Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, A's 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Although tagged for 10 hits, Dave McNally became the first 20-game winner in the major leagues this season when the lefthander pitched the Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Athletics. McNally, who reached the charmed circle for the third straight year, gave up the A's run in the third inning on singles by Bert Campaneris and Felipe Alou around a stolen base. The Orioles knocked out Diego Segui in their half of the third, scoring four runs. A single by Don Buford, triple by Paul Blair and single by Boog Powell produced the first two tallies. After Frank Robinson singled, Powell stopping at second, Andy Etchebarren beat out a grounder to Don Mincher and when the first baseman threw wildly, Powell and Robinson crossed the plate.

White Sox 4, Senators 3 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox loaded the bases in the ninth inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Rich Morales to beat the Senators, 4-3. Gail Hopkins beat out a grounder to Aurelio Rodriguez to open the frame and advanced an extra base when the Senators' third baseman threw wildly. Ken Berry walked and Bobby Knoop singled to fill the sacks before Morales hit his fly to plate pinch-runner Tommy McCraw.

Brewers 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Bernie Smith hit his first major league homer, connecting with a man on base in the 10th inning, to carry the Brewers to a 4-2 victory over the Indians. Mike Hegan also hit a two-run homer to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the seventh, but the Indians tied the score with a circuit clout by Roy Foster in the eighth. With two out in the 10th, Ken Sanders helped himself to victory by hitting a single, thus bringing Smith to bat.

[DH] Angels 6, Tigers 4 (night game) / Angels 10, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
A grand-slam homer by Jay Johnstone climaxed a six-run rally in the ninth inning and gave the Angels a 10-6 victory to complete the sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Tigers. The Angels won the first game, 6-4, in 12 innings. The Tigers, who had homers by Dalton Jones and Norm Cash, took a 4-0 lead in the opener before the Angels picked up two runs in the seventh and tied the score in the ninth. After one run scored when Joe Azcue grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, the tying tally followed on a passed ball by Bill Freehan. In the 12th, a pass to Johnstone, double by Jim Spencer and sacrifice fly by Jim Fregosi broke the deadlock. A double by Alex Johnson added an extra marker. Roger Repoz and Johnson homered for the Angels in the nightcap, but Kevin Collins hit for the circuit with two men on base in the eighth to send the Tigers ahead, 6-4. A single by Azcue, double by Sandy Alomar and single by Fregosi tied the score as the Angels rallied in the ninth. After a single by Johnson, an infield out and a pass to Ken McMullen loaded the bases, Johnstone hit his grand slam off Lerrin LaGrow.

Yankees 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Jim Lyttle hit a run-scoring single with two out in the ninth inning to provide the Yankees with a 2-1 victory over the Royals. The Yankees counted their first run on a double by Bobby Murcer and single by Danny Cater in the second. Bob Oliver tied the score with a homer in the seventh. Roy White singled in the ninth, stole second, stopped at third on an infield hit by Cater and crossed the plate when Lyttle singled.

Red Sox 1, Twins 0 at Minnesota (night game):
A bomb scare forced a 43-minute delay in the fourth inning, but the only bomb that exploded was a homer by Tony Conigliaro in the eighth, giving the Red Sox a 1-0 victory over the Twins. The crowd of 17,697 evacuated the stands after an announcement over the public address system that a telephoned warning had been received that a bomb was due to go off.

Dodgers 4, Cubs 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Joe Moeller was spiked on a play at first base with one out in the eighth inning, forcing him to leave the game, but Jim Brewer retired the last five straight batters to complete the Dodgers' 4-1 victory over the Cubs. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the fourth and scored two runs, one when Billy Grabarkewitz grounded into a double play and the other when Von Joshua singled. A triple by Bill Russell added an extra pair of runs in the seventh.

Astros 6, Expos 3 at Montreal (night game):
The Expos lost the longest game in their two-year history when the Astros scored three runs in the 13th inning to beat the expansion club, 6-3. Joe Morgan, who earlier hit a two-run homer for the Astros, walked in the 13th, stole second and continued to third when Mike Marshall uncorked a wild pitch on the fourth ball to Jim Wynn. Larry Howard singled, scoring Morgan. After a long fly by Denis Menke enabled Wynn and Howard to advance after the catch, Doug Rader sent them home with a single.

Braves 7, Mets 6 at New York (night game):
The Braves built up a 7-0 lead with the aid of five unearned runs and then outlasted the Mets, 7-6. An error by Wayne Garrett enabled the Braves to load the bases in the fifth inning and, with two out, Rico Carty batted in two runs with a single and Hal King added three more with a homer. Donn Clendenon drove in five of the Mets' runs with a homer in the eighth and a single in the ninth.

Phillies 3, Reds 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies, who scored twice in the first seven innings although held to only three hits by Tony Cloninger, rose up against Wayne Granger for another run in the 12th to beat the Reds, 3-2. After the Reds got off to a 2-0 lead, the Phillies picked up a run in the second on a walk and a double by Don Money. Another pass to Johnny Briggs, a sacrifice by Money and single by Ron Stone tied the game in the seventh. Rick Joseph, batting for winning pitcher Dick Selma, singled in the 12th and gave way on the paths to Denny Doyle, who completed the circuit on the bases on a sacrifice by Larry Bowa and a single by Tony Taylor.

Padres 4, Pirates 3 at San Diego (night game):
Dave Campbell, who drove in two earlier runs with a homer and single, came through with a bases-loaded hit in the ninth to give the Padres a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Campbell's homer in the first ended a string of 23 scoreless innings by the Pirates' staff. Ollie Brown tied the score at 3-3 with a circuit clout in the eighth. Ed Spiezio singled in the ninth and was forced by Chris Cannizzaro. An infield hit by Ramon Webster and pass to Jose Arcia loaded the bases for Campbell's winning single.

Giants 4, Cardinals 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants, who drew 10 walks, converted four passes into runs to beat the Cardinals. 4-2. Willie Mays strolled on all four of his plate appearances. In the eighth, Mays walked, showed his old-time speed by racing to third on an infield out and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Dick Dietz to score the 1,899th run of his career.
