Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 6, Yankees 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Brooks Robinson hit a grand-slam homer in the 10th inning to carry the Orioles to a 6-2 victory over the Yankees. Mel Stottlemyre, who started for the Yankees, homered in the third inning, but the Orioles went ahead in the fifth before the Yankees forced the game into overtime with singles by Roy White, Thurman Munson and John Ellis in the ninth. Lindy McDaniel was on the mound in 10th when Boog Powell walked and stopped at second on a single by Frank Robinson. Elrod Hendricks grounded to Ellis, whose throw to second was dropped by Gene Michael, loading the bases and setting the scene for Brooks Robinson's belt.

Royals 4, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Ted Abernathy gained his third straight victory in relief with the Royals since coming from the Cardinals when pinch-hitter Billy Sorrell broke a tie with a run-scoring single in the eighth inning to beat the Angels, 4-3. Clyde Wright, making his first appearance since his no-hitter against the Athletics July 3, was lifted in the seventh when the Royals went ahead, 3-2, on a double by Amos Otis and single by Lou Piniella. The Angels pulled even against Abernathy in their half without getting the ball out of the infield on a walk, two safe bunts and an infield hit by Roger Repoz. In the eighth, Paul Schaal singled with one out and was on second with two away when Sorrell came through with the deciding single.

[DH] Indians 7, Senators 3 (night game) / Indians 7, Senators 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Ray Fosse and Graig Nettles batted in a total of 11 runs among them to lead the Indians' attack in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Senators, 7-3 and 7-5. Frank Howard homered in each game for the Nats. In the opener, the Indians wiped out a 3-0 deficit with a four-run outburst in the fifth inning. Eddie Leon knocked in one run with a single, Jack Heidemann hit a sacrifice fly and Fosse plated a pair with a single. Nettles iced the game in the sixth, driving in three runs with a double. In the nightcap, Leon hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning and homered with a man in base in the fourth. Fosse rapped a round-tripper in the fifth and batted in a run with a triple in the seventh before scoring himself on a sacrifice fly by Chuck Hinton. In addition to Howard's homer in the second game, the Senators also had circuit clouts by Ed Brinkman, Rick Reichardt and John Roseboro.

[DH] Red Sox 8, Tigers 4 (night game) / Tigers 4, Red Sox 3 at Detroit (night game):
A tenth-inning homer by Elliott Maddox, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter and stayed in the lineup to star at bat, gave the Tigers a 4-3 victory for a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Red Sox, who won the first game, 8-4. Reggie Smith homered to a spark three-run outburst by the Red Sox in the first inning of the lidlifter. Rico Petrocelli hit for the circuit with a man on base in the third. The Red Sox added their other runs in the ninth, two counting on a single by Smith. Jim Northrup belted two homers for the Tigers. In the nightcap, Mike Andrews and Smith homered in the third inning for the Red Sox, but the Tigers tied the score in the sixth when Maddox drew a walk as a pinch-hitter and Ike Brown and Don Wert doubled. The Red Sox regained the lead with three singles in the eighth, but back-to-back doubles by Jim Price and Maddox provided the tying tally in the Tigers' half.

[DH] Brewers 4, White Sox 3 (day game) / Brewers 1, White Sox 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
After Ted Savage homered with two out in the 12th inning to win the first game, 4-3, Lew Krausse pitched the Brewers to a 1-0 victory in the second game to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the White Sox. Mike Hershberger homered with two men on base in the third inning of the lidlifter to account for the Brewers' first three runs. Carlos May batted in a pair for the White Sox with a single in the sixth and the tying tally followed in the seventh on singles by Ken Berry and Walt Williams and an infield out by Luis Aparicio. Marty Pattin hurled the route for the Brewers and was the winner on Savage's swat off reliever Wilbur Wood. In the nightcap, Krausse triumphed in a four-hit duel with Joe Horlen, who beat himself with a wild throw to third after Mike Hegan doubled and Dave May bunted.

Twins 4, A's 2 at Oakland (night game):
Five innings of shutout relief by Stan Williams and a three-run double by Harmon Killebrew enabled the Twins to defeat the Athletics. 4-2. A walk to Joe Rudi and a homer by Sal Bando produced the A's runs off Hall in the fourth. The Twins broke loose for all their runs in the fifth. After the Twins loaded the bases and scored one run on a sacrifice fly by Jim Holt, a walk refilled the sacks and Killebrew cleared them with his two-bagger. Williams replaced Tom Hall in the A's half of the fifth and yielded only two singles the rest of the way to gain credit for his sixth straight victory.

Giants 8, Braves 5 at Atlanta (night game):
The slugging of Dick Dietz, who drove in five runs with a double and a homer, enabled the Giants to defeat the Braves, 8-5. Dietz batted in two runs with his double in the first inning. Rich Robertson homered for the Giants in the second. However, the Braves had a circuit clout by Rico Carty and held a 5-4 lead going into the seventh when the Giants exploded for four runs. Bobby Bonds was hit by a pitch, stole second and counted the tying tally on a single by Ron Hunt. After a sacrifice and an intentional pass to Willie McCovey, Dietz won the game with a three-run homer.

Cubs 10, Expos 7 at Chicago (day game):
Willie Smith, who finished the previous night's game with two hits, rapped four straight singles and drove in four runs as the Cubs defeated the Expos, 10-7. Smith singled with the bases loaded in the third inning and again in the fourth, batting in two runs on each occasion. Billy Williams homered for the Cubs, while Bob Bailey belted one for the Expos.

Reds 3, Padres 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds posted their fourth shutout in nine games since moving to new Riverfront Stadium when Gary Nolan and Clay Carroll combined to beat the Padres, 3-0. Bobby Tolan, who hit a double and a triple, batted in one of the Reds' runs and scored two others.

Dodgers 7, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Willie Davis collected four hits, including a bases-loaded triple, to lead the Dodgers to a 7-2 victory over the Astros. Davis batted in one run with a single in the fifth inning when the Dodgers counted twice to tie the score at 2-2. A walk and singles by Jim Lefebvre and Len Gabrielson added the leading run in the sixth. Davis hit his triple after three walks loaded the bases in the eighth and then scored himself on a double by Wes Parker.

Mets 4, Cardinals 3 at New York (night game):
Ron Swoboda drew a pass from Sal Campisi with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning to force in the run that gave the Mets a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. The Mets bunched singles by Bud Harrelson and Ken Singleton, a walk, a single by Donn Clendenon, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Wayne Garrett for three runs in the sixth. After the Cardinals rallied to tie the score, Jerry Grote singled in the ninth. Danny Frisella struck out, but Tommie Agee singled. After Harrelson forced Agee, the Cardinals decided to pass Singleton intentionally in a move that backfired when Campisi also walked Swoboda.

Pirates 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Roberto Clemente broke a 2-2 tie with a homer in the eighth to provide the Pirates' deciding run in a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. After Clemente's clout, singles by Manny Sanguillen and Al Oliver, together with a groundout by Richie Hebner, added an insurance tally. Sanguillen, who had three hits, together with a sacrifice fly, batted in the Pirates' first two runs of the game.
