Hendricks' grand-slam came off Barry Moore after a double by Frank Robinson and passes to Brooks Robinson and Davey Johnson. Mike Cuellar, who gained his fifth straight victory, was troubled mainly by Bill Melton, who batted in three runs for the White Sox with a single, sacrifice fly and homer.
Royals 3, Tigers 0 at Kansas City (night game):

Howard homered for the other run in the sixth.
[DH] Braves 3, Cubs 1 (night game) / Braves 5, Cubs 0 at Atlanta (night game):
A homer by Tommie Aaron and the pitching of Don Cardwell featured the Braves' sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Cubs, 3-1 and 5-0, with the second game being stopped by rain with two out in the top half of the sixth inning. In the ninth inning of the opener, with the score tied, 1-1, Hank Aaron drew a two-out walk and Tommie Aaron, stepping into the slugging spotlight usually occupied by his more famous brother, smashed a homer to win the game for the Braves. Cardwell, making his first appearance since being acquired from the Mets, allowed only three hits in the rain-shortened nightcap. The Braves scored two runs off Joe Decker in the first inning when Glenn Beckert, playing center field for the first time in his career, misjudged a line drive by Mike Lum, allowing the ball to fall for a double. Tony Gonzalez produced the Braves' other runs, hitting a homer with two men on base in the second.
Astros 5, Pirates 4 at Houston (night game):
After going hitless in five previous appearances, Bob Watson drove in a run with a single in the 12th inning to give the Astros a 5-4 vcitory over the Pirates. Roberto Clemente and Bob Robertson homered for the Pirates, while Denis Menke hit one for the Astros. Jesus Alou singled in the 12th, advanced on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on Watson's single.

Padres 3, Expos 1 at San Diego (night game):
Pat Dobson ended his personal five-game losing streak and Ollie Brown hit safely in his 12th straight game, smashing a double and a homer, as the Padres defeated the Expos, 3-1. Singles by Steve Huntz and Al Ferrara, around an infield out, produced the Padres' initial run in the fourth inning. Brown hit his double in the sixth and scored on a single by Nate Colbert. Brown's homer followed in the eighth. The Expos evaded a shutout with a run in the ninth on a single by Jim Gosger, double by Coco Laboy and sacrifice fly by Jim Fairey.
Giants 7, Mets 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Two walks with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, when the Giants scored four runs, helped provide a 7-4 victory over the Mets. Wayne Garrett homered as the Mets built up a 4-2 lead behind Rich Folkers, who made his first major league start. Dick Dietz, who homered for the Giants in the fourth, led off the sixth with a double and Al Gallagher walked. Hal Lanier singled to drive in Dietz and Bob Heise hit a pinch-double, plating Gallagher to tie the score. Danny Frisella, relieving, passed Bobby Bonds intentionally to load the bases and then forced in two runs by walking Frank Johnson and Jim Ray Hunt.
[DH] Reds 4, Cardinals 3 (night game) / Reds 4, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
After sending only 27 men to bat in the first nine innings, the Reds exploded with a grand-slam homer by May in the 10th and beat the Cardinals, 4-0, to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader. Lee May also had a hand in the Reds' 4-3 victory in the opener, driving in a run with a double in the eighth inning when the Cincy crew tied the score at 3-3. Gary Nolan helped win his own game, rapping a single in the ninth and crossing the plate on singles by Pete Rose and Bobby Tolan. Chuck Taylor, who pitched the first nine innings of the nightcap for the Cardinals, allowed three hits, but double plays wiped out two runners and the third was thrown out trying to steal. Taylor was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth and Bob Chlupsa, taking over in the 10th, was the loser on May's slam. Rose singled, Tolan sacrificed, Tony Perez drew an intentional pass and Bernie Carbo singled to set the stage for the jackpot wallop.
