Today's scores and summaries:

White Sox 7, Brewers 3 at Chicago (day game):
After seven consecutive losses, Jerry Janeski broke into the winning column when the White Sox erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Brewers, 7-3. Syd O'Brien struck out to open the fifth but reached first safely when the pitch got past catcher Phil Roof. Luis Aparicio walked, then Carlos May, Duane Josephson, Ken Berry and Bobby Knoop followed with run-scoring singles. Dave May's throw from the outfield on Knoop's hit struck Berry and bounced away, allowing Berry to cross the plate with the fifth run of the frame. Bill Melton had an earlier homer for the White Sox.

[DH] Indians 4, Orioles 0 (night game) / Orioles 7, Indians 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Dean Chance posted his first shutout in an Indians' uniform, the 33rd of his career, to win the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 4-0, before Jim Hardin celebrated his 27th birthday by pitching the Orioles to a 7-1 victory in the nightcap. Chance allowed four hits in stopping the Orioles on their five-game winning streak. Tony Horton decided the outcome by smashing a homer off Mike Cuellar with two men on base in the first inning. Graig Nettles added a circuit clout in the sixth. Hardin helped himself to the nightcap victory with a two-run triple in the second inning and picked up credit for another RBI by drawing a pass with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Royals 5, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals, after being held scoreless on two hits off Diego Segui in the first six innings, exploded for five runs in the seventh, including homers by Amos Otis and Bob Oliver, to defeat the Athletics, 5-3. The A's runs counted in the second, two being forced home on passes with the bases loaded. Otis broke Segul's mastery with his homer to lead off the seventh. Lou Piniella singled and Oliver followed with a homer to kayo Segui. The A's called on three relievers before the side was retired, but not until the Royals added their other runs. A single by Paul Schaal, pass to Jim Campanis and single by Pat Kelly produced the tie-breaking tally. Then, after Cookie Rojas singled to load the bases, Otis, up for a second time, walked to force in an extra run.

Twins 2, Angels 1 at Minnesota (night game):
Leading off in the 14th inning, George Mitterwald smashed a homer to give the Twins a 2-1 victory over the Angels. Bill Voss hit for the circuit in the eighth to produce the Angels' tally. The Twins tied the score in their half when Harmon Killebrew was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in pinch-runner Jim Kaat, who took over after Charlie Manuel drew a walk to open the stanza. A single by Cesar Tovar, sacrifice by Danny Thompson and intentional pass to Tony Oliva then filled the sacks.

[DH] Tigers 2, Yankees 1 (night game) / Yankees 7, Tigers 5 at New York (night game):
Mickey Stanley, who hit a triple and double, scored twice and Mike Kilkenny doled out four singles as the Tigers won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1. The hitting of Roy White and Bobby Murcer, who drove in five runs between them, enabled the Yankees to take the second game, 7-5. Stanley hit his triple in the third inning of the lidlifter and scored on a wild pitch by Mel Stottlemyre. After the Yankees tied the count on singles by Gene Michael and Thurman Munson, around a sacrifice, in their half of the third, Stanley doubled in the fifth, took third on a grounder by Al Kaline and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jim Northrup. White homered with two men on base in the first inning of the nightcap and Murcer hit a two-run drive that bounced off Ike Brown's glove into the lower seats of the left field stands in the fifth. Dalton Jones had a homer for the Tigers.

Senators 5, Red Sox 2 at Washington (night game):
Tom Grieve homered with a man on base and Frank Howard knocked in two runs with singles to boost the Senators to a 5-2 victory over the Red Sox. With the score tied, 2-2, Ed Brinkman singled in the seventh inning, Wayne Comer walked and Howard singled to break the deadlock. Grieve clinched the decision with his circuit clout in the eighth. Mike Andrews homered for the Red Sox.

Braves 4, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Felix Millan collected five straight hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Braves' attack in a 4-1 victory over the Dodgers. Millan batted in two runs. Willie Davis had a triple and three singles in five times at bat for the Dodgers.

Cubs 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Ron Santo smashed a homer, two doubles and a single in four trips to back up the pitching of Ken Holtzman as the Cubs defeated the Expos, 4-2. Holtzman did not allow a hit for the first seven innings before giving up two singles in the eighth and another in the ninth. The Cubs, breaking Carl Morton's personal five-game winning streak, got their first run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Jim Hickman with the bases loaded. Santo singled in the fourth and scored on a triple by Don Kessinger. Doubles by Santo and Randy Hundley added a tally in the sixth and Santo wrapped it up with a homer in the eighth.

[DH] Pirates 4, Phillies 0 (night game) / Pirates 8, Phillies 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The pitching of Dock Ellis and Bruce Dal Canton, who yielded six hits apiece, enabled the Pirates to sweep a twi-night doubleheader with the Phillies, 4-0 and 8-3. The Pirates' support of Ellis in the first game included a two-run double by Al Oliver and a homer by Willie Stargell to beat Jim Bunning, who yielded only five hits but was turned back in his third bid for his 100th N. L. victory to go along with 118 in the A. L. The Pirates clinched the second game with five runs in the third inning. Oliver batted in two with a triple. After an intentional pass to Richie Hebner with one out, Bob Robertson hit a three-run homer.

Astros 8, Padres 6 at San Diego (night game):
The Astros hit eight doubles, setting a Houston club record, to mark an 8-6 victory over the Padres. Jesus Alou, Bob Watson and Denis Menke each slammed two and Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader rapped one apiece. Doubles by Watson and Alou, around a single by Johnny Edwards, produced a pair of runs in the second inning. The Astros then broke loose for five in the fifth with the aid of doubles by Rader, Menke and Cedeno. A walk, single by Watson and balk also figured in the scoring. Nate Colbert hit a homer with a man on base for the Padres.

Giants 9, Reds 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Staked to a seven-run lead in the first inning, Frank Reberger fashioned the first complete game of his major league career and pitched the Giants to a 9-3 victory over the Reds. Ray Washburn, who started for the Reds, was able to retire only one batter. Willie McCovey and Frank Johnson each smashed a homer with two men on base. Two walks, an error and a sacrifice fly by Tito Fuentes, after John Noriega relieved, added the seventh run of the stanza. Tony Perez hit a homer for the Reds to mark his 100th RBI.

Cardinals 3, Mets 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Turning in his best performance of the season, Nelson Briles pitched the Cardinals to a 3-0 victory over the Mets and broke Tom Seaver's personal nine-game winning streak. Lou Brock led off the game with a double for the Cardinals, advanced on an infield out and, after a pass to Joe Hague, stole home on the front end of a double theft. Other runs counted in the fourth when Hague tripled and scored on a single by Dick Allen, who then stole second, advanced to third after a long fly by Jose Cardenal and crossed the plate on an infield hit by Mike Shannon.
