Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 4, Tigers 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Vada Pinson and Duke Sims each hit a two-run homer and Steve Mingori, pitching in relief, gained his first major league victory when the Indians defeated the Tigers, 4-3. Dick McAuliffe homered for the Tigers in the first inning and Norm Cash drove in a run with a single in the third, but the Indians tied the score in the sixth when Eddie Leon singled and Pinson hit for the circuit. After the Tigers went ahead again with a run-scoring single by Al Kaline in the seventh, Buddy Bradford singled in the Indians' half and Sims smashed his homer to determine the outcome.

[DH] Brewers 1, A's 0 (night game) / A's 6, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Athletics were held to two hits by Skip Lockwood and lost the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 1-0, but came back with two homers by Bert Campaneris to beat the Brewers in the second game, 6-5. Lockwood gained his decision over Blue Moon Odom in the opener when the Brewers scored in the fifth inning on a single by Ted Kubiak, sacrifice by Lockwood, infield hit by Tommy Harper and single by Dave May. In the nightcap, Campaneris hit a solo swat in the third inning and the A's went on to take a 4-1 lead. The Brewers picked up two runs in the sixth and forged ahead in the eighth when Ted Savage homered with a man on base. Savage also had two triples. In the ninth, Dave Duncan drew a walk and Campaneris hit his second homer of the game to give the A's their split.

[DH] Twins 7, Angels 5 (day game) / Angels 5, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
After winning the day game, 7-5, with the aid of a grand-slam homer by Leo Cardenas, the Twins were forced to settle for a split when the Angels erupted for five runs in the ninth inning to take the night game, 5-3. The day game was scheduled because of the previous night's postponement and only 699 fans turned out in 55-degree weather. The night contest drew 8,383. Cardenas' grand slam in the second inning of the day game followed three walks issued by Tom Bradley. However, the Angels came back to tie the score before the Twins posted their winning runs on a bases-loaded single by Jim Holt in the sixth. With Rich Reese hitting a homer and a triple, the Twins held a 3-0 lead in the night game going into the ninth inning when the Angels started their rally with a single by Jarvis Tatum and a pass to Sandy Alomar. Ron Perranoski replaced Tom Hall and was tagged for three singles that produced the tying runs. Stan Williams, who was the winner in relief in the afternoon game, then took over, but Tony Gonzalez doubled to drive in the winning pair for the Angels.

[DH] Yankees 8, Red Sox 6 (night game) / Yankees 3, Red Sox 2 at New York (night game):
Taking advantage of errors, the Yankees swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Red Sox, 8-6 and 3-2, with four runs in the first game and one in the second game being unearned. The Red Sox committed five errors in the lidlifter, including two wild throws by rookie catcher Bob Montgomery. In the nightcap, the Red Sox held a 2-0 lead until the ninth inning when Jim Lyttle singled. Frank Baker hit to Mike Andrews, who threw wildly, Lyttle going to third and Baker reaching second. Pete Ward then struck out, but Curt Blefary batted for Steve Kline and smashed a homer to win the game for the Yankees.

Orioles 6, Senators 2 at Washington (night game):
The Orioles piled up five runs in the third inning and Dave McNally took it from there to post his 23rd victory, beating the Senators, 6-2. Singles by Davey Johnson and Andy Etchebarren, a sacrifice by McNally and sacrifice fly by Don Buford accounted for the Orioles' initial tally. When Ed Brinkman threw wildly on a grounder by Mark Belanger, Etchebarren scored. Boog Powell doubled, knocking in two more runs, and then crossed the plate himself on singles by Merv Rettenmund and Brooks Robinson. Powell added a homer in the seventh.

Cubs 5, Cardinals 3 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs remained one game behind the Pirates in the hot East division race by defeating the Cardinals, 5-3. The Mets, who lost to the Expos, fell into a tie with the Cubs for second. The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead against Ken Holtzman in the fourth inning when Joe Torre singled and Jose Cardenal homered, but the Cubs pulled even in the fifth on a pass to Ron Santo and round-tripper by Randy Hundley. Glenn Beckert doubled in the sixth and scored on a single by Billy Williams to send the Cubs ahead. Singles by Holtzman, Beckert and Williams added a run in the seventh and Santo increased the Cubs' lead with a homer in the eighth. The Cardinals chased Holtzman in the ninth when Torre doubled and Cardenal singled, but Phil Regan relieved and saved the game at the expense of only one run on a grounder by Luis Melendez.

Astros 9, Reds 2 at Houston (night game):
The Astros scored four runs in the fourth inning, added four more in the fifth and beat the Reds, 9-2, behind the four-hit pitching of Larry Dierker. In the fourth, Jim Wynn was safe on an error, Bob Watson walked and Denis Menke singled to produce the first run before Doug Rader hit a homer for three more. The scoring in the fifth featured singles by Jesus Alou, Joe Morgan and Wynn and doubles by Bob Watson and Cesar Cedeno.

Dodgers 5, Padres 4 at Los Angeles (night game):
Manny Mota capped a two-run rally in the ninth inning with a single that gave the Dodgers a 5-4 victory over the Padres. Dave Campbell and Nate Colbert hit homers for the Padres, who held a 4-3 lead going into the Dodgers' final frame. Billy Grabarkewitz doubled to open the rally and scored on a pinch-double by Len Gabrielson. Tom Paciorek ran for Gabrielson. An error and an intentional pass then loaded the bases before Mota singled to drive in Paciorek with the winning run.

Expos 5, Mets 4 at Montreal (night game):
The Mets, who were in a virtual tie with the Pirates for first place in the East division, lost to the Expos, 5-4, in 10 innings, and fell one game off the pace into a tie with the Cubs for second place. The Expos started the scoring with two runs in the second on a homer by Bob Bailey, single by John Bateman and triple by Bobby Wine. After the Mets tied the score, Wine hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the seventh to send the Expos in front again. However, Dave Marshall homered for the Mets in the ninth and Agee broke the tie with a circuit clout in the 10th. In the Expos' half, Wine singled, Ron Brand walked and, after a sacrifice, pinch-runner Boots Day counted on a wild pitch by Jerry Koosman. Gary Sutherland grounded out, but Rusty Staub walked and stole second. With a count of three balls on Ron Fairly, Ron Herbel replaced Koosman and finished walking Fairly intentionally. Herbel then made his first pitch to Bateman, who lashed it for the game-winning single.

Pirates 8, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Pirates used homers by Willie Stargell, Richie Hebner and Bill Mazeroski to defeat the Phillies, 8-3, and take a one-game lead in the East division race over the Mets and Cubs. Stargell hit his homer in the first inning after a pass to Freddie Patek and a safe bunt by Matty Alou. After a single by Johnny Briggs with the bases loaded in the second gave the Phillies two runs, the Pirates pulled away when Hebner and Mazeroski hit successive homers in the fourth. The division leaders then iced the decision with three runs in the eighth on two walks, a single by Alou, a wild throw and a single by Al Oliver.

Giants 8, Braves 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Posting his third consecutive shutout, Gaylord Perry pitched the Giants to an 8-0 victory over the Braves. Perry batted in the only run that he needed with a single in the second inning and then scored himself when Bobby Bonds hit a homer. Al Gallagher added a round-tripper in the fourth before the Giants iced the decision with their final four tallies in the eighth.
