Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 2, Twins 1 at California (night game):
A two-run homer by Jim Fregosi in the first inning proved the deciding blow as the Angels edged the Twins, 2-1, behind the pitching of Andy Messersmith, who yielded six hits and struck out 13. The Twins also scored in first inning, getting their run on a single by Jim Holt and double by Harmon Killebrew. In the Angels' half, Jarvis Tatum singled before Fregosi connected for the circuit off Jim Kaat. Thirteen strikeouts represented Messersmith's high for a major league game.

Red Sox 7, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
The Red Sox snapped a three-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the Indians. The Red Sox staked Gary Peters to a two-run lead in the first inning. Dick Schofield, who walked and stopped at third on a double by Reggie Smith, was thrown out at the plate when Carl Yastrzemski grounded to Jack Heidemann, but Rico Petrocelli and George Scott singled to get runs across. Yastrzemski homered in the third and batted in another run with a single in the seventh when the Red Sox added their final tallies.

Tigers 4, Orioles 2 at Detroit (night game):
Les Cain, who drove in two runs with a single, combined with Tom Timmerman on a four-hitter to pitch the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. Don Wert homered in the second inning for the Tigers' initial run. Singles by Cain and Wert and an infield out preceded Cain's decisive single in the fourth. The Tigers added a final run in the eighth on singles by Norm Cash, Wert and Ken Szotkiewicz. Cain allowed only one hit until weakening with one away in the seventh when the Orioles loaded the bases on singles by Davey Johnson and Andy Etchebarren and a pass to Bobby Grich. One run scored on Curt Motton's forceout of Grich and another on a single by Don Buford before Timmerman took over and checked the rally.

[DH] Royals 8, White Sox 6 (day game) / Royals 2, White Sox 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The hitting of Pat Kelly and Ed Kirkpatrick, who drove in seven of Kansas City's total of 10 runs, led the Royals to an 8-6 and 2-0 sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the White Sox. The Royals started their scoring with five runs in the third inning of the lidlifter, three counting on a homer by Kelly and one on a double by Kirkpatrick. Kelly added his fourth RBI of the game with a single in fourth and Kirkpatrick homered in the seventh. Jim Rooker pitched the Royals' shutout in the nightcap and got the only run that he needed when Kirkpatrick hit for the circuit in the fourth. However, Rooker helped clinch his verdict, hitting a sacrifice fly in the fifth after a triple by Tom Matchick.

Brewers 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Bobby Bolin not only pitched effectively, scattering eight hits, but drove in one of the Brewers' runs with a single in a 2-1 victory over the Athletics. Jerry McNertney singled in the second inning and, after a pass to Ted Kubiak, Bolin hit his scoring single. The Brewers added the other run in the sixth on singles by Bob Burda and McNertney around an infield out. The Athletics counted in the eighth when Bert Campaneris doubled, stole third and continued home after a wide throw by McNertney. However, the run became earned when Rick Monday followed with a single.

Senators 2, Yankees 1 at Washington (night game):
With the backing of a two-run homer by Frank Howard, Dick Bosman pitched the Senators to a 2-1 victory over the Yankees. Ed Brinkman beat out a bunt in the third inning and Howard hit his homer to wreck the debut of Steve Kline, a 22-year-old righthander who came up from Syracuse (International). Bosman, who gave up four hits, yielded the Yankees' run in the fourth on a triple by Jerry Kenney and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer.

[DH] Braves 11, Reds 9 (night game) / Reds 3, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
A freak homer by Pat Corrales on a rare fielding blunder by Hank Aaron enabled the Reds to win the second game of a twi-night doubleheader, 3-1, after the Braves had slugged their way to an 11-9 victory in the first game. Orlando Cepeda batted in four runs with two homers, Clete Boyer accounted for three RBIs with a homer and an infield out and Aaron sent in two tallies with a single to lead the Braves' attack in the lidlifter. The Reds had homers by Jim Merritt, Bernie Carbo and Woody Woodward. The blow by Woodward in the eighth inning was the first of his eight-year career in the majors. In the nightcap, George Stone and Tony Cloninger were locked in a scoreless duel until the ninth inning when Dave Concepcion was safe on a throwing error by Sonny Jackson with two out. Corrales followed with a high fly near the fence in right field. Aaron appeared set for the catch, but the ball popped out of his glove, bounced off his bare hand and went over the fence for a homer. The Reds then added a run when Woodward, batting for Cloninger, walked, Pete Rose singled for his fifth straight hit of the game and Bobby Tolan singled. Jimmie Hall homered off Clay Carroll in the last of the ninth for the Braves' run.

Cubs 2, Phillies 0 at Chicago (day game):
Fergie Jenkins scattered five singles and pitched the Cubs to a 2-0 victory over the Phillies. The Cubs also were held to five hits, but bunched three off Grant Jackson for their runs in the second inning. Jim Hickman led off with a single and counted on a double by Ron Santo. After a sacrifice by Cleo James, Johnny Callison singled to score Santo.

Giants 8, Astros 5 at Houston (night game):
Ron Hunt had a perfect night at the the plate with four hits and Willie Mays rapped a pair of singles, bringing his career total to 2,994, as the Giants defeated the Astros, 8-5. Mays batted in one run with a single in the second and added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Hunt drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth and Willie McCovey accounted for two more with a double in the ninth.

Expos 9, Mets 7 at New York (night game):
The Mets' seven-game winning streak was snapped with a 9-7 loss to the Expos. Coco Laboy batted in four runs for the Expos with two doubles and a single. Jerry Koosman drew the defeat, but the Expos scored their deciding pair off Ron Taylor in the ninth inning with the help of a passed ball on a third strike, a single by Ron Fairly, a squeeze bunt and two walks. Carl Morton, the first pitcher to beat the Mets three times this season, was chased in the eighth inning, but Claude Raymond came in to save the game.

Dodgers 9, Padres 7 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres hit four homers in the ninth inning, but their power display came too late to prevent a 9-7 loss to the Dodgers. Wes Parker hit two doubles and a triple for the Dodgers, driving in three runs and scoring two. In the Padres' ninth Ivan Murrell, Ed Spiezio and Dave Campbell connected for bases-empty blows off Bill Singer. After Steve Huntz walked with two out, Jose Pena relieved and was tagged for a homer by Cito Gaston before Nate Colbert struck out to end the game. The major league record for most circuit clouts in one inning is five.

Pirates 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Sparked by Al Oliver, who hit a homer, the Pirates erupted for four runs in the ninth inning and beat the Cardinals, 6-2, to snap Bob Gibson's personal 10-game winning streak. Richie Hebner homered for the Pirates in the eighth to break a 1-1 tie, but the Cardinals knotted the count again in their half on a double by Carl Taylor and single by Joe Torre. After Oliver's homer in the ninth, Willie Stargell singled and Manny Sanguillen beat out a bunt. Gene Alley rolled into a double play, erasing Sanguillen. The Cards then passed Bill Mazeroski in order to get at Dave Giusti, pitching in relief of Jim Nelson, but their former teammate surprised them by lashing a two-run triple.
