Today's scores and summaries:
Indians 3, Twins 2 at Cleveland (night game):
After 7 2/3 hitless innings, Steve Hargan settled for a three-hitter in pitching the Indians to a 3-2 victory over the Twins. George Mitterwald singled to spoil Hargan's no-hit bid. After another single by Leo Cardenas, the runners moved up on a wild pitch. Hargan walked Charlie Manuel intentionally to load the bases and gave up the Twins' runs on a single by Brant Alyea before Cesar Tovar hit into a forceout to end the inning. The Indians counted twice in the third on singles by Eddie Leon and Larry Brown, a wild throw by Jim Perry on a bunt by Hargan, and a single by Roy Foster. Vada Pinson provided the winning run with a homer in the seventh.
Royals 3, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
A single by Bob Oliver in 10th inning, scoring Cookie Rojas from second base, gave the Royals a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. Norm Cash put the Tigers ahead, 2-1, with a two-run homer in the fourth, but the Royals tied the score in seventh on two walks and a single by Pat Kelly. Rojas singled in the 10th. After a sacrifice by Amos Otis and an intentional pass to Lou Piniella, Oliver rapped his winning single.
Brewers 6, Senators 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Danny Walton, returning to the lineup after being benched for eight games, hit a single and double to spark the Brewers to a 6-2 victory over the Senators. Walton singled in the fifth inning for the first hit off George Brunet and, after a walk and a sacrifice, the Brewers scored two runs on an infield out by Dave May and a single by Marty Pattin. Walton's double was good for an RBI when the Brewers added a pair in the sixth. Two more runs scored in the seventh before the Senators posted their pair in the eighth on four singles and a sacrifice fly by Frank Howard.
A's 2, Red Sox 1 at Oakland (night game):
Mudcat Grant, who gained his 18th save of season, preserved a victory for Catfish Hunter for eighth time as the Athletics nipped the Red Sox, 2-1. Bert Campaneris singled in the first inning, stole two bases and scored the A's initial run on a sacrifice fly by Felipe Alou. Hunter doubled in the third and crossed the plate on a double by Rick Monday to plate what proved to be the deciding run for his 15th victory. The Red Sox notched their tally in the seventh on a walk and singles by Mike Andrews and Reggie Smith. The loss went to Cal Koonce, who made his first start since September 3, 1968.
Cardinals 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Two homers by Lou Brock and one by Joe Torre enabled the Cardinals to defeat the Braves, 4-2. Brock led off the first inning with a circuit clout and the Cardinals added a run in the second on a double by Jose Cardenal and a single by Mike Shannon. Torre homered in the fourth and Brock hit his second round-tripper of the game in the eighth. The Braves chased Jerry Reuss in the ninth when Orlando Cepeda singled and Clete Boyer homered. Chuck Taylor retired the next two batters before Mike Lum walked and Rico Carty doubled, but Felix Millan grounded out to end the game.
Cubs 6, Astros 3 at Chicago (day game):
Billy Williams batted in his 95th and 96th runs, one more than his total for the entire 1969 season, to mark the Cubs' 6-3 victory over the Astros. The Cubs picked up a run in the first inning and added another on a homer by Johnny Callison in the second before sewing up the verdict with four in the fourth. After Callison and Randy Hundley singled, walks to Don Kessinger and Glenn Beckert forced in the first marker. Williams followed with a two-run single and the final tally counted on a wild pitch. Denis Menke and Cesar Cedeno homered for the Astros.
Reds 8, Pirates 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench belted his 35th homer and Tony Perez poked his 31st among the Reds' 14 hits in an 8-4 victory over the Pirates. Perez batted in a run with a single in the first inning before Bench connected for the circuit. Pat Corrales drove in another run with a double. The Reds added three more tallies in the second and wound up their scoring with a homer by Perez in the seventh. Tony Cloninger was the winner with the help of Don Gullett, who allowed only two hits in the last 3 2/3 innings.
Dodgers 7, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
Jeff Torborg drove in three runs with his first homer since 1967 and added an RBI with a single to lead the Dodgers to a 7-3 victory over the Expos. Ted Sizemore and Bill Russell singled ahead of the catcher's clout in the fourth inning and the Dodgers went on to add another run on a double by Maury Wills and single by Willie Davis. Torborg hit his run-scoring single in the seventh. Marv Staehle doubled for two of the Expos' tallies.
