Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 9, Angels 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Allowing only two hits, Mike Cuellar breezed to a 9-1 victory over the Angels as the Orioles backed their lefthander with four homers. Merv Rettenmund started the scoring in the first inning and, after Brooks Robinson was safe on an error, Frank Robinson also hit for the circuit. Boog Powell homered with a man on base in the third and Davey Johnson with two aboard in the fifth.

Indians 6, A's 5 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians, who hit four homers to account for all their runs, came from behind to tie the score in ninth inning and then rallied on another round-tripper to beat the Athletics in the 10th, 6-5. A two-run single by Chuck Dobson and homers by Felipe Alou and Joe Rudi gave the A's a 4-2 lead, with the Indians' counters coming on boundary belts by Jack Heidemann and Eddie Leon. Chuck Hinton, pinch-hitting with a man on base and two out in the ninth, delivered his first homer of the season to tie the score. The A's went ahead again in the 10th when Sal Bando was hit by a pitch and Tony LaRussa, running for him, scored on singles by Alou and Frank Fernandez. In the Indians' half, Vada Pinson doubled and Roy Foster won the game with a homer.

Tigers 6, Brewers 2 at Detroit (night game):
Crushing the Brewers' attempt to play the percentages, Jim Northrup smashed a grand-slam homer with two out in the eighth inning to power the Tigers to a 6-2 victory. Elliott Maddox walked with one away, Al Kaline singled and Norm Cash drew a pass to load the bases. The Brewers removed Gene Brabender and brought in righthander Dave Baldwin, who struck out Willie Horton. Lefthander John O'Donoghue then replaced Baldwin and ran the count on Northrup to three balls and one strike before the lefthanded batter hit the eighth grand slam of his major league career.

Dodgers 2, Cardinals 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers scored in the 12th inning on a single by Maury Wills, a wild pitch by Frank Linzy and a double by Willie Davis to defeat the Cardinals, 2-1. The Cardinals' run counted in the fourth when Dick Allen and Joe Torre singled and Joe Hague lofted a sacrifice fly. Manny Mota tied the score with a homer in the Dodgers' half.

Expos 8, Reds 4 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos pounded Jim Merritt for five runs in the first inning, three scoring on a homer by John Bateman, and beat the Reds, 8-4. Doubles by Don Hahn and Rusty Staub and singles by Adolfo Phillips and Coco Laboy produced two runs in the Expos' fast getaway before Bateman connected for the circuit. The Expos added another pair off Merritt in the sixth when John Boccabella was safe on an error and Bob Bailey followed with a pinch-homer. Tony Perez and Johnny Bench belted round-trippers for the Reds.

Braves 6, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Two unearned runs in the sixth inning provided the Braves with their winning margin in a 6-4 victory over the Phillies. After Bob Tillman and Gil Garrido singled, Felix Millan hit safely to right field. Oscar Gamble threw to the plate in time to nail Tillman, but the runner knocked the ball out of catcher Doc Edwards' glove. Garrido also scored on the error.

Cubs 7, Padres 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Cubs drew 11 walks to go with nine hits and had an easy time beating the Padres, 7-1. Mike Corkins passed Johnny Caillison with the bases loaded in the first inning to force in the Cubs' initial run. Bill Hands gave up a tally on singles by Dave Campbell, Steve Huntz and Nate Colbert in the Padres' half, but then allowed only three more hits the rest of the way. The Cubs broke away with two runs in the second on a single by Cleo James, a sacrifice, a single by Glenn Beckert and a double by Billy Williams. Jim Hickman hit the 100th homer of his major league career with a man on base in the sixth.
