Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 4, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Winning his own game with a homer, Ken Brett pitched the Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Indians. Circuit clouts accounted for all the scoring in the contest. Joe Lahoud connected for the Red Sox in the first inning, but a double by Ken Harrelson, pass to Roy Foster and homer by Buddy Bradford produced the Indians' runs in the second. The Red Sox tied the score in the fourth when Tony Conigliaro was hit by a pitch and Rico Petrocelli hit a homer. Brett broke the tie with his round-tripper in the eighth off Steve Hargan, whose 28th birthday was spoiled by the loss, the first for the righthander after winning seven straight games since being recalled from the minors on July 16.
Orioles 6, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Boog Powell hit a homer and a single, driving in three runs, and Frank Robinson added a homer to the Orioles' attack in a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Frank Robinson walked ahead of Powell's poke in the first inning. Paul Blair singled, stole second and scored the third run of the frame on a single by Brooks Robinson. Frank Robinson homered in the third. Powell singled in the fifth to plate Curt Motton, who was on base with a double.
Royals 12, Angels 0 at Kansas City (night game):
While Jim Rooker pitched a three-hitter, the Royals piled up 17 singles, including four apiece by Bob Oliver and Lou Piniella, to trounce the Angels, 12-0. In the second, the Royals set club records for most hits in one inning, 9, and most runs, 7. Rudy May, the Angels' starter, faced seven batters during that stanza and failed to retire any.
Brewers 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Phil Roof, who has feasted on Twins' pitching this season, batted the Brewers to a 3-2 victory by smashing a homer with a man on base and two out in the ninth inning. The Brewers' catcher had a .429 average against the Twins with five homers. Tony Oliva hit a homer in the eighth to put the Twins ahead, 2-1, but in the ninth Mike Hegan singled with one out. Ron Perranoski relieved Bert Blyleven and fanned Bernie Smith, but then fell victim to Roof's rap.
Yankees 7, Senators 3 at Washington (night game):
Led by Roy White, who batted in three runs with a pair of triples and scored twice, the Yankees extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-3 victory over the Senators. Danny Cater drove White across the plate after each of his three-baggers. Ed Stroud homered with a man on base for the Senators.
Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Orlando Cepeda clouted a three-run homer in the first inning, enabling George Stone to pitch the Braves to a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. Felix Millan doubled and Hank Aaron walked ahead of Cepeda's smash. The Dodgers scored in the fifth on doubles by Ted Sizemore and Maury Wills and added their other run in the seventh when Billy Grabarkewitz hit for the circuit.
Mets 10, Expos 5 at New York (day game):
The Mets erupted for six runs in the eighth inning and defeated the Expos, 10-5, to pull within one-half game of the Pirates in the tight East division race. The leaders lost to the Cubs. The Mets jumped off to a 4-0 lead before the Expos rallied for two runs in the fourth. Gary Gentry was hit on the hand by a batted ball and was forced to leave the mound. Tug McGraw took over and helped gain the victory by batting in three runs in the eighth. Wayne Garrett started the stanza with a single, Cleon Jones doubled and, after an intentional pass to Art Shamsky, Ken Boswell cleared the sacks with a double. Passes to Jerry Grote and Bud Harrelson reloaded the bases. McGraw then hit safely to right field and tripped over first base, forcing him to stop with a single, but all three runners scored. Ron Herbel replaced McGraw in the ninth after Bob Bailey hit a three-run homer for the Expos.
Cardinals 6, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Carlton, who belatedly appeared to be regaining his 1969 form, when he won 17 games for the Cardinals, pitched a four-hitter and beat the the Phillies, 6-3, for his second straight victory and ninth of the season against 18 defeats. Carlton fell behind in the first inning when Denny Doyle walked and Deron Johnson homered, but the Cardinals tied the score in the second and went ahead in the seventh when Carlton and Lou Brock doubled. Dick Allen, back in the lineup for the first time since August 14, homered in the eighth. Carlton singled and drove in one of the Cardinals' last pair in the ninth. Joe Lis homered in the Phillies' half.
Cubs 10, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
The Cubs backed Bill Hands' pitching with a 15-hit attack and defeated the Pirates, 10-3. The setback trimmed the Pirates' East division lead to one-half game over the Mets and one game over the Cubs. The Cubs bunched five singles for two runs in the second inning and added two more in the third on a homer by Billy Williams and singles by Jim Hickman and Ron Santo around a passed ball and an infield out. Randy Hundley batted in a run with a single in the seventh and the Cubs then iced the verdict with five runs in the eighth, featuring a triple by Joe Pepitone with two men on base.
Astros 8, Padres 7 at San Diego (night game):
Doug Rader and Bob Watson batted in five runs between them to help the Astros outlast the Padres, 8-7, for their 14th victory in 18 games between the clubs this season. Rader hit a homer and a single for three RBIs, while Watson accounted for two with a pair of singles. Nate Colbert and Cito Gaston each homered with a man on base for the Padres.
Reds 5, Giants 2 at San Francisco (night game):
The relief pitching of Ray Washburn, who took over as an emergency replacement for Jim Merritt in the first inning, captured the spotlight as the Reds defeated the Giants, 5-2. The Giants scored in the first inning on a single by Ken Henderson, pass to Willie McCovey and single by Dick Dietz before Merritt left the mound with a strained elbow. Washburn gave up a run in the third on a double by Dietz and single by Al Gallagher, but otherwise checked the Giants until walking two men in the eighth. Wayne Granger took over and recorded his 32nd save. Bobby Tolan provided the decisive blow for the Reds, driving in three runs with a double in the second inning after Tony Perez and Lee May singled and Dave Concepcion walked to load the bases.
