Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 3, Indians 0 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles beat the Indians for the eighth straight time this season, posting a 3-0 victory behind the eight-hit pitching of Jim Palmer. Brooks Robinson cracked three doubles and scored two of the Orioles' runs.
Red Sox 6, Senators 5 at Boston (night game):
Playing in his 300th consecutive game with the Red Sox, Carl Yastrzemski cracked a two-run homer to help beat the Senators, 6-5. Yastrzemski's smash in the seventh inning followed a double by Reggie Smith and broke a 2-2 tie. Rico Petrocelli then singled and George Scott homered. The Senators rallied for two runs in the eighth, but Sparky Lyle relieved Mike Nagy with the bases loaded and collected his 12th save.
A's 3, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Rollie Fingers, Paul Lindblad and Mudcat Grant combined to pitch the Athletics to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox. Fingers, who allowed three hits, weakened in the 94-degree heat and was lifted with one out in the seventh inning. Lindblad retired five straight men before being lifted for a pinch-batter. Grant gave up one hit in the ninth. The A's scored one run in the sixth on singles by Felipe Alou and Sal Bando around an infield out. Bert Campaneris provided the clincher in the ninth, hitting a homer after Frank Fernandez singled as a pinch-hitter for Lindblad.
Tigers 6, Yankees 5 at Detroit (night game):
A crowd of 53,863 turned out to see Denny McLain make his first start since coming off the suspended list, but the ace righthander was knocked out in the sixth inning, although the Tigers eventually defeated the Yankees in the 11th, 6-5. McLain yielded eight hits, including homers by Jerry Kenney, Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer. The blow by Murcer broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth and the Yankees then added another run when Danny Cater doubled and Curt Blefary singled to chase McLain. The Tigers took McLain off the hook with two tallies in the seventh on singles by Russ Nagelson and Dick McAuliffe, a grounder by Mickey Stanley and a sacrifice fly by Al Kaline. In the 11th, Don Wert struck out but reached first on a passed ball. Ken Szkotkiewicz was safe on Horace Clarke's third error of the game. Ike Brown sacrificed and, after McAuliffe grounded out, Stanley singled to drive in the winning run.
Angels 4, Brewers 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Fregosi hit a homer with a man on base to cap a three-run rally in the seventh inning and enable the Angels to defeat the Brewers, 4-3. Bob Burda hit his first A. L. homer in the second when the Brewers took a 2-1 lead. Greg Garrett had the rare experience of being credited with a victory without retiring a batter. Garrett, relieving Andy Messersmith with two out in the sixth, picked Tommy Harper off base to end the inning. The Angels then went ahead in the seventh. Jay Johnstone doubled and counted the tying run on a single by Bill Voss, who batted for Garrett. Sandy Alomar grounded into a double play, but Roger Repoz walked and Fregosi followed with his game-winning homer.
Twins 2, Royals 1 at Minnesota (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Rich Reese with the bases loaded in the 10th inning brought the Twins a 2-1 victory over the Royals. Rick Renick homered for the Twins in the second inning. The Royals tied the score with an unearned run in the seventh. The Twins' winning run also was tainted, coming about after George Mitterwald reached base on a throwing error by Paul Schaal. After the Twins filled the sacks, pinch-runner Jim Kaat counted on Reese's fly.
Reds 9, Braves 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Tony Perez and Pete Rose batted in seven runs between them and Tommy Helms added two others with a homer as the Reds defeated the Braves, 9-2, for their first victory in new Riverfront Stadium. Perez accounted for four runs with a double and two grounders, while Rose picked up three RBIs with a triple and a sacrifice fly. Helms' homer in the sixth inning was the Reds' first in their new park. Wayne Simpson gained his ninth straight victory and 12th of the season with a six-hitter. Hal King saved the Braves from being shut out by hitting for the circuit with a man on base in the ninth inning.
Dodgers 6, Astros 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers, playing their 1,000th game in Los Angeles since moving from Brooklyn in 1958, marked the occasion by defeating the Astros, 6-3. Billy Grabarkewitz homered with two men on base in the fifth inning to put the Dodgers ahead, 3-2, but the Astros tied the score with an unearned run in the eighth. In the Dodgers' half, Grabarkewitz doubled, stole third and counted the tie-breaking tally when Willie Davis doubled. Davis stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by Don Bryant. After Wes Parker walked, Davis beat the throw to plate on Bill Sudakis' grounder. Tom Haller followed with a single to drive in the final run.
[DH] Expos 11, Phillies 1 (night game) / Expos 4, Phillies 1 at Montreal (night game):
Bob Bailey hit two homers and a double, driving in five runs, as the Expos celebrated Dominion Day by defeating the Phillies in both ends of a twi-night doubleheader, 11-1 and 4-1. Rich Nye, who pitched the lidlifter for the Expos, gave up a run in the first inning on a walk and a triple by Larry Bowa, but allowed only three more hits the rest of the way. Bailey and Adolfo Phillips each hit a two-run homer and Coco Laboy batted in three runs with a triple and an infield out. In the nightcap the Expos scored twice in the first inning on a pass to Don Hahn, a sacrifice, a single by Rusty Staub and a double by Bailey. Staub reached base on an error in the eighth before Bailey hit his second homer of the night. Dan McGinn had last-out help from Howie Reed after the Phillies scored their run in the ninth inning.
Pirates 4, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
A homer by Richie Hebner with two men on base and two out in the eighth inning carried the Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Mets. The Pirates picked up their initial run in the fourth when Matty Alou doubled and Roberto Clemente singled, but Tommie Agee batted in two runs with a double in the home half and the Mets added another run in the seventh on singles by Ken Singleton and Bud Harrelson and a forceout of Harrelson by Art Shamsky. In the eighth, Gene Clines and Alou singled before Hebner hit his homer.
Giants 12, Padres 7 at San Francisco (day game):
Although Ollie Brown smashed a pair of three-run homers, the outfielder's slugging was of no avail as the Padres lost to the Giants, 12-7. Dick Dietz batted in four runs for the Giants with a double and a single, Ron Hunt plated three with homer and single and Al Gallagher accounted for two with a homer. The Giants had an 11-0 lead before Brown delivered a three-run blow off Mike McCormick in the seventh inning. Brown's other smash followed off Frank Reberger in the eighth.
Cubs 5, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cubs snapped their 12-game losing streak behind the pitching of Fergie Jenkins, who yielded only four hits and beat the Cardinals, 5-0. Jerry Reuss kept pace with Jenkins until the seventh inning when the Cubs erupted for four runs. Jack Hiatt walked and when Jenkins bunted, both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Following a sacrifice by Don Kessinger, Paul Popovich grounded to Julian Javier, who threw wildly to the plate as two runs scored. Billy Williams singled to drive in Popovich. Singles by Jim Hickman and Ron Santo then plated Williams with the fourth run of the frame.
