Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Tigers 2 at Boston (night game):
Ray Culp drove in the deciding run with a single in the sixth inning and was the winner with the help of Gary Wagner when the Red Sox defeated the Tigers, 4-2. Tony Conigliaro batted in the first two runs for the Red Sox with a grounder and a homer. With the score tied, 2-2, Billy Conigliaro doubled in the sixth and Don Pavletich walked. After failing in a bunt attempt, Culp singled to break the tie and Reggie Smith singled to add an insurance counter.

Orioles 10, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Starting with a double by Don Buford on the first pitch of the game, the Orioles piled up 13 hits and defeated the Yankees, 10-2. The Orioles scored four runs in the first inning with the aid of two errors. Brooks Robinson homered with a man on base in the third and knocked in another run with a single in the ninth.

Senators 5, Indians 4 at Washington (night game):
A homer by Frank Howard with a man on base climaxed a four-run outburst in the fifth inning and enabled the Senators to defeat the Indians, 5-4. Aurelio Rodriguez homered for the Nats' initial run in the second. Jim French walked in the fifth and, after two outs, the Senators broke loose. Ed Stroud doubled to score French and Del Unser singled to plate Stroud before Howard wrapped things up with his homer. Graig Nettles hit a two-run homer for the Indians.

Mets 11, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (night game):
The Mets built up a 6-0 lead and then shook off a five-run rally by the Cardinals to emerge with an 11-5 victory that tightened the East division race. The third-place Mets were 1½ games behind the Pirates and one-half game behind the Cubs, both of whom were idle. The Mets knocked out Nelson Briles in the first inning when Donn Clendenon drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single. A grounder by Ken Boswell added another counter after Mike Torrez relieved. Tommie Agee homered in the second and Art Shamsky batted in two more runs with a single in the fifth. The Cardinals struck for their runs in the sixth when Joe Torre homered with two men on base and Ted Simmons hit for the circuit with one aboard, but the Mets pulled away to their comfortable lead in the last three innings. Vic Davalillo set an N. L. record as a Cardinal pinch-hitter with a single in the ninth for his 23rd hit in a substitute role.
