Today's scores and summaries:
Dodgers 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Billy Grabarkewltz, who beat the Cardinals with a two-run homer in the previous day's game, turned the trick again to give the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Cubs in a contest stopped by rain with two out in the top half of seventh inning. The Dodgers took a 2-0 lead in the first on singles by Maury Wills and Manny Mota, a double by Willie Davis and a wild pitch, but the Cubs struck back with four runs in the fifth on two walks and four consecutive singles. Davis opened the sixth with a triple, Wes Parker followed with a double and Grabarkewltz then hit his game-winning homer.
Pirates 5, Padres 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dock Ellis, who pitched a six-hitter, also reached base twice with a single and forceout, stole one base and scored two runs to take an all-around role in the Pirates' 5-1 victory over the Padres. Ellis' single, a double by Matty Alou and sacrifice flies by Gene Alley and Willie Stargell produced two runs for the Pirates in the third inning. The Padres picked up their tally in the fourth on singles by Steve Huntz and Ollie Brown, around a wild pitch, but the Pirates iced the decision with three runs in the seventh. Ellis, after forcing Richie Hebner, stole second and scored on Alou's second double of the game.
