Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 10, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Sandy Alomar hit two triples, a double and a single in a perfect night at the plate to lead the Angels' attack in a 10-3 victory over the Brewers. The Angels stepped off with two runs on Alomar's first triple and a homer by Roger Repoz. Alomar drove in a run with his double in the third and subsequently scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Johnson. Alomar crossed the plate for the third time after being hit a by pitch in the fifth. Tommy Harper and Max Alvis belted homers for the Brewers.
Twins 5, Royals 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Cesar Tovar tripled in the sixth inning and Jim Perry, who had doubled, scored the run that gave the Twins a 5-4 victory over the Royals. Perry got off to a shaky start, giving up all four of the Royals' runs in the first on singles by Cookie Rojas and Amos Otis, doubles by Ed Kirkpatrick and Lou Piniella and a single by Tom Matchick. The Twins came back with three runs in their half and tied the score in the third when Herman Hill, Tony Oliva and Jim Holt singled.
Senators 5, Orioles 3 at Washington (night game):
Frank Howard homered with a man on base in the first inning and Aurelio Rodriguez connected with two aboard in the eighth to bring the Senators a 5-3 victory over the Orioles. After Howard's smash, the Orioles went ahead, 3-2. Ed Brinkman opened the Nats' eighth with a single and was forced by Wayne Comer. Howard walked and was replaced on the paths by Ed Stroud, who was forced by Rick Reichardt. Rodriguez then came to the plate and hit his winning homer off Mike Cuellar.
Astros 10, Dodgers 5 at Los Angeles (night game):
Bob Watson and Joe Pepitone collected three hits apiece and drove in eight runs between them to lead the Astros to a 10-5 victory over the Dodgers. Watson had a single, double and homer, accounting for five runs, while Pepitone picked up three RBIs with a homer and two singles. Bill Sudakis rapped a round-tripper for the Dodgers.
Mets 3, Pirates 2 at New York (night game):
A two-run rally in the ninth inning brought the Mets a 3-2 victory over the Pirates, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Tom Seaver, who gained his 12th victory, allowed only five hits, but the Pirates scored a run in the fifth when Willie Stargell doubled and Gene Alley singled and took 2-1 lead in the ninth on singles by Richie Hebner, Roberto Clemente and Stargell. In the Mets' half, Ken Singleton, Art Shamsky and Dave Marshall singled to tie the score. After Ken Boswell was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Cleon Jones forced pinch-runner Al Weis at plate, but Donn Clendenon went to bat for Jerry Grote and delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in the winning run.
Cardinals 8, Cubs 6 at St. Louis (night game):
Two pinch-hitters, Vic Davalillo and Jose Cardenal, drove in two runs apiece as the Cardinals rallied in the eighth inning to defeat the Cubs, 8-6. Ernie Banks batted in five runs with two homers and a sacrifice fly in a futile effort to revive the Cubs, who lost their 11th straight game. Dick Allen, who hit a two-run homer for the Cardinals, walked to open the eighth, Joe Torre singled and Jim Beauchamp was safe on a bunt to load the bases. Davalillo then doubled to tie the score at 6-6 and Cardenal followed with a single to provide the winning margin.
