Orioles 10, Royals 8 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles posted a 10-8 victory to complete the sweep of their 12-game season series with the Royals and extend their domination of the expansion club to 23 straight games over two seasons. The Orioles knocked out Jim Rooker before he could retire a batter and piled up five runs in the first inning. After Merv Rettenmund and Paul Blair singled and Frank Robinson walked to load the bases, Brooks Robinson batted in two runs with a single and Curt Motton drove in two more with a triple. Dave Johnson doubled off reliever Al Fitzmorris to plate a fifth run. Motton homered with two men on base in the fourth before Andy Etchebarren provided the Orioles' winning margin with a two-run single in the sixth. Amos Otis hit a homer for the Royals. Mike Cuellar, who started for the Orioles, was chased in the sixth inning but received credit for his 15th victory.

Angels 8, Red Sox 3 at California (day game):
The Angels broke out of a scoring slump and ended their five-game losing streak by defeating the Red Sox. 8-3. When the Angels were blanked in the first, it marked their 24th straight scoreless inning against Red Sox pitching. However, in the second, Alex Johnson and Jim Spencer singled and when catcher Jerry Moses threw wildly on a pickoff attempt, Johnson scored. Ken McMullen followed with triple for another run and crossed the plate himself on a single by Sandy Alomar. Jim Fregosi and McMullen then hit homers to highlight a five-run outburst in the sixth. Tom Bradley gained his first major league victory but was removed in ninth after Tony Conigliaro homered with two men on base for the Red Sox.

[DH] Indians 4, White Sox 2 (day game) / White Sox 8, Indians 7 at Chicago (day game):
Bill Melton homered with a man on base and two out in the ninth inning to lift the White Sox to an 8-7 victory in a split of a doubleheader with the Indians, who won the first game, 4-2. In the lidlifter, Ed Herrmann homered for the White Sox and Duke Sims for the Indians to effect a 1-1 tie. The Indians pulled away with two runs in the sixth. Roy Foster doubled and scored on a single by Graig Nettles. After Tony Horton forced Nettles, singles by Ted Uhlaender and Eddie Leon added the deciding run. In the nightcap, Syd O'Brien singled before Melton broke up the game with his homer.

Twins 4, Tigers 3 at Detroit (day game):
Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew powered the Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Tigers to spoil Al Kaline Day for the crowd of 40,113. The Tigers' veteran outfielder singled in his first time at bat but went hitless in his next three trips. Oliva started the Twins' scoring with a homer in the first inning. Norm Cash walked and Don Wert doubled for a Tiger run in the second, but Oliva singled in the fourth and Killebrew followed with a titanic homer into the upper-deck bleachers in center field. Oliva singled for his third hit of the game to drive in another run in the fifth. The Tigers rallied in the ninth and scored two unearned runs on an error with the bases loaded before Stan Williams saved the game by retiring Mickey Stanley.

Brewers 9, Yankees 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers broke a tie with two runs in the seventh inning and added two more on a homer by Ted Savage in the eighth to gain a 9-5 victory over the Yankees, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. In the seventh, Savage walked, Danny Walton was hit by a pitch and Roberto Pena beat out a bunt to load the bases. Phil Roof singled for the tie-breaking tally and another run scored on an infield out by Ted Kubiak.

[DH] Senators 6, A's 2 (day game) / A's 1, Senators 0 at Oakland (day game):
The hitting of Ed Stroud and Aurelio Rodriguez paced the Senators to a 6-2 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Athletics came back to win the second game, 1-0, on a homer by Don Mincher with two out in ninth inning. In the lidlifter, Stroud reached base four times on a triple, two singles and a walk and scored three runs. Rodriguez batted in two tallies with a double in the eighth inning. Rick Monday homered for the Athletics. In the nightcap, after both starters were removed, Mudcat Grant was the winner when Mincher homered for the only hit allowed by loser Horacio Pina.

Pirates 10, Braves 7 at Atlanta (day game):
The slugging of Bob Robertson and Johnny Jeter, who batted in 10 runs between them, powered the Pirates to a 10-7 victory over the Braves and lifted them into first place in the Eastern division ahead of the Mets. Robertson drove in six runs with two homers and a double, while Jeter accounted for the other four with a homer and single. The Braves had homers by Hank Aaron, Jimmie Hall and Mike Lum. Aaron also hit a single and batted in four runs.

Reds 4, Cubs 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
After tying score three different times, the Reds finally defeated the Cubs, 4-3, on a two-out single by Bobby Tolan in the 11th inning. Lee May homered in the seventh to forge a 1-1 deadlock. The Cubs went ahead again in the eighth when Glenn Beckert tripled and Ron Santo singled, but the Reds knotted the count in the ninth on a grounder by Ty Cline with the bases loaded. Billy Williams homered for the Cubs in the 10th and the Reds once more pulled even when pinch-hitter Angel Bravo singled to score Tony Perez. In the 11th, with two out, Cline beat out an infield hit and took second on a balk by Jim Colborn. After an intentional pass to Pete Rose, Tolan ended the game with his single.

Cardinals 3, Astros 2 at Houston (day game):
Bob Gibson batted in what proved to be the winning run with a single in the ninth inning while the pitching the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Astros. The Cardinals bunched four hits for two runs in the fourth. After Johnny Edwards homered for the Astros in the eighth, Mike Shannon singled in the ninth, Dal Maxvill walked and Gibson looped a single to right field. The Astros threatened in the ninth with singles by Jesus Alou and Joe Morgan, but scored only one run when Jim Wynn grounded into a double play.

Dodgers 6, Expos 3 at Montreal (day game):
Back-to-back homers by Tom Haller and Bill Sudakis ignited a five-run outburst as the Dodgers rallied in the ninth inning to defeat the Expos, 6-3. After homers tied the score at 3-3, Willie Crawford singled, Billy Grabarkewitz walked and Manny Mota was safe on an error by Bobby Wine to load the bases. Willie Davis singled, driving in two runs, to break the tie and Wes Parker added an extra run with another single.

[DH] Padres 3, Mets 0 (day game) / Padres 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
The Padres knocked the Mets out of first place in the Eastern division behind the Pirates by sweeping a doubleheader, 3-0 and 4-2. Danny Coombs and Tom Dukes combined to pitch a shutout, holding the Mets to four hits, all off Coombs in the first 6 2/3 innings. Dukes retired the last seven straight batters. The Padres were held to one hit by Jim McAndrew until breaking through for two runs in the seventh. Cito Gaston walked, stole second and scored on a single by Ollie Brown. After another single by Ramon Webster, Ed Spiezio hit a sacrifice fly. Singles by Gaston and Brown, around a sacrifice, added a run in the ninth. In the nightcap, the Mets scored on homers by Donn Clendenon in the sixth inning and Ron Swoboda in the seventh. Nate Colbert shattered the 2-2 tie with a circuit clout in the eighth and, one out later, Spiezio also hit a homer to clinch the Padres' sweep.

Phillies 7, Giants 6 at Philadelphia (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Tony Taylor in the ninth inning carried the Phillies to a 7-6 victory over the Giants. Larry Hisle doubled to start the Phillies' rally, Doc Edwards singled and Terry Harmon walked to load the bases. Mike Davison relieved and was the victim of Taylor's jackpot wallop.
