Today's scores and summaries:
White Sox 2, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Bill Melton, who struck out in 10 straight official times at bat before flying out in the ninth inning of the previous night's game, rapped a single and a double and scored twice to bring the White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Orioles. Boog Powell homered for the Orioles' run in the fourth inning. Melton doubled in the seventh and counted on a single by Duane Josephson. Melton singled in the ninth, moved to third on a single by Josephson and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Bob Spence.
Yankees 8, Angels 3 at California (night game):
The first three batters in the Yankees' lineup -- Horace Clarke, Thurman Munson and Roy White -- collected nine hits among them and led the way to an 8-3 victory over the Angels. Steve Kline, who started for the Yankees, was chased in the fourth when the Angels scored their three runs on five straight hits, but three Yankee relievers allowed only one hit the rest of the way.
Indians 9, Twins 8 at Cleveland (night game):
The Indians built up a 9-1 lead with the aid of a grand-slam homer by Vada Pinson and then held on to beat the Twins, 9-8. Dean Chance batted in a run with a single and Duke Sims walked with the bases loaded to give the Indians a 2-1 lead in the second inning. With two men on base in the third and a count of two balls on Eddie Leon, Pete Hamm made his debut on the mound for the Twins and finished walking Leon. The pass was charged to Dave Boswell. Chance beat out a bunt, scoring Graig Nettles, and Pinson followed with his jackpot wallop. Nettles homered in the fourth and Buddy Bradford doubled to drive in what proved to be the winning run in the fifth. Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva hit homers for the Twins.
Tigers 10, Royals 3 at Detroit (night game):
Taking advantage of an error by Lou Piniella with two out in the fifth inning, the Tigers scored six unearned runs and defeated the Royals, 10-3. When Piniella dropped a fly by Dick McAuliffe, two runs scored. Bill Freehan followed with a triple for two more and Don Wert marked his 32nd birthday with a homer to cap the gift stanza. Mickey Stanley hit two homers for the Tigers.
Senators 4, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Frank Howard homered with a man on base in the fifth inning and Mike Epstein added a solo swat in the eighth to propel the Senators to a 4-2 victory over the Brewers. After Epstein's smash, Rick Reichardt batted in a run with a pinch-single to insure the defeat of Lew Krausse, who was stopped on a personal six-game winning streak. Dave May homered for the Brewers.
Red Sox 4, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Ray Culp yielded only five hits, struck out 12 and pitched the Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the Athletics, who were halted on a seven-game winning streak. George Thomas batted in three runs for the Red Sox with a double and a single. Bert Campaneris homered in the sixth inning for the A's tally.
Braves 9, Cardinals 7 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron batted in five runs with two homers to lead the Braves to a 9-7 victory over the Cardinals. Hal King also homered for the Braves, while the Cardinals had circuit clouts by Julian Javier, Dick Allen and Joe Hague. Aaron homered with a man on base in the third when the Braves scored four times to take a 4-1 lead. The Cardinals, however, went ahead, 6-4, before the Braves exploded for five runs in the seventh. King led off with his homer. Clete Boyer singled and, after two out, scored the tying run on an infield hit by Felix Millan. Tony Gonzalez then walked and Aaron followed with his second homer for the winning smash.
Cubs 9, Astros 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs hit three homers in the first inning and scored six runs to escort Ken Holtzman to a 9-2 victory over the Astros. Billy Williams started the bombardment after a single by Glenn Beckert. Ron Santo singled and crossed the plate on a triple by Willie Smith before Johnny Callison and Randy Hundley hit homers in succession. Doug Rader rapped a round-tripper for the Astros.
Reds 4, Pirates 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Double plays in the eighth and ninth innings enabled Wayne Granger to receive credit for his 24th save of the season as the Reds edged the Pirates, 4-3. Gary Nolan, who was the winner, fell behind, 3-0, before the Reds rallied for two runs in the fifth. Dave Concepcion singled, Nolan sacrificed and Pete Rose singled for the first tally. After taking third on a single by Bobby Tolan, Rose scored on sacrifice fly by Tony Perez. The Reds then went ahead in the sixth on a single by Tommy Helms, a pass to Concepcion, sacrifice bunt by Ty Cline and two-run single by Rose.
Expos 4, Padres 3 at Montreal (night game):
Rusty Staub snapped out of an 0-for-12 slump with a tie-breaking homer in the fifth inning to enable the Expos to defeat the Padres, 4-3. The Expos took a 3-0 lead before the Padres came back with two runs in the fourth on a walk, a triple by Al Ferrara and an infield out. Doubles by Clay Kirby and Dave Campbell tied the score in the fifth. Staub not only produced the winning run with his homer but also saved the game, making a spectacular catch of a line drive by Ollie Brown in the sixth and throwing to first to double Ferrara off base. Carl Morton, who pitched his 14th victory, set an Expos' club record by winning his fifth game in a row.
Giants 4, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
Bobby Bonds belted two homers and batted in three runs to pace the Giants to a 4-2 victory over the Mets. Bonds also collected two singles. The Mets loaded the bases in the first inning but scored only one run on a grounder by Donn Clendenon, who then accounted for their second tally with a homer in the third. Bonds hit for the circuit in the fifth and put the Giants ahead with his second round-tripper in the seventh after Frank Johnson reached base with a single. A walk, wild pitch and double by Ken Henderson added an insurance marker.
