Orioles 9, Yankees 8 at Baltimore (night game):
The Orioles hit four homers to three for Yankees, but needed a two-run single by Don Buford with the bases loaded and two out in the ninth inning to emerge with a 9-8 victory. Frank Robinson rapped two homers and Buford got one, each with the bases empty, while Boog Powell connected a with man on base for the Orioles. The Yankees had a three-run homer by Thurman Munson, a two-run belt by Curt Blefary and a solo swat by John Ellis. The Orioles were trailing, 8-6, going into the final half of the ninth and cut their deficit to one run when Robinson hit his second homer of the game. Singles by Brooks Robinson and Davey Johnson, together with a pass to Andy Etchebarren, loaded the bases with none out. Lindy McDaniel, on the mound for the Yankees, struck out pinch-hitters Terry Crowley and Elrod Hendricks, but Buford, after missing on two pitches, connected for his game-winning single.
Angels 3, Royals 2 at California (night game):
Jim Fregosi scored from third base on a grounder by Ken McMullen in the ninth inning to carry home the Angels' winning run in a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Tom Bradley, called up by the Angels from Hawaii (Pacific Coast), had a 2-0 lead going into the ninth when the Royals picked up their first run on singles by Ed Kirkpatrick, Bob Oliver and Billy Sorrell. Ken Tatum, relieving, passed two batters to force in the tying tally. In the Angels' half, Fregosi singled for his third hit, Alex Johnson beat out a bunt and Jim Spencer sacrificed. McMullen then grounded to Cookie Rojas, whose throw to the plate was too late to catch the sliding runner.
Indians 6, Senators 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Buddy Bradford hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career to cap a rally by the Indians, who scored five runs after two were out in the eighth inning to edge the Senators, 6-5. Roy Foster homered for the Indians in the first, but the Nats pulled out to a 5-1 lead, getting their last run on a round-tripper by Rick Reichardt in the eighth. In the Indians' half, a single by Foster, pass to Ray Fosse and single by Tony Horton plated one run before Chuck Hinton walked to load the bases for Bradford.
Tigers 3, Red Sox 2 at Detroit (night game):
After five consecutive losses, Mickey Lolich gained his first victory since May 29 when the Tigers beat the Red Sox, 3-2. Willie Horton and Ken Szotkiewicz homered to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead, but the Red Sox tied the score in the ninth when Rico Petrocelli doubled and Billy Conigliaro singled. In the Tigers' half, Norm Cash and Don Wert walked and, after a wild pitch, Dalton Jones drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Gates Brown then batted for Szotkiewicz and hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Elliott Maddox.
White Sox 2, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Al Downing beat himself in a duel with Tommy John by committing an error that allowed the White Sox to score two unearned runs in the eighth inning for a 2-1 victory over the Brewers. Bobby Knoop led off the stanza with a single and John sacrificed. When Tommy McCraw grounded to Tito Francona, Downing covered first but failed to handle the throw, Knoop scoring on the error. After Luis Aparicio was retired, Carlos May singled to score McCraw. The Brewers' run in the home half of the eighth also was unearned.
Twins 8, A's 6 at Oakland (night game):
Although knocked out in the ninth inning, Jim Perry gained his 13th victory when the Twins defeated the Athletics, 8-6. Tony Oliva hit a homer, three singles and a sacrifice fly, driving in four runs for the Twins, and Leo Cardenas contributed two doubles and a single. Rich Reese added a homer. The A's rallied for four runs in the ninth. Sal Bando singled for his fourth hit of the game and scored on singles by Don Mincher and Reggie Jackson. Dave Duncan then homered.
Giants 13, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Jim Ray Hart, who went hitless in the previous night's game, his first since returning from exile in the minors, tied the modern major league record by driving in six runs in one inning as the Giants walloped the Braves, 13-0. Gaylord Perry, who pitched a five-hitter, posted the first shutout to the credit of the Giants' staff this season. Hart, who hit for the cycle, doubled in the second inning and batted in a run with a single in the third before enjoying his six-RBI burst in the fifth when the Giants went on an 11-run spree. The third baseman drove in the first three runs of the explosion with a homer and then on his second time at bat in that stanza tripled with the bases loaded.
[DH] Cubs 5, Expos 1 (day game) / Expos 5, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Ron Santo and Billy Williams each homered with a man on base to power the Cubs to a 5-1 victory in the opener of a doubleheader, but four unearned runs enabled the Expos to win the nightcap, 5-4. The Cubs took a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning of the second game. Willie Smith hit a two-run homer. Johnny Callison doubled, stole third and continued home on a throwing error by Ron Brand. The Expos bounced back with three runs in the seventh. Bobby Wine singled, Brand was safe on an error and, with one out, Gary Sutherland singled to score Wine. After Adolfo Phillips grounded out, the Cubs elected to pass Bob Bailey intentionally. John Boccabella then batted for Dan McGinn and singled, driving in the tying and winning runs.
Padres 3, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
An injury that forced Jim McGlothlin to leave the game proved a break for the Padres, who jumped on reliever Ray Washburn for three runs in the third inning to defeat the Reds, 3-1, McGlothlin was hit on the right knee by a line drive. Clay Kirby, who was the Padres' winner with the aid of Ron Willis, led off the third with a single and scored on singles by Steve Huntz and Cito Gaston. When Pete Rose missed connections with Gaston's hit in right field, Huntz also crossed the plate. Ollie Brown then singled to drive in the Padres' third run.
Dodgers 6, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
Although suffering from a foot injury, Maury Wills came to the plate as a pinch-hitter and cracked a two-run double as the Dodgers rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Astros, 6-5, for their seventh straight victory. A triple by Cesar Cedeno, who batted in two runs, paced the Astros to a 4-1 lead going into the ninth. Wes Parker started the Dodgers' comeback with a one-out double, took third on Cedeno's boot of the ball and scored on a single by Willie Crawford. A pass to Bill Sudakis brought Jack DiLauro to the mound for Houston. Andy Kosco struck out, but Jim Lefebvre singled Crawford home. Sudakis took third and Lefebvre advanced to second on Cedeno's wild throw to the infield. Wills then hit his double, limping to second. Claude Osteen ran for Wills and scored what proved to be the deciding run when Billy Grabarkewitz singled off Jim Ray. Jim Wynn homered in the Astros' half of the ninth.
Mets 7, Cardinals 5 at New York (day game):
Ken Singleton smashed a three-run homer and Jerry Grote collected four straight hits to feature the Mets' 7-5 victory over the Cardinals. Nelson Briles, coming off the disabled list, was staked to a 3-0 lead by the Cardinals, but the Mets rebounded with four runs in the third. Ken Boswell doubled and scored on a single by Grote. After Tommie Agee singled and Grote was out at the plate on a grounder by Bud Harrelson, Singleton hit his homer. The Mets added the remaining runs in the fifth on run-scoring singles by Harrelson, Art Shamsky and Donn Clendenon. Carl Taylor batted in three runs for the Cards with a double and a homer.
Phillies 2, Pirates 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Breaking up a scoreless game, Deron Johnson hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Phillies a 2-0 victory over the Pirates. Don Money was on base with a walk when Johnson connected off Steve Blass, who was the loser in a four-hit duel with Rick Wise.
