Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, White Sox 2 at Boston (day game):
With Reggie Smith, Tony Conigliaro and Mike Andrews taking care of run production, the Red Sox defeated the White Sox, 7-2. Smith batted in three runs with a homer and a double. Conigliaro and Andrews drove in two apiece. Conigliaro's RBIs came on a homer and single, while Andrews got his pair on two doubles. Bill Melton homered with a man on base for the White Sox tallies.

Angels 3, Indians 0 at California (night game):
A scoreless duel between Tom Murphy and Sam McDowell was broken when Alex Johnson smashed a homer in the seventh inning to spark the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the Indians. The Angels added another run in that same stanza when Vada Pinson crashed into Eddie Leon while chasing a pop fly by Murphy and the ball fell for a single, Jim Spencer scoring. McDowell went out for a pinch-hitter in the eighth and Fred Lasher yielded the Angels' last tally.

Orioles 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Homers by Chico Salmon and Boog Powell enabled the Orioles to defeat the Brewers, 3-2, behind the three-hit pitching of Jim Palmer, who had a streak of wildness in his only bad inning. Salmon hit his homer with Don Buford on base in the third. Mike Hegan was safe on an interference call against catcher Andy Etchebarren to open the Brewers' seventh. Dave May singled. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Danny Walton singled to score Hegan. Another wild pitch led to an intentional pass, loading the bases, and Ted Kubiak then walked, forcing in the tying run. Powell came to Palmer's rescue, smashing his homer in the eighth for the winning run.

Tigers 5, A's 3 at Oakland (night game):
A three-run homer by Norm Cash in the eighth inning carried the Tigers to a 5-3 victory over the Athletics and handed Mudcat Grant his first defeat of the season. The A's ace reliever gave up a single by Al Kaline and a pass to Jim Northrup before Cash connected for the circuit. Denny McLain and three Tiger relievers yielded only four hits. McLain was banished from the game in the fifth inning in an argument over a call.

Senators 7, Royals 0 at Washington (night game):
Jim Hannan pitched the second one-hitter to the credit of Senators' staff in five days and beat the Royals, 7-0, as the Nats posted their seventh straight victory in the longest winning streak in two years under Ted Williams as manager. With two out in the fifth inning, Paul Schaal hit safely to left field and when Frank Howard attempted a shoestring catch, the ball went past him for a triple. Only three other men reached base, one on an error by Howard and two on walks. The Senators sent Hannan on the way to victory with three runs in the first on a pass to Ed Stroud and back-to-back homers by Howard and Mike Epstein. Dick Bosman pitched the other one-hitter against the Twins August 13.

Cubs 7, Padres 0 at Chicago (day game):
Milt Pappas scattered six hits and pitched the Cubs to a 7-0 victory over the Padres. Billy Williams appeared in his 1,104th consecutive game for the Cubs in a string that started September 22, 1963, and moved ahead of Joe Sewell into third place on the all-time durability list.

Reds 9, Phillies 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench and Tony Perez each homered with two on base to help Jim Merritt become the N.L.'s first 18-game winner of the season as the Reds defeated the Phillies, 9-3. Bench's blast followed singles by Pete Rose and Bobby Tolan in the first inning. Perez connected in the fourth. Merritt added to his margin with a homer in the seventh. The Phillies, who were held to one hit in the first seven innings, spoiled Merritt's shutout bid with three runs in the eighth, two crossing the plate on a pinch-homer by Joseph.

Giants 5, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
With two out in the eighth inning, Willie Mays singled and Willie McCovey homered to bring the Giants a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. The Giants began the scoring with two runs in the second on singles by Jim Ray Hart and Hal Lanier, an error by Roberto Clemente and double by Bobby Bonds. Hart singled and Lanier doubled for another run in the fourth, but the Pirates went ahead with a four-run outburst in the fifth. Gene Alley and Gene Clines singled and Matty Alou was safe on an error by Hart to load the bases. Dave Cash singled for one run and another scored when Clemente grounded into a double play. Willie Stargell then sent the Pirates ahead with a two-run homer.

Cardinals 11, Dodgers 8 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals built up a 10-3 lead after three innings, enabling Bob Gibson to struggle to an 11-8 victory over the Dodgers. Gibson, who gave up 14 hits, was lifted in the ninth inning, failing to finish for the first time since June 7. The Cardinals also collected 14 hits, including three singles by Jose Cardenal, who batted in three runs. Willie Davis had two triples and a single as the Dodgers' leader.
