Today's scores and summaries:

[DH] Red Sox 7, Royals 4 (day game) / Red Sox 5, Royals 2 at Boston (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Rico Petrocelli gave the Red Sox a 5-2 victory to complete the sweep of a doubleheader with the Royals. The Red Sox won the first game, 7-4. Homers by Pat Kelly and Jackie Hernandez, each with a man on base, accounted for the Royals' runs in the lidlifter. The Red Sox broke the 4-4 tie with two unearned runs in the sixth inning on a pass to Dick Schofield, double error by Tom Burgmeier on a bunt by Mike Andrews, sacrifice fly by Reggie Smith and single by Tony Conigliaro, who drove in his third run of the game. Ken Brett homered for the final run in the eighth. In the nightcap, a single by Andrews and passes to Carl Yastrzemski and Conigliaro loaded the bases for Petrocelli's slam.

Indians 6, Angels 4 at California (day game):
With last-out help from Fred Lasher, Rich Hand gained his first major league victory when the Indians defeated the Angels, 6-4. Jim Fregosi homered for the Angels in the fourth and sixth innings. When Ken McMullen also hit for the circuit with a man on base in the ninth, Lasher took over. The Indians had a two-run homer by Graig Nettles in the third. In the eighth, Jack Heidemann drove in two runs with a bases-loaded double and Hand helped himself with a sacrifice fly.

Orioles 7, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (day game):
Three homers helped the Orioles emerge with a 7-6 victory over the Brewers. Frank Robinson and Boog Powell hit consecutive homers to tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth inning. After adding a run in the fifth, the Orioles erupted for four in the eighth, two scoring on a round-tripper by Merv Rettenmund. The Brewers then fell short with a four-run rally in their half, three scoring on a pinch-homer by Phil Roof.

White Sox 4, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Playing before a Bat Day crowd of 65,880, the biggest turnout in the major leagues this season, the Yankees lost to the White Sox in 12 innings, 4-3. The Yankees took a 2-0 lead in the game, but the White Sox went ahead in the seventh inning when Duane Josephson singled and Tommy McCraw and Ken Berry homered. Horace Clarke homered to tie the score in the eighth. McCraw opened the 12th with a double and crossed the plate on an infield hit by Bobby Knoop and an error by Clarke. However, the run became earned when Berry followed with a single.

A's 5, Tigers 2 at Oakland (day game):
After Frank Fernandez homered in the ninth inning to tie the score, Joe Rudi came up as a pinch-hitter with two men on base and also hit for the circuit to give the Athletics a 5-2 victory over the Tigers. A homer by Willie Horton helped the Tigers to a 2-1 lead before Fernandez delivered the A's equalizer. Rick Monday then walked and Dick Green, who bunted, was safe on an error by Al Kaline. Rudi made two unsuccessful attempts to sacrifice before swinging away and hitting his homer.

Twins 10, Senators 9 at Washington (day game):
The Twins broke a tie with three runs in the 11th inning and then stood off a rally of the Senators to gain a 10-9 victory. Rich Reese, appearing as a pinch-hitter, delivered a grand-slam homer in the sixth inning to put the Twins ahead, 7-3, but the Senators came back with two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to force the game into overtime. In the 11th, consecutive singles by Leo Cardenas, Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva snapped the deadlock. Then, after Charlie Manuel singled to load the bases, Jim Holt knocked in two runs with a single, enabling the Twins to survive a two-run double by Frank Howard in the Senators' half.

Expos 10, Braves 1 at Atlanta (day game):
Completing a sweep of the three-game series, the Expos pounded out 15 hits, including two homers by Bob Bailey and one by Coco Laboy, to defeat the Braves, 10-1. Although tagged for 10 hits, Carl Morton might have posted a shutout, except for an error that gave the Braves an unearned run.

Cubs 8, Giants 4 at Chicago (day game):
In a game marked by eight homers, the Cubs cracked five for the distance and beat the Giants, 8-4. Willie Mays, Dick Dietz and Al Gallagher homered for the Giants. The Cubs started their cannonading with circuit clouts by Johnny Callison, Billy Williams and Jack Hiatt in the fourth inning. Gallagher, pinch-hitting, delivered his first major league homer in the seventh. A walk, a sacrifice and a single by Mays then tied the score at 4-4. In the Cubs half, a pass to Phil Regan, a sacrifice and a single by Williams sent the Cubs ahead again and Jim Hickman followed with a two-run homer. Cleo James wrapped up the victory with a round-tripper in the eighth.

Reds 10, Mets 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Johnny Bench belted a homer, double and sacrifice fly, driving in five runs, to pace the Reds' 17-hit attack in a 10-2 victory over the Mets, who went down to their fifth straight defeat. Bench cracked his homer with two men on base in third inning. Lee May also homered for the Reds and Tony Perez whacked a two-run triple. The Mets' eight hits off Wayne Simpson included a boundary belt by Ken Boswell.

Phillies 10, Astros 3 at Houston (day game):
Deron Johnson and Byron Browne batted in three runs apiece to lead the Phillies' production in a 10-3 victory over the Astros. Browne got his first RBI with a homer in the second inning. Johnson connected for the circuit with two men on base in the fifth and Browne added two runs with a triple in the seventh.

Pirates 3, Dodgers 1 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Freddie Patek tripled home two runs and then scored himself to back the four-hit pitching of Bob Veale as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 3-1. Patek's triple in the fifth inning followed a single by Bob Robertson and a ground-rule double by Manny Sanguillen. Matty Alou singled to plate Patek.

Cardinals 10, Padres 7 at St. Louis (day game):
On the verge of losing to the Padres for the third straight time, the Cardinals rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning and pulled out the final game of the series, 10-7. The Padres built up a 7-1 lead against Bob Gibson before Ted Simmons started the Cardinals' comeback by hitting his first major league homer with a man on base in the sixth. Vic Davalillo, batting for Gibson, opened the seventh with a single and then singled again on his second trip to drive in the Cards' final run of the rally. Lou Brock also had two of the Redbirds' eight hits during the stanza. Joe Torre and pinch-hitter Leron Lee each drove in two runs with doubles.
