Royals 8, Yankees 7 at Kansas City (night game):
Led by Paul Schaal and Tom Matchick, who batted in seven runs between them, the Royals defeated the Yankees for the first time in 10 meetings this season, 8-7. Matchick plated three runs with a double in the second inning. Schaal accounted for two with a triple in the third and added two more with a bases-loaded single in the fifth. Hawk Taylor followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the winning run.
Cubs 4, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Joe Pepitone homered after a single by Billy Williams in the fourth inning to start the Cubs off to a 4-2 victory over the Dodgers. The Cubs added the other pair in the sixth on singles by Jim Hickman and Pepitone, a sacrifice fly by Ron Santo, single by Johnny Callison and an error by Bill Sudakis on an attempted pickoff at third base.
Braves 6, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos were held to three hits by George Stone and their five-game winning streak came to an end with a 6-0 loss to the Braves. Mike Lum homered on Bill Stoneman's first pitch of the game. The Braves then failed to score again until the seventh when two errors opened the way for five unearned runs.
