Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Royals 2 at Boston (night game):
Mike Nagy received credit for his first victory since returning to the Red Sox from the minors when Carl Yastrzemski wallopped a long homer in the fifth inning to beat the Royals, 4-2. With the score tied, 2-2, Mike Andrews reached base on an error and Yastrzemski followed with his drive into the right-center field stands, more than 430 feet from home plate. Bob Oliver batted in both of the Royals' runs with a homer and a single.

Angels 2, Indians 1 at California (night game):
Billy Cowan, who was inserted at first base to give the Angels more righthanded punch, smashed his first homer of the season to provide the winning run in a 2-1 victory over the Indians. Vada Pinson homered for the Indians' marker in the first inning and the Angels tied the score in the home half a on walk, infield out and single by Alex Johnson before Cowan decided the game in the fourth.

Orioles 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Homers by Merv Rettenmund and Elrod Hendricks helped the Orioles defeat the Brewers, 3-2. Rettenmund's rap in the fourth inning broke a 1-1 tie and Hendricks' homer in the fifth provided the winning run.

Yankees 10, White Sox 1 at New York (night game):
Bobby Murcer smashed two homers and Roy White whacked one among three hits apiece to lead the Yankees' attack in a 10-1 victory over the White Sox. Mel Stottlemyre, who allowed five hits, pitched the route for only the second time this season.

A's 4, Tigers 2 at Oakland (night game):
Al Kaline collected the 2,500th hit of his major league career and Willie Horton drove in his 500th run, but the Athletics scored four unearned runs after two were out in the sixth inning to defeat the Tigers, 4-2. Kaline singled for his milestone hit in the fifth inning, took second on a single by Norm Cash and scored when Horton singled. Bert Campaneris singled with two away in the A's sixth and scored when Earl Wilson threw wildly on a smash to the mound by Felipe Alou. A single by Joe Rudi plated Alou to tie the game at 2-2. After Sal Bando walked, Don Mincher and Frank Fernandez followed with run-scoring singles.

Twins 2, Senators 1 at Washington (night game):
Bert Blyleven, a 19-year-old righthander, made his major league debut with a victory when the Twins beat the Senators, 2-1. Blyleven, who was called up from Evansville (American Association) to replace the injured Luis Tiant, gave up a homer by Lee Maye in the first inning but yielded only four more hits before Ron Perranoski came in to pitch the last two frames. Cesar Tovar walked for the Twins in their half of the first, stole second and scored on a single by Tony Oliva. The Twins then broke the 1-1 tie in the fifth when Frank Quilici beat out an infield hit, Blyleven sacrificed and Tovar singled.

Expos 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The Expos ended their 11-game losing streak when Coco Laboy homered in the ninth inning to beat the Braves, 3-2. The Braves took the lead with an unearned run in the third and added their other tally in the fifth on a bases-loaded single by Felix Millan. The Expos rallied to tie the score with a double by John Boccabella, a single by Bobby Wine and a double by Bob Bailey in the seventh.

Cubs 12, Giants 8 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs bombed Juan Marichal and three relievers for 16 hits, equaling their high for any game this season, and beat the Giants, 12-8. Jim Hickman led the Cubs' attack with two doubles and two singles. Marichal gave up 11 hits and was charged with eight runs before being lifted in the sixth inning. However, the Giants' veteran was the victim of sloppy support and four of the Cubs' runs were unearned. After a double by Don Kessinger and single by Glenn Beckert kayoed Marichal, Frank Reberger relieved and uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Kessinger to score. Johnny Callison doubled to drive in Beckert, and Ron Santo then capped the inning with a homer.

Reds 5, Mets 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The speed of Bobby Tolan, who walked in the sixth inning, stole second and scored on a single by Lee May, enabled the Reds to edge the Mets, 5-4, in a game stopped by rain with one out in the home half of the eighth. Homers by Joe Foy and Tommie Agee gave the Mets a 2-1 lead in the second, but the Reds went ahead in the third when Jim McGlothlin and Pete Rose singled and Tony Perez pounded his 20th homer of the season. Agee singled for his second RBI of the game in the fourth and the Mets tied the score with a sacrifice fly by Bud Harrelson in the sixth before Tolan's 17th straight successful steal and 19th in 21 attempts set up the winning run.

Astros 8, Phillies 7 at Houston (night game):
After rallying to tie the score, the Astros pushed across a run in the 11th inning to beat the Phillies, 8-7. Larry Bowa had a hand in the Phillies' first four runs, scoring two and driving in two with a triple. Ron Stone doubled with the bases loaded in the eighth, counting three other runs and putting the Phillies ahead, 7-5. The Astros picked up a run on singles by Norm Miller and Marty Martinez and a double by Joe Morgan in their half of the eighth and tied the count in the ninth on a walk to Jim Wynn, a single by Doug Rader and sacrifice fly by Miller. In the 11th, Wynn singled, Rader sacrificed and Denis Menke broke up the game with a single.

Pirates 3, Dodgers 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Bob Moose scattered six hits and pitched the Pirates to a 3-0 victory over the Dodgers. Joe Moeller, who had not yielded an earned run in 18 2/3 innings of relief work, made his first start of the season for the Dodgers and was tagged for the first tally on a triple by Richie Hebner and single by Roberto Clemente in the fourth. Singles by Gene Alley and Matty Alou, around a sacrifice, added a run in the fifth and the final marker followed in the sixth on singles by Al Oliver, Manny Sanguillen and Alley.

Padres 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Batting in two runs, including the winning marker in seventh inning, Cito Gaston led the Padres to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. A walk to Steve Huntz and a double by Nate Colbert produced the Padres' initial run in the first inning. Huntz drew a walk again in the third and counted on a double by Gaston. Then, in the seventh, Jose Arcia doubled and Gaston came through with the deciding single. Lou Brock, who hit a triple and double, scored both of the Cardinals' runs.
