Tony LaRussa knocked in two runs with a double in the seventh inning to enable Chuck Dobson to pitch the Athletics to a 2-0 victory over the Angels. Felipe Alou beat out an infield hit and Tito Francona sacrificed before the Angels made the mistake of passing Frank Fernandez intentionally in order to let Rudy May pitch to LaRussa.

Twins 11, Brewers 2 at Minnesota (day game):
Before leaving the game with tightness in his throwing arm, Luis Tiant stowed away his sixth straight victory as the Twins pounded the Brewers, 11-2. Stan Williams pitched the last 1 2/3 innings. Tiant collected three of the Twins' 16 hits and drove in three runs. Cesar Tovar homered with two men on base as every starter in Twins' lineup got at least one hit. Russ Snyder and Tommy Harper homered to produce the Brewers' runs.

Cubs 8, Pirates 7 at Chicago (day game):
Jim Hickman hit his second two-run homer of the game in ninth inning to bring the Cubs an 8-7 victory over the Pirates. Hickman's first smash in the seventh tied the score at 6-6, but the Pirates went ahead with an unearned run in the eighth. Cardinals 9, Mets 2 at New York (day game):

Hague greeted the switch with a two-run single. Hague homered in the eighth and wound up his day's production with a two-run single in the ninth.
