Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 5, Indians 4 at Baltimore (night game):
A three-run rally in the seventh inning, featuring a bases-loaded single by Don Buford, brought the Orioles a 5-4 victory over the Indians. Jim Palmer homered in the third and Paul Blair batted in a run with a single in the sixth, but the Indians knocked out Palmer and went ahead with three runs in the seventh. In the Orioles' half, passes to Davey Johnson and Cuty Motton, around a single by Andy Etchebarren, loaded the bases. Buford's single delivered two runs. An infield out by Mark Belanger then added what proved to be the winning marker.
Senators 7, Red Sox 5 at Boston (night game):
Darold Knowles pitched four innings of scoreless relief and was rewarded with credit for his first victory of the season when the Senators defeated the Red Sox, 7-5. Del Unser homered for the Nats in the first inning and singled for his third hit of the game to spark the decisive three-run outburst in the seventh. Unser took third on a single by Ed Stroud, who then stole second. Mike Epstein batted them across the plate with a single and scored himself on a triple by Bernie Allen. Rico Petrocelli drove in three runs for the Red Sox with a homer and a double.
A's 4, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Homers by Frank Fernandez, Joe Rudi and Sal Bando helped the Athletics defeat the Angels, 4-3. Fernandez connected in the second inning and Bando batted in a run with a single in third, but the Angels were leading, 3-2, before Rudi and Bando hit consecutive homers in the sixth inning.
Yankees 4, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Yankees broke away with three runs after two men were out in the first inning and stayed ahead of the Tigers to win, 4-2. Bobby Murcer drew a walk and counted the first run on singles by Roy White and Danny Cater. White reached third on the hit by Cater, who took second on the throw to the plate. Curt Blefary then scored them both with a single.
Royals 4, White Sox 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Ed Kirkpatrick and Bob Oliver combined to bat the Royals to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox, who fell short in scoring on the one-man efforts of Tommy McCraw. Kirkpatrick drove in two runs with a pair of singles and Oliver accounted for two with a sacrifice fly and a homer. McCraw homered with a man on base in the third inning and scored the other White Sox run after bunting safely in the eighth.
Braves 8, Astros 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Gil Garrido and Orlando Cepeda smashed homers in the second inning when the Braves exploded for six runs to defeat the Astros, 8-1. Phil Niekro, who pitched a five-hitter for the Braves, opened the second with a single and Garrido followed with his first major league homer. Hits by Felix Millan, Hank Aaron and Rico Carty added another run before Cepeda connected for the circuit to add three more. The Astros averted a shutout when Joe Pepitone homered in the fourth.
Pirates 4, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Bob Moose pitched a four-hitter for the Pirates and got batting support from Gene Alley and Roberto Clemente to defeat the Cubs, 4-0, Alley doubled and scored on a single by Richie Hebner in the third inning. Clemente knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth and Alley plated the Pirates' final tally with his second double of the game in the ninth.
Phillies 3, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
With two out in the ninth inning, Deron Johnson hit a three-run homer to give the Phillies a 3-0 victory over the Expos in a duel between Woodie Fryman and Dan McGinn. Fryman helped his own cause by hitting a single. Tony Taylor went out, but Denny Doyle walked. McGinn then retired Larry Hisle before falling victim to Johnson's jolt.
Mets 3, Cardinals 0 at New York (night game):
Switched to the leadoff spot, Cleon Jones broke out of a slump with two hits, including a two-run single in the fourth inning, to lead the Mets to a 3-0 victory over the Cardinals behind the three-hit pitching of Gary Gentry. In the fourth, Joe Foy walked and took third on a single by Jerry Grote, who advanced to second on the throw. The Cardinals then passed Al Weis intentionally and Gentry struck out, but Jones came through with his payoff hit. The Mets' other run scored on a balk by Steve Carlton when Tommie Agee tried to steal home in the seventh.
Reds 6, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
Tony Perez hit his 17th homer of the season with Pete Rose on base for his 47th and 48th RBIs to carry the Reds to a 6-4 victory over the Padres. Rose was on base with a single when Perez shattered the 4-4 tie in the eighth inning.
Giants 11, Dodgers 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Coming back after absorbing a 19-3 defeat in the previous night's game, the Giants walloped the Dodgers, 11-3, with a 13-hit attack that included homers by Willie Mays, Bob Taylor and Frank Johnson. Juan Marichal, after pitching shutout ball over the first seven innings, weakened in the last two frames, but had a big enough lead to last the distance. Taylor's homer was the first of his major league career, while Mays' blow was his 612th. Johnson's blast came with two men on base. Tito Fuentes drove in three runs for the Giants with a double and a sacrifice fly.
