Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 8, Red Sox 6 at Boston (night game):
Brooks Robinson collected five hits, including two homers, to lead the Orioles to an 8-6 victory in a slugfest with the Red Sox, who lost despite a grand slam by Tony Conigliaro. Don Buford homered for the Orioles in the first inning, but singles by Mike Andrews, Regge Smith and Carl Yastrzemski loaded the bases in the Red Sox half and Conigliaro followed with his wallop off Mike Cuellar for his second grand slam in four days.
The Orioles scored three runs in the second and went ahead with Brooks Robinson's first homer of the game in fourth, but George Scott tied the count with a circuit clout in the fifth. Robinson hit his second homer after singles by Frank Robinson and Paul Blair in the seventh. A solo swat by Scott for the Red Sox in the eighth proved a meaningless blow.

Twins 4, Angels 0 at California (night game):
Brant Alyea smashed a three-run homer in the first inning to start the Twins off to a 4-0 victory over the Angels behind the combined four-hit hurling of Bert Blyleven and Ron Perranoski. After the Twins' first two batters struck out, Harmon Killebrew walked, Tony Oliva singled and Alyea belted his homer off Rudy May. Perranoski replaced Blyleven with the bases loaded and one out in the sixth and quelled the Angels' threat.

Brewers 3, White Sox 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Floyd Wicker, playing in his first game with the Brewers since coming up from Portland (Pacific Coast), drove in a run with a single in the 10th inning to beat the White Sox, 3-2. The Brewers opened the scoring with two runs in the fifth with a double by Phil Roof, singles by Ted Kubiak and Tommy Harper and a sacrifice fly by Russ Snyder. The White Sox pulled even with an unearned pair off Skip Lockwood. Ken Sanders was the winner in relief when Wicker's single plated Harper with one out in the overtime stanza.

Yankees 3, Indians 2 at New York (night game):
Jake Gibbs, who broke one tie with a homer, snapped another with a run-scoring single to enable the Yankees to defeat the Indians, 3-2. The Indians counted in the first inning on singles by Ted Uhlaender and Chuck Hinton, around an infield out, and the Yankees came back with a run in the second on a walk, a single by Danny Cater and a grounder by Frank Baker. After Gibbs hit his homer in the third, the Indians pulled even in the fifth on a single by Graig Nettles, an infield out and a single by Duke Sims. Jerry Kenney singled for the Yankees in the seventh and moved to third on a sacrifice and a long fly before scoring the winning run on Gibbs' single.

A's 5, Royals 0 at Oakland (night game):
After seven unsuccessful attempts, Catfish Hunter gained his 16th victory and first since July 30 when the Athletics defeated the Royals, 5-0. The shutout was the first of the season for Hunter and the complete game was his first since June 12. Don Mincher hit a two-run homer and Gene Tenace added a bases-empty blast in the A's attack.

Tigers 6, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
The Tigers rallied for four runs in the ninth inning, including a tie-breaking double by Elliott Maddox, to defeat the Senators, 6-3. Frank Howard batted in two runs with a double in the seventh and added an RBI with a single in the eighth to put the Senators ahead, 3-2. In the Tigers' ninth, after the tying run scored on an error by Aurelio Rodriguez, Maddox hit his double to plate Jim Northrup and Don Wert. Maddox then counted himself on a single by Ike Brown. All four runs were unearned.

Cubs 7, Mets 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs moved into a virtual tie with the Pirates for first place in the East division, trailing by only four-tenths of one percentage point, as the result of a 7-4 victory over the Mets, who fell 1½ games off the pace. The Cubs built up a 3-0 lead, but the Mets tied the score in the sixth when Wayne Garrett walked, Cleon Jones singled and Art Shamsky homered. Jim Hickman strolled for the Cubs in the seventh and Joe Pepitone singled. After a sacrifice by Ron Santo, Johnny Callison drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Randy Hundley promptly doubled, driving in two runs, and Paul Popovich followed with a sacrifice fly for another counter. The Mets picked up a run in the eighth, but Hickman matched it with a homer in the Cubs' half.

Padres 15, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Mike Corkins smashed a grand slam for his first major league homer and allowed only five hits in seven innings of pitching as the Padres pounded the Reds, 15-2. Corkins' clout in the fourth inning kayoed Jim Merritt, the Reds' 20-game winner. Cito Gaston and Nate Colbert also homered in the 18-hit attack. Jim Maloney, making his first appearance for the Reds since rupturing his Achilles tendon April 16 and pitching 1 1/3 innings of relief, was racked for five runs, two coming on Gaston's round-tripper. Corkins gave up the Reds' runs on a homer by Bobby Tolan in the fifth. Paul Doyle pitched the last two innings for the Padres and was credited with a cheap save.

Astros 7, Dodgers 3 at Houston (night game):
After breaking a tie with a run on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, the Astros scored three more times to beat the Dodgers, 7-3. The Dodgers counted one run on a single by Billy Grabarkewitz in the second inning and two on a homer by Tom Haller in the fourth. The Astros' first three runs of the game were unearned. With the score tied, Doug Rader and Cesar Cedeno singled for the Astros in the eighth, chasing Sandy Vance. Jim Brewer, in relief, threw one wild pitch to advance the runners and another to allow Rader to score. Cedeno crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Jesus Alou. A walk, a double by Joe Morgan and single by Jim Wynn added two tallies.

Pirates 4, Phillies 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A malfunction of the automatic tarpaulin during a shower in the seventh inning forced the suspension of the Pirates' game with the Phillies. The Pirates were leading, 4-1, when Don Money walked to lead off the seventh for the Phillies. When rain started to fall, umpires ordered the field covered, but the tarp, which operates electrically, stuck after rising about one foot out of the box alongside the third base line. The game was to be completed prior to the regular-scheduled meeting of the clubs on the following night. The Pirates had homers by Richie Hebner, Bob Robertson and Willie Stargell in building up their lead. Robertson, who went into the game when Roberto Clemente sprained a back muscle in the first inning, also doubled and scored on a single by Manny Sanguillen in the fourth. The Phillies' run off Steve Blass counted on a double by Tim McCarver and single by Rick Wise in the fifth.

Expos 9, Cardinals 7 at St. Louis (night game):
Claude Raymond pitched three hitless innings of relief and also contributed a sacrifice bunt in the 13th when the Expos scored two runs to defeat the Cardinals, 9-7. The Expos got off to a 3-0 lead, but homers by Leron Lee and Joe Hague helped the Cardinals forge in front, 5-4, before Bob Bailey walked and scored from first base on a hit-and-run single by Jim Gosger in the seventh. Tom Hilgendorf walked two batters with the bases loaded in the 10th to send the Expos ahead, but Ted Simmons singled in the Cards' half and Jose Cardenal tied the score with a pinch-homer. In the 13th, Coco Laboy singled and Raymond sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Boots Day, Bobby Wine beat out an infield hit to load the bases. Gary Sutherland then broke the tie with a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch allowed Day to cross the plate with an insurance run.
