Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, White Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Shut out on two hits over the first seven innings, the Red Sox picked up a run in the eighth and rallied for three more in the ninth to beat the White Sox, 4-3. Bill Melton hit a double and a homer to pace the White Sox. The first Red Sox run counted on a single by Carl Yastrzemski, a wild pitch by Tommy John and a sacrifice fly by Rico Petrocelli. Luis Alvarado walked to open the ninth. Wilbur Wood, replacing John, yielded a pinch-single by Jose Santiago and passed Mike Andrews to load the bases. Billy Conigliaro singled, driving in two runs to tie the score. After an intentional pass to Carl Yastrzemski, Jerry Moses singled off Tom Murphy to plate the winning marker.

Orioles 2, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Boog Powell hit a homer after a single by Frank Robinson in the eighth inning to carry the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Angels. Although allowing only four hits, Mike Cuellar had to pitch out of three jams to subdue the Angels, who failed to score with the bases loaded and two out in first inning, with a runner on third and one out in the seventh and with a runner on third and none out in the ninth.

Tigers 5, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (day game):
With the aid of homers by Al Kaline and Jim Northrup, the Tigers gained a 5-4 victory over the Brewers, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. Kaline accounted for the first run in the third inning. The Tigers picked up another in the sixth and added their final tallies in the seventh, two scoring on Northrup's smash. Mickey Lolich, who yielded only three hits and one run in the first seven innings, was kayoed in eighth when the Brewers tightened the game.

Yankees 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
The shutout relief pitching of Lindy McDaniel over the last three and two-thirds innings saved the Yankees' 4-2 victory over the Twins. Rick Renick hit two homers for the Twins, his second blow resulting in Mike Kekich's departure in favor of McDaniel. Jerry Kenney and Roy White hit triples to pace the Yankees' attack.

Indians 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Sam McDowell pitched a two-hitter and was the winner in a duel with Blue Moon Odom when the Indians scored two unearned runs on errors by Bert Campaneris to defeat the Athletics, 2-1. Odom, who yielded four hits, was the loser on his 25th birthday. The Indians scored initially in the third inning on a single by Jack Heidemann, a sacrifice, an error by Campaneris and an infield out by Eddie Leon. The A's run came on a homer by Joe Rudi in the fourth. Ray Fosse grounded to Campaneris in the seventh and reached second on the shortstop's wild throw. After advancing on a passed ball, Fosse scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Heidemann.

Senators 5, Royals 4 at Washington (night game):
After the Royals scored two runs in the top half of the 12th inning, the Senators came back with a three-run rally to pull out a 5-4 victory. The Royals' first two tallies of the game came on a homer by Ed Kirkpatrick in the eighth. Ellie Rodriguez, who drove in the Senators' initial run with a single in the first, tied the score with another single in the eighth. Joe Keough sent the Royals ahead with a homer in 12th after Bob Oliver struck out but reached first on a passed ball. In the Senators' half, a single by Aurelio Rodriguez, a double by Jim French and single by Bernie Allen tied the score. After a walk to Dave Nelson and a pop-up by Ed Brinkman, Del Unser capped the Nats' rally with a single, scoring Allen.

Braves 5, Phillies 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron drove in two runs with a double and Rico Carty followed with a homer as the Braves exploded in the seventh inning to beat the Phillies, 5-2. Mike Lum led off the stanza with a single and was forced by Pat Jarvis. Gil Garrido singled, but Felix Millan flied out before Aaron and Carty boomed their bats.

Reds 6, Expos 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
After wasting numerous scoring opportunities while stranding 16 runners, the Reds ended a frustrating game when Pete Rose walked and Bobby Tolan homered in the ninth inning to beat the Expos, 6-4. The pass to Rose was the 12th issued by Expos' pitchers. Reds' hurlers walked six. Johnny Bench also homered for the Reds. Ron Fairly hit two doubles and batted in two for the Expos.

Astros 5, Mets 0 at New York (night game):
Tom Seaver was handed his third straight defeat when the Astros shut out the Mets, 5-0, behind the combined three-hit pitching of Tom Griffin and Jack Billingham. Griffin was hit on the right elbow by a batted ball with two out in fifth inning, forcing him to leave the mound in favor of Billingham. The Astros ripped into Seaver for four runs in the fifth. Doug Rader opened the outburst with a homer. Singles by Johnny Edwards and Jesus Alou, around a sacrifice, added another counter. Joe Morgan then walked and Jim Wynn drove in two more runs with a double. Wynn climaxed the scoring with a homer in the seventh.

Pirates 6, Giants 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A pair of three-run bursts, featuring a double by Matty Alou and single by Manny Sanguillen, carried the Pirates to a 6-3 victory over the Giants. In the second inning, Al Oliver singled, Bob Robertson doubled and both scored on a single by Sanguillen, who also crossed the plate on an infield out, a passed ball and a balk. Robertson walked in the sixth and raced to third on a wild pitch. Sanguillen also walked. Freddie Patek bunted safely, scoring Robertson. Bob Veale beat out a bunt and Alou followed with a two-run single.

Dodgers 8, Cardinals 6 at St. Louis (night game):
Willie Davis drove in four runs and scored two himself to lead the Dodgers to an 8-6 victory over the Cardinals. The speedy center fielder tripled with two men on base in the first inning and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Billy Grabarkewitz. An infield out by Davis added a run in the second. The Cards tied the score in their half of the second, featuring a bases-loaded single by Vic Davalillo, and took the lead in the third. Davis tripled again in the fifth and counted on a sacrifice fly by Wes Parker. The Dodgers scored twice in the sixth on a single by Jim Lefebvre, a sacrifice and successive doubles by Ted Sizemore and Maury Wills. Davis accounted for his fourth RBI of the game with a single in the ninth inning.
