Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Twins 1 at Boston (day game):
Successive homers by Mike Andrews and Billy Conigliaro in the sixth inning, Andrews' blow coming with a man on base, wrapped up the scoring for the Red Sox in their 5-1 victory over the Twins. Andrews' homer kayoed Jim Kaat and Conigliaro's clout came on the second pitch thrown by reliever Bill Zepp. Kaat's defeat was only his eighth at the hands of the Red Sox, whom he had vanquished 18 times.

Tigers 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Al Kaline, who batted in a run with a single in the third inning, drove two more home with a double in the eighth to provide the Tigers with a 4-2 victory over the Angels. Kaline's tie-breaking double came with two out after Dick McAuliffe and Cesar Gutierrez had reached base with singles.

Indians 8, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee (day game):
Led by Ray Fosse, who drove in four runs, the Indians defeated the Brewers, 8-4, and spoiled the major league debut of Ray Peters, a rookie righthander from Portland (Pacific Coast), who was batted out in the third inning. Fosse knocked in a run with a single in the third and homered with two on base in the sixth. Barry Moore, who started on the mound for the Indians, pitched to only one batter, Tommy Harper, who doubled, and then left the game complaining of a sore neck. The Indians used three more pitchers. Dean Chance received credit for a save after striking out Max Alvis with the bases loaded in the ninth.

Yankees 2, Royals 1 at New York (night game):
The Yankees, who were held hitless by Jim Rooker in the first eight innings, pushed across a run in the ninth to tie the score at 1-1 and then beat the Royals in the 12th, 2-1, on a sacrifice fly by Horace Clarke with the bases loaded. The Royals scored an unearned run in the first inning. Rooker turned back the Yankees until his no-hit bid was broken when Clarke singled in the ninth. Bobby Murcer, after failing twice in bunt attempts, doubled to drive in Clarke. In the 12th, Ron Woods singled and was forced by John Ellis. A single by Gene Michael and a walk to Pete Ward loaded the bases before Moe Drabowsky relieved Rooker. Clarke then ended the game with his sacrifice fly, scoring pinch-runner Jerry Kenney.

A's 4, Orioles 2 at Oakland (night game):
For the second straight night, homers by Frank Fernandez and Sal Bando, together with the relief pitching of Mudcat Grant, enabled the Athletics to defeat the Orioles, this time by the score of 4-2. Joe Rudi started the sixth inning with a safe bunt, took second on a sacrifice and crossed the plate on a single by Don Mincher to tie the score at 1-1. Fernandez then smashed his homer to send the A's ahead, 3-1. Bando's belt added an extra run in the seventh. Grant, who was the winner in relief in the previous night's game, returned to the mound and saved the decision for Catfish Hunter after taking over with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. Merv Rettenmund singled to drive in a run, but Brooks Robinson grounded to Grant, who started a double play.

White Sox 7, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Swinging at the first pitch of the game, Walt Williams homered to start the White Sox off to a 7-3 victory over the Senators. After Williams' wallop, the White Sox added three runs on an error, singles by Carlos May and Bill Melton, two infield outs and a double by Bobby Knoop. Williams tripled in the second and scored on a single by Luis Aparicio, who also drove in another run with a hit in the seventh. Melton homered in the eighth.

Braves 3, Mets 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Although pitching a five-hitter, Tom Seaver was handed his fourth straight setback when the Braves defeated the Mets, 3-1. The Mets' run off Pat Jarvis, who hurled a seven-hitter, scored in the third inning on a single by Tommie Agee, a theft of second and a single by Bud Harrelson. Orlando Cepeda batted in the tying run with a single in the fourth and Jarvis scored the leading run in the fifth. Bob Tillman opened that inning with a walk and was forced by Jarvis, who stopped at second on a single by Gil Garrido, moved to third when Felix Millan forced Garrido, and came home on a wild pitch. Rico Carty accounted for the last run with a homer in the sixth.

Astros 8, Expos 0 at Houston (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Doug Rader in the first inning and another four-run burst in the eighth kayoed the Expos, who lost to the Astros, 8-0, for their 11th straight defeat. With two out in the first, Jim Wynn walked, Tommy Davis doubled and Denis Menke drew an intentional pass to set the scene for Rader's jackpot wallop off Dan McGinn. The slam was the first by any Houston batter this season. The Astros added other runs in the eighth on a homer by Joe Pepitone with a man on base, a single by Tom Griffin, pass to Jesus Alou and singles by Joe Morgan and Wynn. Four double plays helped Griffin end his personal five-game losing streak.

Dodgers 5, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
With principal batting assistance from Wes Parker, Claude Osteen posted his fifth straight victory for the Dodgers, defeating the Pirates, 5-0. A walk to Maury Wills, triple by Willie Davis and groundout by Parker in the first inning gave the Dodgers their start against Steve Blass, who went down to his seventh straight loss. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the sixth and Parker drove in two more runs with a double. Davis hit a sacrifice fly to account for the final marker.
