Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Twins 1 at Boston (night game):
Billy Conigliaro, subbing for his injured brother, Tony, smashed a homer and Mike Andrews collected four hits as the Red Sox defeated the Twins, 5-1. Andrews singled and scored in the first inning and drove in a run with a double in the fourth after Conigliaro had hit his homer. In the fifth, Conigliaro was nicked by a pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Luis Alvarado.

Angels 3, Tigers 2 at California (night game):
A triple by Jay Johnstone, leading off the 10th inning, and a sacrifice fly by Jim Fregosi gave the Angels a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. After Johnstone's three-bagger, Joe Niekro retired Joe Azcue. The Tigers then decided to pass Tom Silverio and Sandy Alomar intentionally, hoping to set up a double play, but Fregosi hit his fly to right field and Johnstone beat the throw to the plate after the catch by Jim Northrup.

[DH] Indians 4, Brewers 1 (night game) / Indians 9, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The two-hit pitching of Sam McDowell in the first game and five homers in the second game enabled the Indians to sweep a twi-night doubleheader with the Brewers, 4-1 and 9-5. Graig Nettles, who homered for the Indians in the lidlifter, smashed two in the nightcap, as did Duke Sims. Ray Fosse added the Tribe's fifth homer of the game. Danny Walton, who doubled and scored the Brewers' run off McDowell, also hit a homer in the second game.

Yankees 3, Royals 2 at New York (night game):
Curt Blefary hit his first homer of the season in the eighth inning to provide the Yankees' deciding run in a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Blefary also batted in the Yankees' first run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Another sacrifice fly by Jerry Kenney added a run in the fifth. The Royals rallied for their runs with five singles in the ninth before Lindy McDaniel relieved Fritz Peterson and retired Billy Sorrell to save the game.

Orioles 5, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Jim Palmer turned in his seventh complete game of the season and gained his seventh victory in nine decisions when the Orioles defeated the Athletics, 5-1. The Orioles' first two runs off Chuck Dobson were unearned, but a legitimate tally followed in the third inning on a walk, a single by Boog Powell, a sacrifice and an infield out. Merv Rettenmund drove in the Orioles' other runs with a double off reliever Al Downing in the seventh.

Senators 4, White Sox 3 at Washington (night game):
While the White Sox as a team collected only four hits, Ed Stroud rapped four successive singles to pace the Senators to a 4-3 victory. The White Sox scored twice without the benefit of a safety in the first inning on two walks, an error and a pair of forceouts, but Stroud singled and Frank Howard homered to tie the score in the sixth. Stroud, Howard and Mike Epstein hit singles to snap the deadlock in the eighth and Aurelio Rodriguez followed with a sacrifice fly to plate the deciding run. A double by Tommy McCraw led to a run for the White Sox on a balk in the ninth inning.

Braves 4, Mets 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Phil Niekro pitched a four-hitter and Hank Aaron smashed his first homer since May 17 to clinch the Braves' 4-1 victory over the Mets. The Braves started with a run on three walks and an infield out in the first inning. Tommie Agee accounted for the Mets' marker with a homer in the third, but singles by Rico Carty and Bob Didier, around a walk, put the Braves back in the lead in the fourth and Aaron wrapped it up with a two-run wallop in the seventh.

Reds 7, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench belted two homers and Tony Perez poked one to power the Reds to 7-2 victory over the Phillies in a game halted by rain in the top half of the eighth inning. Perez accounted for the first of the Reds' two runs in the fourth. Bench's first homer of the game also was a bases-empty blow in the sixth, but his second smash came with two aboard in the seventh.

Astros 6, Expos 4 at Houston (night game):
Johnny Edwards, who went into the game batting only .167, broke out of his slump with a single and a triple to help the Astros defeat the Expos, 6-4. Edwards drove in two runs and scored two. Adolfo Phillips batted in three for the Expos, who lost their ninth straight.

Padres 14, Pirates 8 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Padres set a club record for the most hits in a nine-inning game, smashing 19, and beat the Pirates in a slugfest, 14-8. The Pirates had 16 hits. The Padres kayoed Bob Veale in the first inning, a double by Ollie Brown and singles by Tommy Dean and Gary Ross each driving in two runs. Cito Gaston homered with a man on base in the second. Steve Huntz drove in a pair with a double in the third. Chris Cannizzaro, Dean and Jose Arcia hit triples in another two-run burst by the Padres in the fifth. The Pirates' attack included a homer by Willie Stargell and two triples by Al Oliver.

Cardinals 12, Giants 1 at St. Louis (night game):
The slugging of Dick Allen, who drove in seven runs, paced the Cardinals to a 12-1 victory over the Giants behind the four-hit pitching of Steve Carlton. Allen drove in a run with a single in the first inning, homered with a man on base in the fifth and capped his night's work with a grand slam in the eighth. Carlton, who joined in the Cards' attack with three singles, lost his bid for a shutout when Willie McCovey homered in the sixth.
