allen to save the game.
Reds 3, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Posting his second straight shutout, Jim McGlothlin pitched the Reds to a 3-0 victory over the Astros with a two-hit performance. Johnny Bench provided his batterymate with slugging support, smashing a homer, double and single.
Dodgers 6, Braves 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers, who were held to two hits by Phil Niekro in the first seven innings, exploded for six runs in the eighth and defeated the Braves, 6-3. Orlando Cepeda hit two homers to produce the Braves' runs. Manny Mota, Von Joshua and Maury Wills hit singles for the first run in the Dodgers' rally. After a sacrifice by Willie Davis, Clete Boyer muffed a grounder by Wes Parker, allowing the tying runs to score. Billy Grabarkewitz followed with a single and Willie Crawford then tripled to send the Dodgers ahead. Crawford scored the final run of the frame on a wild pitch by Hoyt Wilhelm.
Expos 7, Pirates 6 at Montreal (night game):
After hitting a double to help tie the score in the eighth inning, Coco Laboy singled with the bases loaded in the ninth to give the Expos a 7-6 victory over the Pirates. The Expos counted five of their early runs in the sixth inning, featuring a bases-loaded triple by Rusty Staub. Bill Mazeroski batted in three runs for the Pirates with a homer and a double. The Expos pulled even in the eighth when Laboy doubled and Ron Brand singled. In the ninth, Adolfo Phillips walked, Staub sacrificed, Ron Fairly singled and Don Hahn walked to load the bases for Laboy.
Phillies 4, Cardinals 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Dick Allen, returning to Philadelphia for the first time, smashed a homer to help rally the Cardinals, but the Phillies broke a tie in the ninth inning to gain a 4-3 victory and pin the defeat on Frank Linzy, who made his debut in a Redbird uniform. Steve Carlton, who started for the Cards, struck out 16 in eight innings, but the Phillies took a 3-0 lead against the lefthander in the sixth on a safe bunt by Tony Taylor, a triple by Larry Hisle and homer by Don Money. In the ninth, Allen hit his homer with a man on base and the Cardinals then tied the score with a walk and singles by Carl Taylor and Joe Hague. However, in the Phillies' half, Johnny Briggs got a scratch infield hit off Linzy and Byron Browne sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Mike Compton, Billy McCool came in and struck out Jim Hutto. The Cards next called on Sal Campisi, but the pitching change failed when Tony Taylor singled to drive in the winning run.
