Today's scores and summaries:
Royals 11, Red Sox 3 at Boston (day game):
Al Fitzmorris pitched the first complete game of his major league career and Ed Kirkpatrick smashed his first grand-slam homer as the Royals beat the Red Sox, 11-3. Kirkpatrick's slam in the eighth inning came off John Curtis, who was appearing in his first game for the Red Sox after being called up from Pawtucket (Eastern). Fitzmorris allowed six hits, including homers by Mike Andrews and Tony Conigliaro.
Angels 3, Orioles 2 at California (night game):
Roger Repoz rapped a tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning to carry the Angels to a 3-2 victory over the Orioles. Frank Robinson, who batted in both Orioles' runs, plated the initial tally with an infield out in the first. The Angels scored in the fourth on a triple by Alex Johnson and single by Jay Johnstone. Jim Fregosi homered in the sixth before the Orioles tied the score in the eighth on a single by Terry Crowley, forceout by Don Buford and double by Robinson.
Brewers 3, Tigers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Marty Pattin, who gave up three hits and two runs in the first inning, yielded only two more hits over the balance of the route and pitched the Brewers to a 3-2 victory over the Tigers. The Brewers knotted the count against Denny McLain in the fourth on a double by Bob Burda, triple by Roberto Pena and safe bunt by Phil Roof. Dave May then broke the tie with a homer in the fifth.
Yankees 4, White Sox 3 at New York (day game):
A double by Frank Baker drove in the tie-breaking run in the eighth inning to enable the Yankees to defeat the White Sox, 4-3. The White Sox loaded the bases in the fourth and took a 3-1 lead on a two-run single by Ken Berry and sacrifice fly by Bobby Knoop, but the Yankees pulled even in the fifth with a homer by Roy White, a single by Jim Lyttle and double by Jake Gibbs. Jerry Kenney walked in the eighth, stole second, moved to third after a long fly and crossed the plate on Baker's double.
Indians 4, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
Pitching a three-hitter, Sam McDowell gained his 17th victory when the Indians defeated the Athletics, 4-3. Vada Pinson led off the game with a homer for the Indians, but the A's loaded bases with the aid of an error in the third inning and scored three unearned runs on a double by Tommy Davis. The Indians came back with three in the fifth. Jack Heidemann doubled and McDowell walked. After Pinson forced McDowell, Heidemann scored on a single by Graig Nettles. Pinson crossed the plate on a wild pitch and the winning run followed when Roy Foster singled.
Senators 1, Twins 0 at Washington (night game):
After Cesar Tovar opened the game with a safe bunt, Dick Bosman did not allow another hit and pitched the Senators to a 1-0 victory over the Twins. The Nats' run off Jim Kaat was unearned in the first inning. With one away, Wayne Comer beat out a bunt and continued to third on a wild throw by Harmon Killebrew. Frank Howard was passed intentionally and when Rick Reichardt forced Howard, Comer crossed the plate.
Braves 4, Expos 1 at Atlanta (night game):
With help from Hoyt Wilhelm in the ninth inning, George Stone gained his first victory since July 6 when the Braves defeated the Expos, 4-1. Tony Gonzalez batted in the Braves' first two runs with a double in the third inning. Stone, who allowed only three hits, gave up a homer by Bob Bailey in the fourth, but the Braves came back with a pair in the sixth when Gonzalez singled and Rico Carty hit for the circuit. Stone was removed after a single by Gary Sutherland and a one-out pass to Rust Staub in the ninth. Wilhelm got Bailey to ground into a forceout and then struck out Coco Laboy to end the game.
Cubs 6, Giants 3 at Chicago (day game):
Milt Pappas pitched a seven-hitter and smashed one of the Cubs' three homers in a 6-3 victory over the Giants. Ken Henderson singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs for the Giants in the first inning, but Pappas hit his homer after Ron Santo was safe on an error to tie the score in fourth. Billy Williams cracked the tie with a circuit clout in the fifth and Santo provided the winning blow by hitting a homer with two men on base in the seventh. Willie McCovey accounted for the Giants' last run with a round-tripper in the ninth.
Reds 6, Mets 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Backed by three homers, Jim Merritt notched his 17th victory of the season as the Reds beat the Mets, 6-1. Merritt, who gave up only five hits and struck out 13, yielded the Mets' runs in the first inning on triples by Cleon Jones and Donn Clendenon. The Reds powered their way into the lead in the fourth when Tony Perez walked and Johnny Bench and Lee May hit back-to-back homers. Perez added a homer in the sixth and drove in the last two runs with a double in the seventh.
Astros 4, Phillies 3 at Houston (night game):
Jesus Alou, who had been on a hot hitting streak, batted in two runs with a single in the eighth inning as the Astros rallied to beat the Phillies, 4-3. Alou hit a sacrifice fly to plate the Astros' initial run in the fourth, but the Phillies went ahead with three in the sixth. Doug Rader singled to open the Astros' eighth and Denis Menke walked. After a safe bunt by Cesar Cedeno loaded the bases, one run scored on an infield out by John Mayberry. An intentional pass to Johnny Edwards reloaded the sacks and, after Norm Miller popped up, Alou hit his winning single.
Padres 9, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
Jose Arcia collected four of the Padres' 16 hits and joined with Ollie Brown in batting home three runs apiece to lead the way to a 9-7 victory over the Cardinals. Arcia walked with the bases loaded in the second inning and drove in other runs with a single in the third and a double in the fifth. Brown homered with a man on base in the third and delivered another run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. Lou Brock, Dick Allen and Joe Torre hit homers for the Cardinals.
