Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 5, Tigers 2 at Boston (night game):
Two-run homers by Reggie Smith and Rico Petrocelli carried the Red Sox to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers. Mike Andrews singled ahead of Smith's sock in the first inning. Smith singled in the third and scored on a double by Carl Yastrzemski before Petrocelli poked his homer. Jim Price hit for the circuit with a man on base in the sixth to produce the Tigers' tallies.

Angels 1, Royals 0 at California (night game):
Tom Bradley turned in the first complete-game victory of his major league career, pitching the Angels past the Royals, 1-0. Bradley gave up seven hits. Loser Jim Rooker yielded only four, but the Angels scored in the second inning on singles by Alex Johnson and Tommie Reynolds and an infield out by Jim Spencer.

Brewers 8, Twins 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Roberto Pena and Phil Roof batted in three runs apiece to lead the Brewers to an 8-3 victory over Twins. In the fifth inning, when the Brewers scored five times, Pena knocked in one run with the single and Roof followed with a three-run homer. Pena homered with a man on base in the seventh.

Orioles 8, Yankees 4 at New York (night game):
Jim Palmer gained his 19th victory when the Orioles piled up six runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Yankees, 8-4. A double by Elrod Hendricks, infield hit by Mark Belanger and error by Horace Clarke on a grounder by Palmer netted the first tally. After a safe bunt by Don Buford, Paul Blair hit a sacrifice fly. An intentional pass to Boog Powell reloaded the sacks. Frank Robinson and Brooks Robinson walked, each forcing in a run. Clarke then threw wildly on a grounder by Davey Johnson and both Powell and Frank Robinson crossed the plate.

A's 4, White Sox 3 at Oakland (night game):
With two out in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Frank Fernandez came through with a three-run homer to bring the Athletics a 4-3 victory over the White Sox. Bob Spence gave the White Sox their first two runs with a circuit clout in second. Gene Tenace homered for the A's in the seventh, but the White Sox added a run in the ninth on doubles by Carlos May and Bill Melton. In the A's ninth, with one out, Sal Bando singled and, after Tenace flied out, pinch-hitter Dave Duncan also singled before Fernandez delivered his dramatic homer.

Indians 4, Senators 2 at Washington (night game):
Duke Sims, Jack Heidemann and Graig Nettles hit homers to provide the Indians with a 4-2 victory over the Senators. Steve Hargan, with relief help from Rick Austin and Dennis Higgins, picked up his seventh straight victory since being recalled from the minors on July 16. Mike Epstein batted in the Senators' runs with a double.

Braves 11, Dodgers 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Although only 4,450 fans were on hand, the Braves went over the million mark in attendance for the fifth straight year and marked the occasion by defeating the Dodgers, 11-4. Hank Aaron homered with two men on base in the third inning and Orlando Cepeda and Clete Boyer each connected with one aboard in the fifth. Aaron scored the 1,798th run of his career in the eighth, tying him with Ted Williams for ninth place on the all-time list. Bill Sudakis and Andy Kosco hit homers for the Dodgers.

Cubs 7, Phillies 2 at Chicago (day game):
Jim Hickman batted in four runs and Fergie Jenkins pitched a four-hitter as the Cubs defeated the Phillies. 7-2, but a familiar name was missing from the Chicago lineup. Billy Williams was benched, ending his string of appearances in 1,117 consecutive games. Singles by Glenn Beckert, Joe Pepitone and Hickman started the Cubs' scoring in first the inning. Don Kessinger doubled in the third and counted on a single by Beckert. Pepitone bunted and was safe along with Beckert on a late throw on a fielder's choice. Hickman then smashed a homer. Pepitone batted in the Cubs' last two tallies with a triple in the fourth. Larry Hisle and Tim McCarver hit back-to-back homers in the fifth to account for the Phillies' runs.

Reds 7, Giants 3 at Cincinnati (night game):
The batting of Pete Rose and Johnny Bench led the Reds to a 7-3 victory over the Giants. Rose drove in three runs with a homer, double and grounder, while Bench accounted for two with a double.

Padres 4, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Clay Kirby, who allowed only three hits, pitched the Padres to a 4-0 victory over the Astros and posted his first major league shutout. Chris Cannizzaro, Kirby's batterymate, drove in three runs with a double in the second inning after Ollie Brown and Nate Colbert singled and Ed Spiezio was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Al Ferrara walked in the seventh and pinch-runner Ivan Murrell counted the final tally on a wild pitch and a single by Brown.

Cardinals 5, Mets 3 at St. Louis (day game):
The Cardinals salvaged the finale of the four-game series with the Mets by beating Gary Gentry, 5-3, for their first victory over the sophomore rlghthander in six decisions going back to last season. Gentry gave up three runs, including Joe Hague's third-inning homer. After Gentry left the game for a pinch-hitter, Rich Folkers gave up the Cardinals' remaining two tallies and these proved decisive when Al Weis hit his first homer since the 1969 World Series, connecting with a man on base in the ninth inning.
