Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Senators 2 at Baltimore (day game):
Dave McNally gained his 10th victory of the season and 100th of his major league career when the Orioles defeated the Senators, 4-2, to complete the sweep of the four-game series. The Orioles erased the Senators' 2-1 lead by scoring three runs in the third inning. Don Buford walked, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Brooks Robinson. After Boog Powell walked, Terry Crowley singled to drive in the tie-breaking tally. Crowley subsequently counted an insurance run on a single by Davey Johnson.

Yankees 14, Red Sox 10 at Boston (day game):
The Yankees exploded for six runs in the 11th inning to outslug the Red Sox, 14-10. Danny Cater, who drove in the tying tally in the eighth, singled in the 11th for his fifth hit of the game. Singles by Thurman Munson and Ron Hansen loaded the bases and after Curt Blefary popped up, Jerry Kenney singled to plate two runs. Lindy McDaniel followed with another two-run single. A single by Horace Clarke and a double by Bobby Murcer added a fifth tally. Cater, batting for the second time in the stanza, accounted for the last run with a sacrifice fly. The Red Sox stirred up a rally in their half of the 11th, but managed to get only two runs before McDaniel retired the side to wrap up his victory in relief.

Angels 6, Brewers 5 at California (day game):
Coming from behind, the Angels gained a 6-5 victory over the Brewers on a two-run double by Jay Johnstone with the bases loaded in the 10th inning. The Brewers built up a 4-1 lead, but Jim Fregosi started the Angels' rally with his 12th homer of the season and 100th of his major league career in the seventh. The Angels picked up another run in the eighth and tied the game in the ninth when Joe Azcue singled and pinch-runner Jarvis Tatum scored from third, after two out, on a single by Sandy Alomar. Mike Hegan doubled and Bob Burda singled to put the Brewers ahead again in the 10th, but in the Angels' half, a single by Fregosi, double by Alex Johnson and intentional pass to Jim Spencer loaded the bases to set the stage for Johnstone's game-winning double.

[DH] Tigers 7, Indians 2 (day game) / Tigers 9, Indians 8 at Cleveland (day game):
Cesar Gutierrez became the first player in modern major league history to collect seven straight hits in one game as the Tigers defeated the Indians in 12 innings, 9-8, to sweep a doubleheader. Mickey Stanley decided the game with a homer. In the opener, Elliott Maddox, Dick McAuliffe and Stanley each batted in two runs as the Tigers snapped the Indians' seven-game winning streak, 7-2. Norm Cash contributed a homer. Jack Heidemann accounted for the Indians' two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth innning. In the nightcap, Gutierrez singled in the first, third and fifth innings, doubled in the seventh and singled in the eighth, 10th and 12th. Tony Horton hit a grand-slam homer for the Indians in the first and collected a fifth RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Chuck Hinton and Ted Uhlaender also homered for the Indians, while the Tigers had two homers by Dick McAuliffe and one by Al Kaline, each coming with a man on base, in addition to Stanley's winning wallop. The Tigers tied the score at 8-8 in the eighth when Gates Brown doubled and Gutierrez singled.

Twins 11, Royals 2 at Kansas City (day game):
Five errors helped the Twins pile up an 11-2 victory over the Royals. Two wild throws led to the Twins' initial tally in the second inning and two more errors, together with three singles and a sacrifice fly, figured in the scoring of four runs in the fourth. Harmon Killebrew homered in the fifth and the Twins wound up with the final five runs in the ninth when the Royals tossed in their fifth error of the game. Leo Cardenas had the big blow of the inning, driving in three runs with a double.

[DH] A's 6, White Sox 3 (day game) / A's 5, White Sox 4 at Oakland (day game):
The pitching of Catfish Hunter in the first game and the batting of Sal Bando in the second game helped the Athletics to 6-3 and 5-4 victories over the White Sox, who lost a doubleheader for the sixth time this season. The A's bunched five singles and a sacrifice fly for four runs in the first inning of the opener. Reggie Jackson, who singled and scored during the outburst, batted in a run with another single in the fifth and then singled and crossed the plate in the eighth. Hunter had only one bad inning, giving up White Sox runs in the fourth on a homer by Bill Melton, a single by Ed Herrmann and a homer by Syd O'Brien. In the nightcap, Bert Campaneris led off the first inning with a homer for the A's, Steve Hovley doubled and Bando hit for the circuit. After Don Mincher drove in a run with a single in the fifth, Bando belted his second homer of the game in the eighth to supply the deciding tally. Mudcat Grant gave up a run to the White Sox in the ninth before completing the save.

Braves 6, Astros 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron smashed two homers, each with Sonny Jackson on base, to lead the Braves' attack in a 6-4 victory over the Astros. After Jackson singled and Aaron homered in the first inning, Rico Carty also hit for the circuit. Hal King singled in the fourth, advanced on an error and scored on a single by Jackson before Aaron hit his second round-tripper of the game. With his two homers, Aaron moved into fourth place on the all-time extra-base hit list with 1,191, passing Lou Gehrig. Bob Watson homered with a man on base for the Astros in the second inning.

[DH] Cardinals 3, Cubs 0 (day game) / Cardinals 3, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
Steve Carlton and Bob Gibson pitched the Cardinals to a sweep of a doubleheader with the Cubs, 3-0 and 3-2. Carlton was the winner in his encounter with Ken Holtzman, who was stopped on a personal five-game winning streak. Holtzman helped beat himself with a wild pitch that set up the Cardinals' first run in the second inning and a balk with the bases loaded that allowed another run to cross the plate in the sixth. Gibson fell behind in the second game, 2-0, but a double by Jose Cardenal and a single by Dick Allen produced a run for the Cardinals in the sixth and Gibson tied the score with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Joe Torre then smashed a homer off reliever Phil Regan for the winning run in the eighth.

[DH] Dodgers 9, Reds 3 (day game) / Reds 9, Dodgers 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
The slugging of Johnny Bench, who drove in four runs with four hits, including a homer, led the Reds to a 9-3 victory in a split of a doubleheader with the Dodgers, who won the first game by the same 9-3 score. Don Sutton, who pitched the opener for the Dodgers, became the first visiting hurler to turn in a complete-game victory at Crosley Field since September 10, 1969, when Clay Kirby of the Padres turned the trick. Jim Lefebvre led the Dodgers' attack with three hits, driving in three runs. Wes Parker, who also had three hits, accounted for two RBIs. Wayne Simpson gained his 10th victory of the season in the nightcap. Bench's homer with a man on base in the eighth inning was his 24th, tying teammate Tony Perez for the major league lead. Pete Rose and Hal McRae also rapped round-trippers in the Reds' 15-hit attack.

Expos 3, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Rich Nye, making his first start for the Expos since being recalled from Winnipeg (International), pitched a seven-hitter and beat the Pirates, 3-2. An unearned run decided Nye's duel with Bob Veale. With the score tied, 2-2, Adolfo Phillips singled in the fifth inning and moved to second on a sacrifice. Coco Laboy then grounded to Freddie Patek, who started to throw to third for an easy shot at Phillips, but the shortstop dropped the ball. John Bateman followed with a single, scoring Phillips.

Giants 7, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
Don McMahon, who worked four scoreless innings in relief to receive credit for the save, also contributed two singles as the Giants defeated the Padres, 7-2. Frank Reberger, who pitched one inning after replacing Skip Pitlock, was the winner when the Giants scored two runs in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead on two walks, a double by Ken Henderson and an infield hit by Hal Lanier. McMahon singled in the eighth when the Giants scored three runs and added his other hit in the ninth to drive in the final tally.
