Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 4, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
The Angels rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Red Sox, 4-1. Jay Johnstone homered for the Angels in the fourth and the Red Sox picked up their run in the same stanza on a single by Tony Conigliaro, double by Rico Petrocelli and sacrifice fly by Don Pavletich. Jarvis Tatum doubled for the Angels in the ninth and scored the tie-breaking tally on a two-bagger by pinch-hitter Billy Cowan. An intentional walk to Alex Johnson, single by Jim Spencer and double by Ken McMullen added extra runs.

Indians 5, White Sox 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Sam McDowell went over the 200 mark in strikeouts for the sixth straight season and gained his seventh straight victory and 15th of the year as the Indians defeated the White Sox, 5-2. McDowell fanned nine, bringing his total to 206. Eddie Leon started the Indians' scoring with a homer in the third, but the White Sox went ahead with a two-run single by Ken Berry in the fourth. Jack Heidemann singled in the fifth and Vada Pinson homered to put McDowell ahead to stay.

Orioles 5, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Orioles continued their domination of the Royals with a 5-4 victory, beating the expansion club for the 20th straight time over two seasons. The Royals' pitching staff had not allowed a homer for 135 innings until Frank Robinson broke that string with a two-run shot in the third to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead. A walk to Amos Otis with the bases loaded in the home half of the fourth and doubles by Bob Oliver and Billy Sorrell in the fifth tied the score. The Orioles went ahead with a walk to Jim Palmer, single by Merv Rettenmund and sacrifice fly by Frank Robinson in the seventh and added the deciding run in the eighth when Brooks Robinson singled and Bobby Grich tripled.

Twins 2, Tigers 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Bert Blyeven allowed only four hits and pitched the Twins to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers with the aid of batterymate George Mitterwald, who smashed a homer for the winning run in the seventh inning. Jim Northrup homered for the Tigers in the sixth but the outfielder's error enabled the Twins to tie the score in their half. Rich Reese singled, reached third when Northrup let the ball get away in right field and beat the throw home on a grounder by Harmon Killebrew.

Cubs 1, Reds 0 at Chicago (day game):
Milt Pappas became the first pitcher to shut out the Reds this season when the righthander yielded only four hits as the Cubs gained a 1-0 victory. An unearned run pinned the loss on Clay Carroll, who took the mound in relief of Jim McGlothlin in the eighth inning. Carroll started off by walking both Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert. Billy Williams grounded to Helms, whose throw to Woody Woodward forced Beckert, but Woodward's wild relay to first base allowed Kessinger to score.

Pirates 6, Braves 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Dave Cash capped a three-run rally in the eighth inning as the Pirates came from behind to defeat the Braves, 6-5. Triples by Manny Sanguillen and Cash helped the Pirates take a 3-0 lead in the second inning, but the Braves exploded for five runs in the sixth. A single by Bob Tillman drove in a pair of go-ahead tallies. Richie Hebner started the Pirates' rally in the eighth with a single, took second on an error by Hank Aaron and scored on a single by Al Oliver. A pinch-double by Roberto Clemente and pass to Sanguillen loaded the bases. Bob Robertson was hit by a pitch, forcing in the tying run, and Cash followed with his fly.

Astros 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A homer by Johnny Edwards, breaking a tie in fifth inning, enabled Jack Billingham to pitch the Astros to a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals in a six-hit duel with Bob Gibson. The Cardinals struck for their runs in the first inning on singles by Lou Brock and Leron Lee, a pass to Dick Allen, single by Joe Torre and infield out by Jose Cardenal. The Astros picked up a matching pair in the second. Denis Menke singled, Doug Rader doubled and both crossed the plate on a single by Cesar Cedeno.
