Orioles 3, Red Sox 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Palmer posted his 16th victory, matching his 1969 winning mark with the Orioles, and pitched his fourth shutout of the season by defeating the Red Sox, 3-0. The Orioles got off to a fast start against Sonny Siebert, scoring two runs in the first inning on singles by Don Buford, Paul Blair, Merv Rettenmund and Elrod Hendricks. Davey Johnson singled in the second, took third when Siebert threw wildly on a bunt by Palmer and scored the final run on a sacrifice fly by Buford.

White Sox 9, Brewers 3 at Chicago (night game):
Ed Herrmann hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career and Jim Magnuson gained his first victory when the White Sox defeated the Brewers, 9-3. Herrmann connected for the circuit off Gene Brabender in the first inning after a single by Luis Aparicio and two walks had loaded the bases. Bill Melton batted in two runs with a single in the second and Syd O'Brien homered with a mate aboard in eighth. Gus Gil and Max Alvis hit round-trippers for the Brewers.

Yankees 7, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Thurman Munson and Bobby Murcer hit two-run homers off Sam McDowell in the fifth inning to power the Yankees to a 7-3 victory over the Indians. Munson's homer followed a single by Horace Clarke. After a pass to Roy White and forceout by Danny Cater, Murcer also hit for the circuit. Ray Fosse homered with two men on base in the sixth to account for the Indians' tallies.

Tigers 3, Senators 1 at Detroit (night game):
Pitching his first complete game since July 8, Mickey Lolich gained his 10th victory as the Tigers ended a four-game losing streak by defeating the Senators, 3-1. Al Kaline doubled and Don Wert singled to produce the Tigers' initial run in the fourth inning. A double by Wert, an error and a wild pitch added a tally in the seventh. The Senators scored in the eighth on a double by Rick Reichardt, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by Ed Brinkman, but Mickey Stanley clinched Lolich's decision by hitting a homer in the Tigers' half.

A's 4, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Chuck Dobson yielded only four hits and extended his personal winning streak to six games by pitching the Athletics to a 4-1 victory over the Royals. The A's scored two of their runs in fourth. Joe Rudi bunted safely but hurt his hand and gave way to Felipe Alou, who scored on a double by Sal Bando. Don Mincher singled to plate Bando. Two other runs followed in the sixth on a walk to Bando, double by Mincher and single by Reggie Jackson.

Angels 7, Twins 5 at Minnesota (night game):
A pair of two-run homers by Jim Spencer sparked the Angels to a 7-5 victory over the Twins. The Angels were trailing, 4-1, when Tommie Reynolds singled and Spencer cut his club's deficit with a homer in the sixth inning. The Twins picked up a run in their half, but the Angels then rallied for three in the eighth. Ray Oyler singled and Ken McMullen walked. Billy Cowan grounded into a double play, erasing McMullen, but Reynolds singled to score Oyler. Spencer followed with his second homer of the game for the winning blow.

Dodgers 12, Braves 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Willie Davis hit a grand-slam homer and Bill Russell contributed two triples and a single as the Dodgers walloped the Braves, 12-2. Backed by 14-hit attack, Alan Foster beat the Braves for the fourth straight time this season. Singles by Foster and Manny Mota, around a pass to Billy Grabarkewitz, loaded the bases for Davis' slam off Don Cardwell in the fifth inning on a blooper-type homer that traveled only about 330 feet into the right field grandstand. Orlando Cepeda a hit homer for the Braves.

[DH] Expos 6, Cubs 2 (night game) / Cubs 11, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
The batting of Bob Bailey and pitching of Mike Wegener combined to give the Expos a 6-2 victory in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, but the Cubs came back to take the second game, 11-3. Bailey drove in five runs with a homer and single, while Wegener turned in his first complete game since last September 15. In the nightcap, Larry Gura hurled the route for the Cubs and posted his first major league victory. Jim Hickman homered for the Cubs with two men on base in the first inning and Johnny Callison added a solo swat in the third to highlight a 15-hit attack in support of Gura. The rookie lefthander gave up seven hits, including homers by Rusty Staub and John Boccabella.

Pirates 4, Phillies 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Luke Walker yielded only two hits and pitched the Pirates to a 4-0 victory over the Phillies. Walker retired the first 15 batters before Jim Hutto and Mike Ryan singled to open the sixth inning. Rick Joseph hit into a double play and Bill Mazeroski, as the middleman, set the N. L. career record for most putouts by a second baseman with 4,781. The Pirates scored in the first on a triple by Matty Alou and infield out by Al Oliver. Richie Hebner doubled and Bill Mazeroski singled for a run in the fourth. Alou walked in the fifth and Oliver followed with a homer to wrap up the scoring.

Astros 4, Padres 3 at San Diego (night game):
After erasing a a 3-0 deficit, the Astros scored in the 10th inning to edge the Padres, 4-3. Doug Rader led off that stanza with a single and Denis Menke sacrificed. Following a pass to John Mayberry, Cesar Cedeno struck out, but Johnny Edwards came through with the game-winning single.

Giants 5, Reds 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Succeeding on his fourth try, Gaylord Perry moved into the class of 15-game winners by pitching the Giants to a 5-3 victory over the Reds. Perry held the Reds hitless until one out in the sixth inning when a single by Pete Rose, three walks and a double by Lee May produced Cincy tallies. The Giants scored twice in the first on singles by Ron Hunt and Tito Fuentes, a walk to Willie Mays, sacrifice fly by Willie McCovey and groundout by Ken Henderson. Two errors by Woody Woodward led to a pair of unearned runs in the fourth. Henderson singled and Dick Dietz doubled for the final tally in the eighth.

Mets 5, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Danny Frisella, making his first start since July 14, 1968, gained the victory when the Mets used three unearned runs to defeat the Cardinals, 5-3. Steve Carlton, who started for the Redbirds, beat himself. Tommie Agee opened the game by drawing a walk and, with one out, Cleon Jones bounced to Carlton, who threw wildly to second base, both runners advancing. Donn Clendenon drove them home with a single. After stealing second, Clendenon counted on a two-out single by Joe Foy. Singles by Bud Harrelson and Jones, an error by Dick Allen and a grounder by Foy added two Met runs in the third.
