Today's scores and summaries:
Brewers 9, Orioles 6 at Baltimore (night game):
Merv Rettenmund hit a grand-slam homer for the Orioles in the first inning, but the Brewers rallied to gain a 9-6 victory, capping their comeback with a six-run outburst in the eighth inning. Rettenmund's slam and a two-run homer by Chico Salmon in the sixth gave the Orioles a 6-3 lead, one of the Brewers' tallies coming on a round-tripper by Mike Hegan. Singles by Tommy Harper and Ted Savage, around a pass to Hegan, produced the first run for the Brewers in the eighth. Tito Francona singled for another tally. After a pass to Ted Kubiak loaded the bases, Roberto Pena cleared the sacks with a double. Jerry McNertney followed with a single to drive in Pena with the final run.
Indians 3, Angels 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A single by Jack Heidemann in the 12th inning, his fourth hit of the game, scored Graig Nettles from second base and gave the Indians a 3-2 victory over the Angels. Heidemann doubled in the first inning and counted the Tribe's initial run on a single by Ray Fosse. Eddie Leon homered in the second. The Angels rallied to tie the score in the ninth when Joe Azcue delivered a pinch-single with the bases loaded. Nettles and Rich Rollins walked with two out in the 12th before Paul Doyle relieved Mel Queen. Heidemann fouled off five pitches and then lined his single.
A's 12, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
In a slugfest marked by two grand-slam homers, the Athletics beat the Tigers, 12-7. Dick McAuliffe hit his jackpot wallop for the Tigers off Chuck Dobson in the second inning after a triple by Elliott Maddox and two walks had the loaded bases. The A's came back with a six-run explosion in the third to take an 8-4 lead. After four singles produced the first run, Mickey Lolich replaced Niekro and struck out Don Mincher, but Frank Fernandez came to the plate and hit a grand slam. Rick Monday followed with another homer. The A's added four more runs in the seventh, two scoring an on a double by Reggie Jackson. In addition to McAuliffe's slam, Willie Horton and Al Kaline homered for the Tigers' other runs.
Royals 7, Red Sox 6 at Kansas City (night game):
Coming from behind with three runs in the ninth inning, the Royals defeated the Red Sox, 7-6. Ed Kirkpatrick and Pat Kelly hit two-run homers for the Royals, but the Red Sox held a 6-4 lead going into the last half of the ninth. Lou Piniella opened the Royals' rally with a single and stopped at second on another single by Paul Schaal. Jackie Hernandez followed with a safe bunt and when George Scott threw wildly to first, Piniella scored. Schaal reached third and Hernandez took second on the error. After an intentional pass to Billy Sorrell loaded the bases, Kelly tied the score with a sacrifice fly and Amos Otis won the game with a single.
Twins 5, Senators 3 at Minnesota (night game):

The youngster was lifted in the eighth inning after Maury Wills singled and manny Mota was safe on an error. Dave Giusti, who relieved, gave up run-scoring singles by Willie Davis and Wes Parker before clamping down. The Pirates' attack included a homer by Willie Stargell.
Cardinals 5, Padres 4 at San Diego (night game):
Catcher Ted Simmons' pickoff of Jose Arcia, when the pinch-runner strayed off second base, proved the key play as the Cardinals defeated the Padres. 5-4. With the Cardinals leading 5-3, Chris Cannizzaro singled in the eighth inning and gave way on the paths to Arcia, who stopped at second on a single by Al Ferrara. After Simmons nailed Arcia, the Padres were able to score only one run, instead of two, when Ramon Webster singled and Ron Slocum doubled. Joe Torre hit a homer in the eighth to provide the Cardinals' winning run.
