Brooks Robinson collected the 2,000th hit of his major league career with a dramatic three-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Orioles a 5-4 victory over the Senators. Frank Robinson singled and Boog Powell homered to produce two runs for the Orioles in the first inning, but the Senators tied the score in the second with the aid of doubles by Paul Casanova and Tim Cullen. Don Buford and Powell walked in the fifth ahead of Brooks Robinson's milestone smash. The Senators rallied in the ninth and chased Mike Cuellar. Pete Richert, who relieved with the bases loaded, gave up a two-run single by Lee Maye before recording the final out.
Yankees 8, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Backed by a 15-hit attack, Mel Stottlemyre gained his eighth victory in his last nine decisions as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 8-3. Stottlemyre gave up seven hits, including homers by Rico Petrocelli and Billy Conigliaro. Every player in the Yankees' starting lineup participated in the attack, Danny Cater leading the way with three singles.
Angels 4, Brewers 0 at California (night game):
Clyde Wright and Ken Tatum combined to pitch the Angels to a 4-0 victory over the Brewers. Wright, who gave up four hits, was removed with two men on base and one out in the eighth inning. Tatum retired the last five batters in succession. Jim Spencer homered for the first run of the game in the seventh inning and the Angels added other three in the eighth, two scoring on a double by Jim Fregosi.
Indians 2, Tigers 1 at Cleveland (day game):
With Roy Foster smashing two homers, the Indians extended their winning streak to seven games by defeating the Tigers, 2-1. Steve Dunning, who started for the Indians, gave up a homer by Eatl Wilson among three hits in the first six innings before going out for Dean Chance, who gained credit for the victory. After Wilson's wallop in the third, Foster tied the score in the Tribe's half and then whacked his second homer of the game for the winning run in the eighth.
Royals 5, Twins 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Ed Kirkpatrick batted in three runs with a double in the first inning and added a homer in the fourth to provide the Royals with a 5-3 victory over the Twins. Rod Carew produced the Twins' runs by hitting for the circuit with two aboard in the eighth.
A's 8, White Sox 5 at Oakland (day game):
The batting of Bert Campaneris and Joe Rudi, together with three hitless innings of winning relief by Mudcat Grant, enabled the Athletics to defeat the White Sox, 8-5. Campaneris homered with a man on base in the third and drove in two more runs with a double in the fourth. Rudi added a two-run homer in the fifth as the A's beat Barry Moore, who made his first start for the White Sox since being obtained from the Indians.
Astros 9, Braves 6 at Atlanta (night game):
A five-run outburst in the fifth inning, together with homers by Johnny Edwards and Bob Watson, enabled the Astros to end their five-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over the Braves. Jesus Alou singled with the bases loaded to drive in the Astros' first two runs in the fifth and when Rico Carty booted the ball in left field, another run crossed the plate. An infield out by Marty Martinez scored Alou. After a single by Cesar Cedeno and a forceout by Tommy Davis, Denis Menke tripled. Edwards homered with a man on base in the sixth and Watson added a solo swat in the eighth. Hank Aaron hit his 20th homer of the season for the Braves.
Cubs 8, Cardinals 3 at Chicago (day game):
Taking advantage of the wildness of Mike Torrez, the Cubs scored six runs in the first inning and defeated the Cardinals, 8-3. A pass to Paul Popovich and a triple by Billy Williams accounted for the first tally. After a walk to Jim Hickman, Williams scored on a wild pitch. Ron Santo drew a free ticket and Willie Smith singled to load the bases. Jimmie Hall then walked to force in a run and Jack Hiatt singled, driving in two more. After Billy McCool replaced Torrez, Bill Hands hit a sacrifice fly to put the capper on the Cubs' capers.
Reds 5, Dodgers 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
Homers by Johnny Bench, Tony Perez and Lee May powered the Reds past the Dodgers, 5-4, and enabled Jim McGlothlin to register his 10th victory of the season. Bench hit his homer in the second inning to tie the score at 1-1. Pete Rose singled in the third, Angesl Bravo walked and Perez poked his round-tripper. After Bench went out, May also hit for the circuit to provide the Reds' deciding run. The Dodgers kayoed McGlothlin while scoring twice in the seventh and added their final run when Wes Parker homered off Wayne Granger with two out in the ninth.
Phillies 2, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Reliever Tug McGraw walked pinch-hitter Ron Stone with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to hand the Phillies a 2-1 victory over the Mets. Jerry Koosman, who was the loser, was lifted after Deron Johnson singled and Rick Joseph beat out a bunt in the ninth. Ron Taylor relieved and, after a sacrifice, walked Oscar Gamble intentnonally to fill the sacks. The Mets then brought in McGraw and the Phillies called on Stone as a pinch-hitter for Doc Edwards.
Pirates 4, Expos 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
A single by Jerry May capped a three-run rally in the fifth inning and supplied the Pirates' winning margin in a 4-2 victory over the Expos. Matty Alou, who tripled to drive in the Pirates' initial run in the second, opened the fifth with a single. Richie Hebner walked. After failing to bunt, Dave Cash singled, scoring Alou. Hebner raced to third and Cash took second on the throw. An intentional pass to Bob Robertson brought up May, who singled to drive in two runs.
