Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 5, Angels 4 at California (night game):
Mickey Stanley singled in the 11th inning, stole second and scored on a single by Willie Horton to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Angels. The Tigers were held to two hits by Andy Messersmith in the first eight innings and were losing, 3-0, going into the ninth when they exploded for four runs. With one out, Gates Brown delivered a pinch-homer and Al Kaline singled. Paul Doyle relieved and yielded a pinch-single by Stanley. Ken Tatum took over and got Horton to ground into a forceout, but Jim Northrup followed with a two-run homer to send the Tigers ahead. The Angels came back in their half with a run-scoring single by Alex Johnson to force the game into overtime.
Indians 7, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (night game):
Duke Sims smashed two homers for the second successive game and drove in four runs to supply most of the Indians' power in a 7-6 victory over Brewers. Sims connected with two men on base in the first inning to start the Indians' scoring and then broke a 4-4 tie with a solo shot in the third. The Tribe added two tallies in the sixth on a double by Ted Uhlaender, singles by Vada Pinson and Tony Horton and a grounder by Ray Fosse. Tommy Harper and Ted Savage each drove in two runs for Brewers, Harper's RBIs coming on a homer.
Yankees 5, Royals 3 at New York (night game):
Batting in succession, Bobby Murcer tripled, Roy White doubled and Danny Cater homered as the Yankees scored three runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Royals, 5-3. A homer by Amos Otis had helped the Royals to a 3-2 lead before the Yankees' extra-base barrage.
A's 4, Orioles 1 at Oakland (night game):
A homer by Sal Bando with two men on base in the eighth inning propelled the Athletics to a 4-1 victory over the Orioles. Banclo's belt off Mike Cuellar followed singles by Felipe Alou and Joe Rudi. Frank Fernandez also homered for the A's to account for their initial run in the second inning. Rollie Fingers held the Orioles to one hit until the seventh inning when Frank Robinson homered to tie the score. Fingers went out for a pinch-hitter in the A's half of the seventh and Mudcat Grant was the winner in relief.
Senators 5, White Sox 4 at Washington (night game):
A walk to Frank Howard and singles by Rick Reichardt and Aurelio Rodriguez in the eighth inning produced the run that enabled the Senators to edge the White Sox, 5-4. The White Sox took a 3-0 lead, but the Senators erupted for four runs in the fourth. Howard doubled and Rodriguez tripled to drive in the first two runs and, after a pass to Ed Stroud, Paul Casanova plated the pair with a double. The Nats then increased their margin to 5-3 in the eighth before the White Sox fell short with a run in the ninth on a triple by Bill Melton and a single by Duane Josephson.
Cubs 6, Dodgers 5 at Chicago (day game):
After failing to hold a 5-0 lead, the Cubs scored on successive singles by Glenn Beckert, Billy Williams and Jim Hickman in the 11th inning to defeat the Dodgers, 6-5. The Cubs kayoed Alan Foster while scoring three times in the first inning and added two runs on a bases-loaded single by Williams in the fourth. The Dodgers' first three runs -- two in the seventh and one in the eighth -- were unearned before they tied the score in the ninth with singles by Andy Kosco and Ted Sizemore, a pass to Willie Crawford, a sacrifice fly by Tom Haller and a grounder by Maury Wills.
Phillies 11, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Phillies broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run single by Larry Hisle in the seventh inning and then added five runs in the ninth to clinch a 11-4 victory over the Reds. Tony Taylor and Denny Doyle homered for the Phillies. A walk to Taylor, a double by Doyle and a pass to Scott Reid loaded the bases for Hisle's tie-breaking hit. The Phillies bunched three hits with three walks and an error for their runs in the ninth.
Astros 5, Expos 0 at Houston (night game):
Making his first start of the season, Jack Billingham pitched the Astros to a 5-0 victory over the Expos, who went down to their 10th straight defeat. Balor Moore, a 19-year-old rookie from Deer Park, Tex., a suburb of Houston, was the loser in his first major league start. Billingham also singled and scored the first of the Astros' two runs in the third inning. Joe Pepitone hit a two-run single when the Astros wound up their scoring in the sixth.
Cardinals 6, Giants 5 at St. Louis (night game):
Bob Gibson supported himself at bat with three productive singles while pitching the Cardinals to a 6-5 victory over the Giants. Gibson batted in one run in the second inning, helped set up another in the fourth and then singled to cap the Cardinals' three-run rally in the seventh. Ken Henderson and Dick Dietz each drove in two runs for the Giants, who held a 5-3 lead before the Cardinal comeback. Dick Allen started the winning rally with a single, Joe Hague walked and Ted Simmons singled to load the bases. Vic Davalillo batted for Julian Javier and singled to drive in two runs. After pinch-hitter Leron Lee struck out, Gibson lashed a single to drive in the winning run.
