Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 10, Red Sox 9 at Boston (night game):
Four homers, including a grand slam by Jim Price, enabled the Tigers to outslug the Red Sox, 10-9. The Red Sox had a grand slam by Tony Conigliaro and a homer with the bases empty by Mike Andrews in building up an 8-1 lead. The Tigers, whose initial run came on a swat by Jim Northrup, began closing the gap when Price hit his jackpot wallop off Sonny Siebert in the fourth inning. Norm Cash homered with a mate aboard in the fifth when the Tigers went ahead, 9-8. Gates Brown then supplied what proved to be the winning run with a circuit clout in the seventh.

Royals 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Loser of eight straight decisions, Wally Bunker broke into the winning column for the first time this season by pitching the Royals to a 4-0 victory over the Angels. The Royals were held to two hits by Tom Murphy until they erupted for their runs in the seventh inning. Singles by Ed Kirkpatrick, Bill Sorrell, Paul Schaal and Tom Matchick produced the first two tallies. When Bunker hit a high bouncer to Jim Spencer, Schaal beat the first baseman's throw to the plate. After George Spriggs forced Bunker, Cookie Rojas singled to score Matchick with the final run.

[DH] Twins 4, Brewers 0 (night game) / Twins 7, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Jim Perry posted his 20th victory with a shutout in the opener and the Twins exploded for six runs in the 11th inning of the nightcap to sweep a twi-night doubleheader with the Brewers, 4-0 and 7-1. Harmon Killebrew batted in a total of seven runs for the Twins, including three with a homer to support Perry's pitching. In the second game, singles by Cesar Tovar and Killebrew, surrounding a sacrifice, gave the Twins their initial run in the first inning. The Brewers knotted the count in the ninth with singles by Tito Francona, Bob Burda and Ted Kubiak. When the Twins broke the game wide apart in the 11th, Killebrew climaxed the outburst by hitting for the circuit with two men on base.

Yankees 4, Orioles 2 at New York (night game):
Homers by Bobby Murcer and Roy White carried the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. Murcer led off the second inning with a round-tripper and another run scored in that same stanza on a single by Jim Lyttle, an error and a single by Jake Gibbs. White then provided the deciding blow, hitting for the circuit with a man on base in the third.

A's 6, White Sox 5 at Oakland (night game):
An infield hit by Tony LaRussa with the bases loaded in the ninth inning capped a two-run rally as the Athletics defeated the White Sox, 6-5. In the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Gail Hopkins delivered a two-run homer to put the White Sox ahead, 5-4. The A's quickly tied the score in their half when Rick Monday walked and Gene Tenace and Sal Bando singled. After a sacrifice by Don Mincher and intentional pass to Reggie Jackson, LaRussa beat out his dribbler into the hole past third baseman Rich Morales.

Indians 4, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Four hours after reporting from the minors, Mike Paul started for the Indians, pitched 8 1/3 innings and received credit for a 4-3 victory over the Senators. The Indians scored two unearned runs in the second inning and won the game when Vada Pinson tripled with two men on base in the eighth. The victory, with the help of Rick Austin, was Paul's first with the Indians this season. The young lefthander lost four games before being sent to Wichita (American Association) on July 16.

[DH] Dodgers 6, Braves 3 (night game) / Dodgers 3, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Homers by Jim Lefebvre and Willie Davis, each with a man on base, paced the Dodgers to 6-3 and 3-2 victories in a sweep of a twi-night doubleheader with the Braves, whose losing streak was extended to six games. Orlando Cepeda hit a solo swat in each contest for the Braves. The Dodgers took a 3-1 lead in the lidlifter on Lefebvre's round-tripper in the fourth inning and clinched the decision with two more runs in the fifth on a single by Bill Russell, triple by Davis and error by Cepeda. A pass to Wes Parker and singles by Lefebvre and Willie Crawford in the second inning started the Dodgers' scoring in the nightcap. Ted Sizemore doubled in the third and Davis followed with his circuit clout for the winning blow. Ray Lamb, pitching in relief of Claude Osteen in the opener, gained his fifth straight victory without a defeat.

Phillies 3, Cubs 2 at Chicago (day game):
A pinch-single by Terry Harmon with two out in the 13th inning scored Ron Stone from second base and gave the Phillies a 3-2 victory over the Cubs. Ron Santo homered with a man on base for the Cubs in the seventh inning and Don Money tied the score with a similar blow for the Phillies in the eighth. Stone singled in the 13th and advanced on a sacrifice by Johnny Briggs. After Larry Hisle flied out, Tom McCarver drew an intentional pass before Harmon batted for Woodie Fryman, who received credit for the victory by pitching two innings in relief in his first appearance since coming off the disabled list.

Giants 5, Reds 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Giants were able to extend their winning streak to five games when John Stephenson drove in two runs with a pinch-double in the eighth inning to beat the Reds, 5-3. The Giants took a 2-1 lead on a double by Jim Ray Hart in the fourth and added a run on a homer by Bobby Bonds in the seventh, but the Reds tied the score in their half of the seventh on a single by Pete Rose, double by Bobby Tolan and single by Tony Perez. In the eighth, a double by Tito Fuentes and an intentional pass to Bonds preceded Stephenson's two-out double to enable Gaylord Perry to post his 17th victory.

Padres 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
The Padres, who had lost 13 straight games in the Astrodome and 14 out of 15 since entering the league, snapped the park's jinx by defeating the Astros, 2-1, in 10 innings. Al Ferrara homered for the Padres in the sixth, but the Astros forced the game into overtime with a run in the ninth on a single by Joe Morgan and a double by Jim Wynn. Chris Cannizzaro doubled for the Padres in the 10th and gave way on the paths to Ron Slocum. Pat Dobson then helped himself to victory with a safe bunt, moving Slocum to third from where he scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Steve Huntz.

Pirates 8, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Sparked by Matty Alou, who hit his first homer since June 4, 1969, the Pirates beat the Expos, 8-4, to snap a six-game losing streak. Alou's blow with Bob Veale on base broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning. After two out, Al Oliver singled and Willie Stargell also hit for the circuit. Veale, who had been plagued by an ailing shoulder, made his first appearance since August 21. The lefthander gave up a run in the first, but did not yield a hit until Bob Bailey homered in the seventh. The Expos went on to add two more runs, bringing John Lamb to the relief of Veale.

Mets 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Wayne Garrett had the second four-hit game of his major league career and scored the winning run in the 12th inning as the Mets defeated the Cardinals, 4-3. After a homer by Leron Lee and another run on singles by Joe Hague, Joe Torre and Ted Simmons gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead, the Mets tied the score in the ninth when Cleon Jones doubled and Donn Clendenon singled. A single by Jerry Grote, pass to Joe Foy and single by Ed Kranepool for his first hit in 22 appearances as a pinch-hitter, sent the Mets ahead in the 11th, but the Cardinals pulled even in their half with singles by Jim Beauchamp, Torre and Simmons. Garrett singled in the 12th, stole second, continued to third when Milt Ramirez failed to hold the throw by Simmons and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jones. Ron Herbel, who had just reported from the Padres, was the winner in relief.
