Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 8, Twins 1 at Boston (night game):
Although collecting nine hits off Ray Culp, the Twins scored only on a homer by Brant Alyea and lost to the Red Sox, 8-1, for their seventh straight defeat. Carl Yastrzemski and Rico Petrocelli hit round-trippers for the Red Sox. Yastrzemski, who connected with a man on base in the seventh inning, also singled for another RBI in the eighth.

Angels 7, Tigers 3 at California (night game):
Clyde Wright helped himself with a three-run homer and got the support of a two-run smash by Tommie Reynolds as the Angels defeated the Tigers, 7-3. Reynolds and Tom Egan singled ahead of Wright's wallop in the second inning. Reynolds homered after Jim Fregosi was hit by a pitch in the third.

Brewers 4, Indians 3 at Milwaukee (night game):
An error by Eddie Leon permitted the Brewers to score with two out in the 11th inning to gain a 4-3 victory over the Indians. Tito Francona opened the stanza with a pinch-double and gave way to Max Alvis, who advanced to third on a bunt by Ted Kubiak. After an intentional pass to Jerry McNertney, Tommy Harper struck out, but Mike Hegan then hit a sharp grounder that bounced off Leon's glove, allowing Alvis to cross the plate.

Yankees 3, Royals 2 at New York (night game):
Jake Gibbs led off the 10th inning with a homer to give the Yankees a 3-2 victory over the Royals. Rich Severson singled with the bases loaded to bat in the Royals' runs in the second inning. The Yankees picked up a tally in the third and tied the score when Bobby Murcer hit for the circuit in the seventh.

A's 4, Orioles 0 at Oakland (night game):
Chuck Dobson recorded his 15th victory and Mudcat Grant received credit for his 21st save when the Athletics' mound pair combined to beat the Orioles, 4-0. Grant relieved with two men on base and one out in the eighth inning and preserved the shutout. Bert Campaneris, who had three hits, scored two of the A's runs and batted in one. The other tally came on a homer by Rick Monday in the eighth inning.

Senators 6, White Sox 5 at Washington (night game):
After failing to hold two earlier leads, the Senators scored in the 10th inning on a single by Ed Stroud, a hit batsman and a pinch-single by Del Unser to defeat the White Sox, 8-5. The Senators counted twice in the first, but Tommy John batted himself into a tie with a two-run double in the second. After the Nats went ahead again, 5-2, in the fifth, Tommy McCraw, pinch-hitting for John, drove in two runs with a double in the seventh when the White Sox rallied to tie the score.

[DH] Braves 10, Mets 2 (night game) / Mets 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
The N. L.'s record for most grand slams in one season, 40, set in 1969, was tied when Hal King homered with the bases loaded to highlight the Braves' 10-2 victory over the Mets in the opener of a twi-night doubleheader. The Mets came back to win the nightcap, 4-2. The Braves had a slim 3-2 lead in the lidlifter before King broke the tight game apart with his jackpot wallop off Tug McGraw in the seventh inning. Orlando Cepeda added a three-run homer in the eighth. In the nightcap, the Mets erupted for all their runs in the seventh, starting with a circuit clout by Duffy Dyer. Dave Marshall and Tommie Agee then singled and Wayne Garrett homered for the winning blow.

Dodgers 13, Cubs 9 at Chicago (day game):
After the Cubs exploded for five runs in the first inning, the Dodgers came slugging back to gain a 13-9 victory, extending their winning streak to five games. The Cubs' outburst in the first featured a grand slam by Joe Pepitone. The Dodgers, in making their comeback, scored in every inning from the third through the eighth with an attack that included two homers and a triple by Billy Grabarkewitz, a two-run triple by Willie Davis and a two-run homer by Jim Lefebvre. Maury Wills collected five hits in five trips. In addition to Pepitone's slam, the Cubs had circuit clouts by Billy Williams, Johnny Callison and Randy Hundley.

Phillies 5, Reds 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Phillies scored two runs in the fourth inning on an error by Johnny Bench and added three runs in the fifth to defeat the Reds, 5-4. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Bench tried to pick Johnny Briggs off third, but his throw struck the runner and bounced into the Reds' dugout. Bernie Carbo homered after a single by Bench in the Reds' half, but Mel Behney, pitching in relief, was the loser in the next stanza in his first major league appearance. A Reds' rally in the ninth was cut off when Joe Hoerner induced Carbo to ground into a double play.

Expos 10, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
The Expos, who had lost nine straight games in Houston since entering the league last season, gained their first victory in the Astrodome, defeating the Astros, 10-2. Rusty Staub hit two homers, his first in Houston since being traded by the Astros to the Expos early in 1969. Adolfo Phillips contributed an inside-the-park homer to the Montreal attack.

[DH] Pirates 2, Padres 1 (night game) / Pirates 10, Padres 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, who battled to win the first game, 2-1, erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning of the second game and breezed to a 10-1 victory to sweep a twi-night doubleheader with the Padres. Roberto Clemente homered in the seventh inning of the curtain raiser to snap a scoreless duel and the Pirates then added what proved to be the deciding run when Jerry May tripled, Bob Robertson walked and Al Oliver grounded into a double play. The Padres' run counted in the eighth on a double by Ed Spiezio and two infield outs. The Pirates' big inning in the nightcap started with a two-run single by Luke Walker and included a two-run homer by Willie Stargell and two-run triple by Dave Cash. Seven of the runs were unearned.

[DH] Cardinals 2, Giants 1 (night game) / Giants 5, Cardinals 4 at St. Louis (night game):
Splitting a pair of overtime games, the Cardinals won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, in 13 innings and the Giants took the nightcap, 5-4, in 10 innings. The Cardinals' winning run in the first game scored on a single by Julian Javier, wild pitch by Don McMahon and wild throw by Dick Dietz on a bunt by Joe Hague. McMahon appeared again in relief in the second game and was the winner when the Giants scored in the 10th on a single by Frank Johnson and double by Bobby Bonds. The Cardinals had a two-run homer by Lou Brock. Ken Henderson hit one for the Giants in the seventh inning, but the Cardinals went ahead, 4-2, in their half with a walk and a triple by Jose Cardenal. Ron Hunt hit a pinch-homer for the Giants with a man on base to tie the score in the eighth.
