Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 2, Angels 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Don Buford, who walked and scored an unearned run in the first inning, singled in the seventh and counted the tie-breaking tally on a triple by Merv Rettenmund to give the Orioles a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Jay Johnstone homered for the Angels' run.
Red Sox 7, White Sox 6 at Chicago (night game):
Bill Melton's second error of the game allowed Scott to score with two out in the 14th inning and handed the Red Sox a 7-6 victory over the White Sox. The Red Sox fell behind, 5-0, before starting their comeback with a freak grand slam by Rico Petrocelli in the fourth inning. After a single by Mike Andrews, a pass to Carl Yastrzemski and an error by Melton loaded the bases, Petrocelli hit a long fly that bounced off Tommy McCraw's glove into the right field bullpen. Ken Berry put the White Sox ahead again with a homer in the seventh, but Yastrzemski walked in the ninth and Tony Conigliaro hit for the circuit to tie the score. In the 14th. George Scott walked and raced to third on a passed ball. After a pass to Dick Schofield, Jerry Moses hit a grounder between short and third. Melton fumbled the ball and then threw wildly past second, trying for a forceout on Schofield, allowing Scott to score.
A's 6, Indians 4 at Cleveland (night game):
The Athletics, who sent 10 men to the plate and scored four runs on six hits in the second inning, added two later tallies on a wild pitch and an error to defeat the Indians, 6-4. Duke Sims and Ray Fosse hit homers for the Indians.
Tigers 7, Brewers 5 at Detroit (night game):
Failing to hold a four-run lead, the Brewers lost to the Tigers, 7-5, for their 16th straight defeat in road games. After the Brewers took a 4-0 lead in the second inning, Dick McAuliffe homered for the Tigers in the third and again in the fifth when the Motor City crew scored two runs. McAuliffe walked in the seventh and Al Kaline smashed a homer to send the Tigers ahead. Pinch-hitter Gates Brown, batting for Cesar Gutierrez, drove in two more runs with a single before the inning ended. Mike Hegan homered for the Brewers in the eighth.
Senators 8, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Senators snapped a five-game losing streak when Joe Coleman pitched a five-hitter to beat the Royals, 8-1. The Senators loaded the bases on three walks in the second inning and scored their first two runs on a single by Frank Howard. Paul Casanova also drove in two runs with a double and a single, while Del Unser added a homer to the Nats' attack.
Yankees 2, Twins 1 at New York (night game):
Mel Stottlemyre triumphed in a duel with Bert Blyleven when Horace Clarke hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Yankees a 2-1 victory over the Twins. The Twins' run counted in the fourth on a triple by Tony Oliva and an infield out by Rich Reese. Blyleven, the Twins' 19-year-old rookie righthander, retired the first two batters in the fifth, but Stottlemyre then singled and Clarke followed with his winning homer.
Astros 5, Mets 3 at Houston (night game):
Joe Pepitone, who hit five grand slams while with the Yankees, smashed the first of his career in the N. L. to power the Astros to a 5-3 victory over the Mets. Norm Miller and Doug Rader walked in the fourth inning, Hector Torres beat out an infield hit and Denny Lemaster drew a walk to force in one run before Pepitone pounded his slam off Nolan Ryan.
Dodgers 4, Cardinals 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Joe Moeller turned in his first complete game since May 29, 1964, and pitched the Dodgers to a 4-2 victory over the Cardinals. The Dodgers counted twice without the benefit of a hit in the first inning. Maury Wills walked, Manny Mota was nicked by a pitch and, after a double steal, runs scored on an infield out and a wild pitch. Willie Davis was safe on an error and scored an unearned run in the fifth on a theft of second and a single by Billy Grabarkewitz. The final Dodger run was forced across the plate in the seventh when Willie Crawford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Reds 7, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Tony Perez and Bernie Carbo each homered with two men on base to support Jim McGlothlin, who yielded only three hits and pitched the Reds to a 7-0 victory over the Expos. Perez homered in the first inning after a single by Angel Bravo and a double by Pete Rose. Another double by Rose, a pass to Perez and a double by Johnny Bench added a run in the seventh before Carbo wrapped up the scoring with a round-tripper.
Braves 5, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Geting three-hit pitching from George Stone, the Braves ended a four-game losing streak by defeating the Phillies, 5-1. A double by Tony Taylor, bunt by Larry Bowa and sacrifice fly by Larry Hisle accounted for the Phillies' run in the first inning. The Braves erupted for four runs in the second after loading the bases on two walks around a single by Tony Gonzalez. Bob Tillman singled to produce the first two tallies and Stone drove in the third run with an infield hit. After Gil Garrido bunted safely, Felix Millan hit a sacrifice fly to plate the fourth marker.
Padres 11, Cubs 8 at San Diego (night game):
Although hitting only two homers to four for the Cubs, the Padres batted their way to an 11-8 victory. The Cubs started the slugging with a two-run homer by Paul Popovich to tie the score in the third, but Ivan Murrell connected for the circuit in the Padres' half. Homers by Billy Williams and Jim Hickman in the fourth sent the Cubs ahead again. The Padres loaded the bases in their half and scored three runs on singles by Cito Gaston and Steve Huntz. After adding two runs, one on a round-tripper by Ollie Brown in the seventh, the Padres scored three times in the eighth for their winning margin. Chris Cannizzaro singled to account for two RBIs. Johnny Callison homered with a man on base when the Cubs rallied for four runs in the ninth.
Giants 4, Pirates 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Homers by Willie McCovey, Willie Mays and Ken Henderson carried the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Pirates. After the Pirates rapped four consecutive singles for their runs in the first inning, Ron Hunt singled in the Giants' half and McCovey tied the score with a 450-foot smash. Mays and Henderson then broke the deadlock with their round-trippers in the eighth.
