[DH] Red Sox 5, Twins 3 (day game) / Red Sox 11, Twins 7 at Boston (night game):
The Twins suffered their eighth and ninth consecutive defeats, losing separate-admission, day and night games with the Red Sox, 5-3 and 11-7. In the sunshine contest, Rico Petrocelli homered for the Red Sox in the second inning, but Tony Oliva batted in two runs with a double and a single to enable the Twins to take a 3-2 lead. The Red Sox took command with two runs in the sixth. Reggie Smith singled, Carl Yastrzemski was safe on an error and Petrocelli singled to tie the score. Billy Conigliaro followed with a single, plating Yastrzemski with the leading run. The Red Sox started the night game with homers by Smith and Yastrzemski, but Oliva and Brant Alyea each homered for the Twins and combined to drive in five runs as the Twins moved ahead, 7-3. The Red Sox began their comeback in the fifth when Billy Conigliaro tripled and George Thomas homered. The Red Sox wiped out that deficit and took the lead with four runs in the seventh and clinched the decision with two more in the eighth on doubles by Yastrzemski and Thomas and a single by John Kennedy.

Tigers 5, Angels 1 at California (night game):
Dick McAuliffe and Al Kaline batted in two runs apiece to provide the Tigers with a 5-1 victory over the Angels. A double by McAuliffe led to the Tigers' run on an infield out by Kaline in the first inning. McAuliffe picked up his RBIs with a bases-loaded single in the second, and Kaline homered in the third.

Yankees 5, Royals 4 at New York (day game):
The Yankees rallied for three runs in the eighth inning to edge the Royals, 5-4. Roy White hit his 18th homer of the season in the first, a career high for the Yankee outfielder. The Royals, however, were leading, 4-2, when the Yankees' rally started with singles by Thurman Munson and White. After a sacrifice by Bobby Murcer, Danny Cater singled to tie the score. Cater took second on the throw to the plate and counted the winning run on a single by pinch-hitter Jake Gibbs.

Orioles 7, A's 1 at Oakland (day game):
Mike Cuellar pitched a seven-hitter and gained his 17th victory when the Orioles defeated the Athletics, 7-1. Brooks Robinson hit a homer and Andy Etchebarren batted in two runs with a double and single to pace the Orioles to a 4-0 lead before the A's counted in the eighth inning on a single by Rick Monday and double by Tommy Davis. Merv Rettenmund then iced the verdict for the Orioles with a three-run homer in the ninth.

Senators 4, White Sox 2 at Washington (night game):
After Wayne Comer beat out an infield hit, Frank Howard and Rick Reichardt smashed back-to-back homers in the seventh inning to lift the Senators to a 4-2 victory over the White Sox. Reichardt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to force in the game's first run. The White Sox were held to four hits by Jackie Brown, including a homer by Tommy McCraw in the sixth and another by Ed Herrmann in the ninth.

Braves 3, Mets 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A passed ball by Jerry Grote on a third strike cross-up by Tom Seaver and wild throw by the catcher after retrieving the ball enabled the Braves to score two runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Seaver, who was the loser, gave up the Braves' initial run in the second inning on singles by Orlando Cepeda, Rico Carty and Clete Boyer, but the Mets' ace singled in the sixth and scored on a two-out homer by Donn Clendenon.
[DH] Dodgers 9, Cubs 7 (day game) / Cubs 13, Dodgers 2 at Chicago (day game):
The Dodgers extended their winning streak to six games with a 9-7 victory in the opener of doubleheader, but their string was broken by the Cubs in the nightcap, 13-2. In the lidlifter, Jim Hickman and Johnny Callison homered for the Cubs, who erupted for six runs in the third inning to take a 7-3 lead. Willie Crawford started the Dodgers' comeback with a two-run homer in the sixth. An error and consecutive singles by Bill Russell, Willie Davis and Wes Parker tied the score in the seventh and Tom Haller then hit a sacrifice fly to send the Dodgers in front. A double by Maury Wills and another two-bagger by Parker for his fourth hit of the game added the clinching tally in the ninth. Billy Williams collected four hits for the the Cubs in the nightcap, including a homer in the first. The Cubs again used the third as their inning for a big outburst, scoring seven runs. Joe Pepitone batted in two with a single and Randy Hundley homered a with man on base. The Cubs also had later round-trippers by Ron Santo and Paul Popovich. Andy Kosco hit one for the Dodgers.

Reds 5, Phillies 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
Lee May batted in all five of the Reds' runs, including the winning tally with a single in the 14th inning, to beat the Phillies, 5-4. Johnny Briggs homered for the Phillies in the first inning, but Bernie Carbo doubled and May hit for the circuit in the second. A grounder by May added an RBI in the sixth. The Phillies went ahead with three runs in the eighth, only to have May tie the score with a round-tripper in the ninth. Bobby Tolan beat out an infield hit in the 14th and moved to second on a grounder by Johnny Bench. Following an intentional pass to Carbo, May capped his night with the winning single.

Astros 7, Expos 3 at Houston (day game):
A four-run outburst in the third inning sent the Astros on their way to a 7-3 victory, although the Expos rapped Don Wilson for 16 hits, including homers by Bob Bailey and Rusty Staub. Joe Morgan singled to open the third, stole second, continued to third on a wild throw by John Bateman and scored when Jim Fairey fumbled the ball in center field. After Denis Menke doubled with two out, Doug Rader rapped a homer. Singles by Johnny Edwards, Cesar Geronimo and Wilson added the fourth run of the frame.

Pirates 9, Padres 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Jose Pagan batted in five runs with two homers and Bob Veale drove in three with a double while pitching the Pirates to a 9-3 victory over the Padres. Pagan's first homer in the fourth inning followed singles by Al Oliver and Willie Stargell. Bill Mazeroski added another round-tripper. In the seventh, after a double by Stargell, single by Pagan and intentional walk to Gene Alley loaded the bases, Veale cleaned the sacks with his double. Pagan hit his second homer of the game after Stargell singled in the seventh.

Giants 3, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (night game):
Going to extremes, the Giants used a homer by Willie McCovey and a safe bunt by Ken Henderson to rally in the ninth inning for a a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. After the Redbirds took an early 2-0 lead, Bobby Bonds homered for the Giants in the seventh. McCovey led off the ninth with the tying wallop. Henderson then beat out his bunt, stole second and scored the deciding run on a single by Hal Lanier.
