Royals 7, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
While Bob Johnson yielded only four singles, the Royals piled up 15 hits and beat the White Sox, 7-2. Lou Piniella, who had four hits, batted in one run with a single and Bob Oliver accounted for three with a homer in the seventh inning.
Senators 4, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Joe Grzenda, relieving Dick Bosman with two men on base and none out in the seventh inning, choked off a Tigers' threat and saved the Senators' 4-0 victory. The Senators scored all their runs in the third. A safe bunt by Wayne Comer and singles by Ed Brinkman, Frank Howard and Aurelio Rodriguez produced the first two tallies. Afer Howard and Rodriguez moved up on a grounder by Paul Casanova, Mike Epstein sent them home with a single.
[DH] Twins 2, Brewers 1 (night game) / Brewers 4, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Rich Reese batted the Twins to a 2-1 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Brewers came back to win the nightcap, 4-2, with the aid of a two-run homer by Bob Burda. In the first game, Jim Perry, who was taken out in the ninth inning after suffering a pulled groin muscle, gained his 16th victory. Tom Hall finished. The Brewers scored their run off Perry in the fifth when Roberto Pena singled, stole second and Jerry McNertney singled. Reese drove in the tying run with a double in the sixth and plated the winning marker with a single in the eighth.
Luis Tiant, making his first appearance for the Twins since breaking his shoulder May 28, was the loser of the second game, although allowing only one run on two walks and a single by Dave May in the first inning. Burda hit his homer off reliever Stan Williams in the sixth with Mike Hegan on base via a walk. Singles by Pena, Phil Roof and Lew Krausse added a run off Dick Woodson in the ninth. The Twins averted a shutout by scoring twice in their half of the ninth.
Angels 5, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
The Angels bunched seven hits, six of them in succession, for four runs in the fourth inning and posted a 5-0 victory over the Athletics behind the pitching of Rudy May. Jim Fregosi opened the stanza with a single and, after one out, Jim Spencer tripled, Jay Johnstone and Bill Voss hit successive doubles and Joe Azcue singled. May doubled Azcue to third and Sandy Alomar bounced a single off home plate, but Azcue held third and May was trapped off second to keep the Angels from adding other runs before the inning ended.
[DH] Astros 7, Braves 5 (night game) / Braves 3, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Pitching his first complete game the of season, Ron Reed posted a a 3-1 victory to give the Braves a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Astros, who won the first game, 7-5. In the lidlifter, the Braves scored four unearned runs off Wade Blasingame in the first three innings and added a homer by Orlando Cepeda to take a 5-2 lead. The Astros, who got their initial pair on a circuit clout by Bob Watson, rallied to tie the score in the sixth. George Culver opened the seventh with an infield hit and reached second on a wild throw by Clete Boyer. After sacrifice by Jesus Alou, Joe Morgan singled to score Culver. Morgan then stole second and counted an extra run on a single by Doug Rader. Reed, who suffered a broken shoulder in spring training, pitched a six-hitter in the nightcap. Cepeda and Hal King hit back-to-back homers in the second inning off Larry Dierker.
Giants 5, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Yielding only four hits, Skip Pitlock pitched the first complete game of his major league career as the Giants defeated the Dodgers, 5-2. The Giants jumped off to a 4-0 lead before Bill Singer could retire a batter in the first inning. Bobby Bonds led off with a double, Tito Fuentes bunted safely, Ken Henderson singled to score Bonds and Willie McCovey ripped a three-run homer. Jim Ray Hart added a round-tripper off Pete Mikkelsen in the eighth. Ted Sizemore had three of the Dodgers' hits and drove in their runs with a single in the fourth. Those tallies were unearned because of an error by Fuentes.
Expos 8, Pirates 0 at Montreal (night game):
Dan McGinn gave up only three hits, none after the second inning, and pitched the Expos to an 8-0 victory over the Pirates. The Expos iced the verdict with a six-run explosion in the fourth. After singles by John Bateman and Bobby Wine, together with a pass to Marv Staehle, loaded the bases, an infield hit by Raon Fairly, an error and a single by Rusty Staub produced three runs. Bob Bailey then smashed a homer to add three more.
Cubs 6, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
After pitching hitless ball for the first six innings, Fergie Jenkins settled for a three-hitter as the Cubs defeated the Mets, 6-1. Glenn Beckert, who wound up with three hits for the Cubs, singled in the first inning and scored on a double by Ron Santo. Johnny Callison homered in the second. Another run scored when Beckert grounded into a forceout at second with the bases loaded in the fifth. Don Kessinger batted in two of the Cubs' last three runs with a grounder and a single.
Cardinals 4, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
Supported by three homers, Mike Torrez beat the Phillies, 4-1, to give the Cardinals their fifth straight victory in the club's longest winning streak of the season. Carl Taylor opened the Cardinals' scoring with a circuit clout in the first inning. Julian Javier homered in the sixth and, after Dick Allen was safe on an error, Jose Cardenal also rapped a round-tripper.
Padres 10, Reds 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Reds rapped Clay Kirby for 11 hits, but all were singles, while the Padres banged 11 hits, including a homer and double by Ollie Brown, to beat the Western division leaders, 10-3. Kirby was aided by four double plays. Brown hit his homer after Jose Arcia and Cito Gaston had singled in the third inning. Brown's double drove in two of the Padres' five runs in a seventh-inning outburst.
