Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, White Sox 2 at Baltimore (night game):
The three-hit pitching of Mike Cuellar and a two-run single by Bobby Grich enabled the Orioles to defeat the White Sox, 4-2. The Orioles struck for three of their runs in the fourth inning. A double by Merv Rettenmund and single by Brooks Robinson produced the first marker. After two walks loaded the bases, Grich rapped his two-run single. Both runs off Cuellar were unearned on a wild throw by Brooks Robinson in the fifth before the Orioles added their last tally on singles by Boog Powell and Terry Crowley around a pass to Brooks Robinson.

Yankees 6, Angels 5 at California (night game):
Making his debut in a Yankee uniform, Mike McCormick received credit for his first A. L. victory with the support of catcher Thurman Munson, who cracked four hits, including a homer, to help beat the Angels, 6-5. Tom Egan, the Angels' catcher, was charged with five passed balls, setting a league record. Egan also dropped a throw to the plate for an error in the sixth inning when the Yankees scored what proved to be the winning run. McCormick, who was obtained from the Giants, was chased in the seventh, but Lindy McDaniel saved his victory.

Twins 5, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
The Twins snapped Sam McDowell's seven game winning streak by scoring three runs after two were out in the seventh inning to defeat the Indians, 5-2. Brant Alyea homered for the Twins in the fourth, but the Indians held a 2-1 lead going into the seventh. Danny Thompson led off with a single and was forced by Cesar Tovar. After Frank Quilici popped up, Rick Renick doubled to tie the score and Harmon Killebrew homered to send the Twins ahead.

Royals 7, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
Bob Oliver hit his second two-run homer of the game, connecting with two out in the ninth inning, to lift the Royals to a 7-6 victory over the Tigers. A single by Gates Brown and circuit clout by Norm Cash gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead in the eighth before the Royals came back to win when Lou Piniella singled and Oliver followed with his homer.

Brewers 5, Senators 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Al Downing pitched a two-hitter and gained his first victory in a Milwaukee uniform when the Brewers defeated the Senators, 5-1. The Nats' run in the sixth inning came without a hit on a pass to Tom Grieve, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Frank Howard. Tommy Harper tied the score with a homer the in Brewers' half. Ted Savage was safe on an error by Howard in the seventh, Dave May walked and, after a forceout by Roberto Pena, Phil Roof and Ted Kubiak each batted in a run with a single. Pena singled with the bases loaded to produce the final pair in the eighth.

A's 6, Red Sox 4 at Oakland (night game):
With homers accounting for all but one of the game's total of 10 runs, the Athletics beat the Red Sox, 6-4, for their seventh straight victory. Vicente Romo, who started for Red Sox, suffered his first defeat since August 31, 1969, after winning nine games in a row, six of them this season. Rico Petrocelli homered for the Red Sox after a walk to Mike Andrews and a single by Reggie Smith in the third inning. Circuit clouts by Don Mincher and Reggie Jackson tied the score in the fourth, Mincher's blow coming with Sal Bando on base, but the Red Sox regained the lead with a swat by Smith in the fifth. The Athletics bounced back in their half when Felipe Alou singled and Bando homered. The last run, in the eighth, counted on a walk to Bando, a sacrifice and a throwing error by Carl Yastrzemski.

Cardinals 6, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
The Cardinals, who defeated the Reds, 16-9, in the previous night's game before coming to Atlanta, posted back-to-back victories for the first time since June 28-29 when Bob Gibson beat the Braves, 6-4. Vic Davalillo led the Cardinals at bat, driving in three runs with a pair of singles.

Astros 10, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
A three-run homer by Jim Wynn and two-run drives by Johnny Edwards and Doug Rader powered the Astros to a 10-4 victory over the Cubs. Wynn's smash in the first inning followed a single by Jesus Alou and a pass to Joe Morgan. Edwards hammered his homer after a single by Cesar Cedeno in the sixth. The Cubs came back with all their runs in the home half on a homer by Al Spangler, two singles and a circuit clout by Ron Santo. The Astros wrapped up the victory with four runs in the ninth, two counting on Rader's rap and another scoring on a single by Edwards for his third RBI.

Pirates 4, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The clutch relief pitching of Dave Giusti, who took over with the bases loaded and none out in the ninth inning, enabled the Pirates to defeat the Reds, 4-3. Bill Mazeroski homered with two men on base in the second and the Pirates added a run on doubles by Richie Hebner and Al Oliver in the fifth to hold a 4-2 lead going into the Reds' final turn at bat. Jimmy Stewart touched off the Cincy threat with a single and, after Joe Gibbon replaced Bruce Dal Canton, singles by Bobby Tolan and Pete Rose loaded the bases. Giusti gave up a sacrifice fly by Tony Perez, passed Johnny Bench intentionally, struck out Bernie Carbo and retired Lee May on a fly to save the game.

Expos 5, Padres 4 at Montreal (night game):
Two homers by Fairly, who batted in four runs, including tie-breaking tally in eighth inning, provided Expos with 5-4 victory over Padres. Expos scored four times in third on singles by Wine and Renko, error and Fairly's first homer of game. Ferrara batted in two runs for Padres with single and homer.

Mets 12, Giants 2 at New York (night game):
Donn Clendenon set a Mets' club record by driving in seven runs to highlight a 12-2 rout of the Giants. The former mark of six RBIs in a game was set by Frank Thomas in 1962 and tied by Jerry Buchek in 1967. Clendenon batted in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, homered with two men on base in the third and then connected again with two aboard in the fourth. The Mets' 17-hit attack also included a solo swat by Ron Swoboda for the last run in the eighth. Jim McAndrew pitched a five-hitter for the Mets, but his bid for a shutout was spoiled in the sixth when Mike Davison and Bobby Bonds walked and Ron Hunt drove them home with a double.

Dodgers 6, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Maury Wills and Manny Mota had three hits apiece and Billy Grabarkewitz contributed a homer as the Dodgers beat the Phillies, 6-2. A single by Wills, safe bunt by Mota, double by Wes Parker and infield out by Jim Lefebvre gave the Dodgers two runs in the first inning. After the Phillies came back to tie the score, the Dodgers broke away with two runs in the fifth. A double by Willie Crawford and single by Wills produced the first run. Singles by Mota and Willie Davis loaded the bases and Parker added another tally with a sacrifice fly. A triple by Tom Haller led to run in the sixth and Grabarkewitz homered in the eighth.
