Today's scores and summaries:
Dodgers 12, Padres 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
A five-run outburst in the first inning started the Dodgers off to a 12-4 victory over the Padres, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. Maury Wills and Manny Mota opened with singles and Willie Davis doubled, Wills scoring. Mota also crossed the plate when Ollie Brown bobbled the ball on Davis' drive. Bill Sudakis sent Davis home with a single. Ted Sizemore and Bill Russell singled to plate Sudakis. Sizemore counted on a sacrifice fly by Billy Grabarhewitz. The Dodgers' remaining scoring included three RBIs by Wes Parker. Ivan Murrell homered with two men on base for the Padres in the ninth inning.
Mets 9, Expos 5 at Montreal (night game):
The Mets scored four unearned runs in the 10th inning and beat the Expos, 9-5, to move into a virtual tie with the idle Pirates for first place in the East division. The Pirates were ahead by four-tenths of one percentage point, .5310 to .5306. The Expos took the lead in the second inning when Clyde Mashore homered with a man on base for his first major league hit. A single by Mashore sparked the scoring of two more runs in the fourth. The Mets exploded for five runs in the fifth on three walks, three hits and a sacrifice fly, but the Expos tied the score in their half with a walk, a double by Mack Jones and a sacrifice fly by Bobby Wine. In the tenth, Jerry Grote singled and gave way to Rod Gaspar, who stole second. Bud Harrelson was safe on an error by Ron Fairly. Gaspar was trapped between third and home on a grounder by Tommie Agee, but scored when John Bateman threw wildly in the rundown. A double by Wayne Garrett, sacrifice fly by Ron Swoboda and single by Donn Clendenon added three runs to nail down the victory.
Giants 7, Braves 5 at San Francisco (night game):
Frank Johnson, playing in place of the ailing Willie McCovey, drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning when the Giants scored four times to outlast the Braves, 7-5. With the game tied, 3-3, Hal Lanier, Frank Reberger and Bobby Bonds hit singles to load the bases. Willie Mays walked, forcing in the tie-breaking tally. Johnson then rapped his single for two runs and another scored on a wild pitch.
