With the help of catcher Andy Etchebarren, who hit the deciding homer, Dave McNally pitched the Orioles past the Yankees, 2-1, for his 22nd victory. Brooks Robinson doubled and Chico Salmon singled for the Orioles' initial run in the second inning. Etchebarren added his homer in the fifth before the Yankees picked up their run in the seventh on a single by John Ellis and double by Ron Hansen.

Indians 13, Senators 4 at Cleveland (night game):
A seventeen-hit attack that included homers by Roy Foster, Ted Uhlaender, Vada Pinson and John Lowenstein powered the Indians to a 13-4 victory over the Senators. Uhlaender hit his homer with a man on base and drove in two more runs with a single. Lowenstein's homer, after a pass to Duke Sims in the sixth inning, was the first in the major leagues for the rookie infielder. Sims batted in three runs with a double in the seventh. Frank Howard hit his 41st and 42nd homers for the Senators, driving in three runs, to bring his RBI total to a career high of 121.

Red Sox 14, Tigers 0 at Detroit (night game):
Mike Andrews batted in five runs and Carl Yastrzemski drove in four, each hitting a homer with two men on base, to lead the Red Sox to a 14-0 victory over the Tigers. Ray Culp walked seven, but yielded only three hits in blanking the Bengals.

[DH] Royals 2, Brewers 0 (night game) / Royals 10, Brewers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Getting tight pitching in both games, the Royals beat the Brewers in a twi-night doubleheader, 2-0 and 10-2. A single by Paul Schaal in the fourth inning drove in the Royals' runs in the opener. Bill Butler, making his first start since returning from Omaha (American Association), limited the Brewers to three hits before being removed after issuing two passes with one out in the ninth. Ted Abernathy struck out Floyd Wicker, gave up a bases-loading single by Bob Burda and got Tito Francona on a fly to save the game. In the nightcap, Dick Drago pitched a five-hitter for the Royals, with one of the Brewers' runs coming on a homer by Burda. The Royals enjoyed a pair of five-run outbursts. In the sixth inning, after Rich Severson drove in two runs with a single, Lou Piniella came up with the sacks filled and cleared them with a double. Schaal doubled for two runs when the Royals added their remaining five tallies in the seventh.

[DH] Twins 6, A's 1 (night game) / Twins 7, A's 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A four-run outburst in each game helped the Twins sweep a twi-night doubleheader with the Athletics, 6-1 and 7-2. In the opener, Cesar Tovar led off with a single in the third inning and, after a sacrifice, scored the Twins' first run on a double by Tony Oliva. Harmon Killebrew walked and was forced by Rich Reese. Brant Alyea singled to plate Oliva. George Mitterwald walked to load the bases and Charlie Manuel, batting for Frank Quilici, singled to drive in two runs. Oliva homered in the first inning of the nightcap and Jim Kaat batted in a run with a single in the second before the Twins clinched their sweep with four runs in the fifth on three walks, a wild pitch and singles by Alyea, Paul Ratliff and Qullici.

Cubs 9, Expos 3 at Chicago (day game):
Sparked by Ernie Banks, who broke a 2-2 tie with a three-run homer in the fourth inning, the Cubs defeated the Expos, 9-3. Jim Hickman walked and Ron Santo singled before Banks, after failing in two bunt attempts, swung away and smashed his homer. The Cubs' veteran star also batted in another run with a single in the seventh. Rusty Staub homered for the Expos.

Bench also homered for the Reds in the eighth inning. Tom Haller hit a round-tripper with one aboard for the Dodgers.
